Sonographic Detection of Subcutaneous Foreign Bodies in 3 Cases
Subcutaneous masses caused by foreign bodies are frequently encountered in daily practice. Although the majority of foreign bodies such as metals can be detected by radiography, substances such as vegetative materials or wood are difficult to detect. To our knowledge, only a few studies have described the sonographic characteristics of foreign bodies. Herein, we report 3 cases where we studied the sonographic characteristics of the foreign bodies in the dermis and subcutaneous tissue. Our results revealed the following 3 foreign bodies:(1)glass, (2) vegetative material, and (3) a pencil core. Thus, sonographic examination ...

A Giant Basal Cell Carcinoma Misdiagnosed and Mistreated as Chronic Venous Ulcer
We present a case of a 58-year-old woman with an unrecognized and inadequately treated ulcerated giant BCC sized 12.5 × 10.0 cm that occurred on her left lower leg without any sign of metastasis. Neglect and inadequate treatment of the primary lesion are the most important contributing factors responsible for size in giant BCC.   (Source: Acta Dermatovenerologica Croatica)

Dermoscopic Findings in Patients with Pigmented Purpuric Dermatoses
Pigmented purpuric dermatoses (PPD) are a group of chronic and relapsing cutaneous disorders characterized by a distinct purpuric rash. The diagnosis is made with clinical and histopathological findings. Dermoscopy has rarely been used in the diagnosis of PPD. The aim of our study is to describe the dermoscopic findings in patients with PPD.Eighteen patients who were clinically and histopathologically diagnosed with PPD were studied prospectively. The type and duration of PPD, associated diseases, and medication history of the patients were noted. Dermoscopic examination was performed in all of the patients.Four of the pat...

Seroprevalence of Syphilis among Pregnant Women in the Varna Region (Bulgaria)
We present a retrospective cross-sectional analysis of 2702 pregnant women tested for syphilis seropositivity. During the study period (2009-2013) non-specific and specific treponemal antibodies were detected in 15 pregnant women (0.56% of sample size with 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.28-0.84). Our results showed a lack of correlation between syphilis seropositivity and age, ethnic origin, or pregnancy trimester of the mother. The only factor found to influence syphilis seropositivity was the mother ’s place of residence – rural inhabitants had significantly higher risk for syphilis infection when compared to urban i...

Is there a Link between Human Herpes Virus Infection and Toll-like Receptors in the Pathogenesis of Pityriasis Rosea? A Case-control Study
Human herpesvirus (HHV) 6 and 7 are involved in the pathogenesis of pityriasis rosea (PR). Our aim was to evaluate the role of the innate immune response in PR through the detection of Toll-like receptors (TLR) 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, and 9 expression in the skin of affected patients and to detect the possibility of being induced by HHV-6 and/or HHV-7 viral coexistence in these patients. Twenty-four patients with PR and 24 healthy controls were included in this case-control study. Biopsy was obtained from the PR lesion and from the healthy skin of controls for detection of HHV-6 and 7 as well as TLRs 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, and 9 gene expre...

Distribution of Malassezia species in Patients with Different Dermatological Disorders and Healthy Individuals
There are differences with respect to the commonly isolated Malassezia species, not only between healthy individuals and the patients with various skin diseases, but also between different countries. We investigated the species composition ofMalasseziamicroflora on the skin of patients withMalassezia-associated diseases and of healthy subjects (HS). Two hundred and fifty skin scrapings from patients with pityriasis versicolor (PV), seborrheic dermatitis (SD), atopic dermatitis (AD), psoriasis (PS), and healthy subjects (HS), fifty each, were inoculated into Sabouraud dextrose agar and into modified Dixon agar and identifie...

Serum Cytokine Profiles in Infants with Atopic Dermatitis
Atopic dermatitis (AD) in infancy is believed to have distinct features as compared to AD in other age groups, and little is known about cytokine production in infants with AD. We aimed to measure the serum cytokine levels of infants with atopic dermatitis and evaluate the association of new anti-inflammatory cytokines with the disease. Eighty-one infant patients with AD and 52 healthy controls were involved in this study. The serum levels of major pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines of the T-helper (Th) subtypes, as well as more recently defined interleukins (IL-27, IL-35, and IL-37), were measured using the ELISA method...

Assessment of Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Patients with Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder associated with increased cardiovascular risk. Aim of this work was to evaluate the association between psoriasis and chosen cardiovascular risk factors, echocardiographic parameters, and carotid intima-media thickness.A total of 50 patients with psoriasis and 50 controls were enrolled in the study. Psoriasis area severity index was calculated in the study group. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure, body mass index, waist circumference, lipids, fasting glucose, and D-dimer levels were assessed in all patients. In addition, echochardiographic parameters and carotid intima-...

Under the Surface of Subcutaneous Adipose Tissue Biology
The global obesity epidemic enhanced contemporary interest in adipose tissue biology. Two structurally and functionally distinct depots, subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) and visceral adipose tissue (VAT), are spread throughout the body. Their distribution was recognized to be a major determinant of metabolic risk. Unlike VAT, SAT showed some protective endocrine and inflammatory features that might explain the occurrence of obese but metabolically healthy persons. The unique developmental gene expression signature, angiogenesis, and adipogenic potential of SAT determines its growth ability under the positive energy balanc...

The role of androgens and estrogens in Hidradenitis Suppurativa – a Systematic Review
Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is an inflammatory skin disease. Several observations imply that sex hormones may play a role in its pathogenesis. HS is more common in women, and the disease severity appears to vary in intensity according to the menstrual cycle. In addition, parallels have been drawn between HS and acne vulgaris, suggesting that sex hormones may play a role in the condition. The role of androgens and estrogens in HS has therefore been explored in numerous observational and some interventional studies; however, the studies have often reported conflicting results. This systematic review includes 59 unique arti...
