Screening Sonography of the Ankle/Foot to Correlate Pain and Pathology
In conclusion, sonography of the foot/ankle combined with self-reported data could aid in the holistic evaluation of ankle/foot pain. (Source: Journal of Diagnostic Medical Sonography)

Comparison of Current Echocardiographic Modalities Used to Assess Left Ventricle Diastolic Function in Pediatric Patients
Tissue Doppler imaging, left ventricular color M-mode velocity propagation, and deformation imaging techniques from the medical literature were critically reviewed. The review was undertaken to evaluate the accuracy, reproducibility, and clinical efficiency of echocardiographic technologies for image acquisition and data analysis in assessing pediatric diastolic function. Tissue Doppler imaging, velocity propagation, and deformation imaging all show low variability and high reproducibility and specificity. Age, growth, heart rate, morphology, and sonographic technique affect some pediatric echocardiographic indices more th...

Transrectal Elastographic Biopsy and Contrast-Enhanced Transrectal Biopsy May Offer Improvements Over the Current Transrectal Systemic Biopsy Technique
Prostate cancer is a common cause of cancer-related death of men in the United States. The purpose of this review is to compare the validity of transrectal ultrasound–guided systemic biopsy with contrast-enhanced transrectal ultrasound–guided systemic biopsy and transrectal elastography–guided systemic biopsy for the detection of prostate cancer. Adding contrast-enhanced or transrectal elastography core targeting to transrectal ultrasound–guided biopsy is a feasible approach to increase detection rates of higher-grade prostate cancers. Because contrast-enhanced imaging of the prostate is not approve...

Ultrasound Transducers
This article discusses the history and types of transducers and the elements that have changed over time. There has been a sharp transition from natural to human-made elements and from one to many in a single transducer. Ergonomics also now plays a role in transducer design and will continue to do so; the grip, weight, and size of transducers are in the forefront of design considerations. The evolution of transducers has changed not only how well we visualize anatomy and what anatomy we see but also how the patient’s care is managed. Different, new, and emerging technologies certainly will continue to be identified w...

Sonographic Detection of Metastatic Breast Cancer in the Liver
Sonography is an effective imaging modality for detecting the presence of breast cancer that has metastasized to other organs. Early determination of the presence of these metastatic lesions has proved essential in improving the survival of patients with this disease. This case study presents a patient who was diagnosed with breast cancer, treated, and considered cancer free 9 months prior to the sonogram presented. Within these 9 months, the breast cancer had metastasized to the liver, where it was initially detected on a right upper quadrant sonogram, evaluated further by computed tomography, and definitively diagnosed b...

Prenatal Diagnosis and Treatment of Fetal Goiter
A case study of a fetal goiter with successful in utero treatment is presented. The incidence of fetal goiters is rare and can have poor neonatal outcomes due to tracheal and esophageal obstruction. This makes prenatal diagnosis and treatment pertinent. In this case, a solid, homogenous, hypervascular mass is seen protruding from the anterior fetal neck causing hyperextension of the cervical spine. With the use of a percutaneous umbilical cord sampling (PUBS) procedure, the diagnosis of fetal hypothyroidism was established. Successful treatment of the fetal goiter and hypothyroidism with intra-amniotic injections of synthr...

Cystic Pulmonary Airway Malformation in Abidjan (Cote dIvoire): The Benefit of Medical Imaging in Prenatal Diagnosis
We report three cases of Craig’s disease diagnosed at ultrasound: one at 26 weeks of amenorrhea and two others at 30 weeks of amenorrhea. We discuss according to the literature the main ultrasound aspects and specify the place of other radiographic explorations during the monitoring of this condition. Ultrasound Accuracy of Liver Length Measurement With Cadaveric Specimens
The liver is one of the principal organs in the body and is involved in over 500 physiological functions related to metabolism, digestion, immunity, and storage of nutrients. Given that there are a number of approaches to measure liver length through diagnostic 2D sonography, this work was undertaken to determine the most accurate measurement of this organ. Cadaveric specimens (n = 21) were employed to assess measurements in the midclavicular line (MCL) and the midaxillary line (MAL). Each measurement was calculated in anteroposterior (AP) and craniocaudal (CC) planes. In addition, in situ measurements were obtained by acc...
