The value of high-frequency 20 MHz ultrasonography for preoperative measurement of malignant melanoma thickness
High-frequency ultrasonography has become an important diagnostic tool in dermatovenerology. It is used for assessment of the cutaneous layers in diverse benign and malignant skin lesions and diseases. Herein we present the practical value of preoperative measurement of cutaneous melanoma thickness, the explanation of the possible reasons for different sonographic and histologic Breslow thickness, and the practical importance of high-frequency 20 MHz ultrasonography in preoperative measurements of cutaneous melanoma thickness. Fifty patients (31 women aged 41.6 ±15.4 years, 19 males aged 54.5±11.4 year (mean ± Standard ...

Mycosis fungoides and vitamin D status: Analyses of serum 25-hidroxyvitamin D levels and single nucleotide polymorphisms in the vitamin D receptor gene
Various types of cancer, including melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer, are associated with vitamin D receptor (VDR) polymorphisms. However, few studies have addressed VDR polymorphisms in patients with mycosis fungoides (MF), and previous studies have reported conflicting results. Aim of this case-control study was to assess the correlation between VDR single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs)Cdx2,Fok1,Apa1,Bsm1, andTaq1 and MF. Venous blood samples were collected from 41 patients with MF and 59 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. VDR genotypes of both groups were analyzed. Serum vitamin D levels of patients with MF wer...

Evaluation of symptomatic patients with resistant discharge
The aim of this study was to detect the presence ofChlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria (N.) gonorrhoeae, Mycoplasma (M.) hominis, M. genitalium, Ureaplasma (U.) urealyticum, andTrichomonas (T.) vaginalis in patients with resistant discharge. The study also evaluated the concordance of the diagnostic tests. Samples from 156 patients were tested by direct microscopy and culture forT. vaginalis and Mycoplasma IES forM. hominis andU. urealyticum.Multiplex Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) was used to determine the presence of six agents. Statistical analyses were performed using the SPSS program. Out of 156 patients, 38 had positiv...

Completeness of data on malignant melanoma skin sites and morphology in Croatian National Cancer Registry 2000-2014: an overview of recent progress
Mortality rates and five-year relative survival for malignant melanomaMM of the skin in Croatia are poor compared with most Europeancountries. Epidemiological data recorded at the National Cancer Registry(CNCR) are used for informing various decision-makers and researchers, aswell as comparisons with other countries. We analyzed CNCR data on MMskin sites and morphology for 2000-2007 and 2008-2014 and comparedthem with European 2000-2007 data. We further stratified skin site analysesin Croatia by sex, different age groups, and sources of reports. We found 52%of case with “non-specified sites” in Croatia in 2000-2007; ho...

Melanomas in renal transplant recipients: a single-centre study
Skin cancers are the most common malignancies in renal transplantrecipients, with squamous-cell and basal-cell cancers accounting for the majorityof all skin cancer cases. Melanoma is relatively rare in this group of patients. From 1973 to May 2017, out of 1889 patients who received allografts at our institution,4 developed melanoma. After the mean follow-up of 11.5 months, 2patients died and 2 are still alive with functioning allografts. Malignancies werelocalized in the legs in both female patients, and in the neck and head in 1 malepatient each. Compared to the general population of Croatia, renal transplantrecipients fr...
