Baclofen-induced dyshidrosiform bullous pemphigoid in a paraplegic patient complicated with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (mrsa) and urinary infection
Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is an autoimmune disorder which is usually chronic, with blistering that predominantly affects the skin and occasionally the mucosa, and which includes several different types. One of them is a very rare dyshidrosiform type which is localized on the hands and feet with small or large blisters on the palmoplantar surfaces. BP resulting from a drug reaction is a relatively rare occurrence, and so far more than 50 different medications have been identified as triggers. The aim of this article was to present the case of a paraplegic patient who developed this rare dyshidrosiform type of BP while he was ...

Eruptive nevi on the palms and soles with no association with an underlying disease or medications
Eruptive melanocytic nevi are an unusual phenomenon characterized by sudden onset of multiple melanocytic nevi on previously unaffected skin. The majority of case reports have linked this condition with blistering skin disease or immunosuppression. There are only three reports of eruptive nevi developing on the palms and /or soles in healthy individuals. Herein we present the clinical and dermoscopic features of two cases of   eruptive acral nevi that developed in healthy individuals in the absence of any recognizable underlying disease and review the current literature of eruptive nevi.  (Source: Acta Dermatovenerologica Croatica)

The role of skin barrier in periorificial dermatitis
Periorificial dermatitis, mostly known as perioral dermatitis, is a benign inflammatory facial dermatosis which can be a severe burden and even disfiguring and psychologically disturbing. The disease still presents a challenge for physicians when it comes to etiology and appropriate therapy. Although a variety of extrinsic and intrinsic factors have been proposed as etiopathogenetic factors, none of these fully explain complex pathogenesis of the disease. There is more evidence that supports beliefs that the epidermal barrier dysfunction is an underlying main pathogenic factor that contributes to persistent cutaneous infla...

Melanoma development: Current knowledge on melanoma pathogenesis
The pathogenic features of melanomas include growth and amplification of atypical melanocytes associated with several features (self-sufficiency of growth factors, insensitivity to growth inhibitors, evasion of cellular apoptosis, limitless replicative potential, sustained angiogenesis, tissue invasion, and metastasis). These melanoma pathogenic events can be triggered by activating oncogenes or inactivating tumor-suppressor genes by means of molecular mechanisms such as dotted mutations, deletions, and translocations or epigenetic mechanisms such as microRNA expression and promoter methylation. In melanomas, an analysis o...

The role of CD8+ T-cells and their cytokines in the pathogenesis of psoriasis
The important role of CD8+ T-cells in the pathogenesis of psoriasis is well-determined. However, besides type 1 cytokines that were formerly known, it was recently found that these cells secrete type 17 and type 22 cytokines. The majority of IL-17A+CD8+ T-cells in the blood belong to a subset of innate T-cells named mucosa-associated invariant T-cells (MAIT). However, the majority of IL-17A+CD8+ T-cells in psoriatic epidermis are conventional T-cells and are up-regulated in psoriasis. In contrast to Th17 cells that secrete only IL-17, Tc17 cells secrete IFN- ϒ, TNF-α, CCL20, IL-22, and granzyme B as well. The key cytokin...

Mycosis fungoides: A ten-year Turkish experience
Mycosis fungoides is the most common primary cutaneous T cell lymphoma, characterized by erythematous patches and plaque lesions with slow progression to cutaneous tumors or extracutaneous involvements in some patients. We aimed to evaluate the clinical characteristics, treatment responses, disease courses, and mortality rates of our MF cases. The data of 100 patients with MF were retrospectively examined from medical records in our clinic between January 2005 and January 2015. Demographic and clinical characteristics of the patients, disease stage, treatment protocols, response to treatment, recurrence, progression, and m...

Dermoscopic differentiation of facial lentigo maligna from pigmented actinic keratosis and solar lentigines
The differential diagnosis of lentigo maligna (LM) from pigmented actinic keratosis (PAK) and solar lentigines (SL) remains a challenge for clinicians, especially in the early stages of LM when there are no distinctive dermoscopic features. Objective of this study was to evaluate the frequencies of selective dermoscopic criteria in LM, PAK, and SL and to find the specific combination of distinguishing dermoscopic criteria for LM. Dermoscopists blinded to histopathological diagnosis evaluated 42 LM, 107 PAK, and 16 SL for the presence of predefined dermoscopic criteria. The differences in the presence of dermoscopic criteri...
