Potential Cardio-protective Effects of Psoriasis Medications
Psoriasis management can be challenging, complicated sometimes by being associated with other systematic inflammatory diseases including metabolic syndrome, myocardial infarction, hypertension, obesity, diabetes mellitus, and hyperlipidemia. Of particularly concern is its cardiovascular linkage. It is noteworthy and reassuring that some therapeutic options for psoriasis may be cardio-protective. We highlight phototherapy, methotrexate, and TNF alpha inhibitors and other biological agents for psoriasis that may lower the risk of cardiovascular events. Ways to reduce cardiovascular risk in patients with psoriasis should be en...

Association between Immunofluorescence Pattern and Mucosal Involvement in Patients with Bullous Pemphigoid
Bullous pemphigoid is an acquired autoimmune subepidermal blistering disease which is associated with mucocutaneous lesions. The type and amount of autoantibody deposition may have a role in mucosal lesions. We studied the association between mucosal involvement and direct immunofluorescence pattern in cutaneous lesions of patients with bullous pemphigoid. In this retrospective analytical cross-sectional study, we studied the demographic data, clinical presentations, and immunopathological findings of 69 patients with bullous pemphigoid admitted to our hospital 2008-2016. Patients were allocated into two groups on the basis...

An Epidemiological and Clinical Analysis of Cutaneous Adverse Drug Reactions Seen in a Tertiary Care Outpatient Clinic in Cairo, Egypt
In conclusion, incidence of CADRs in our study was similar to incidence reported in different countries; however, the incidence of life-threatening reactions such as SJS/TEN was higher compared with studies conducted abroad. (Source: Acta Dermatovenerologica Croatica)

Pemphigus Associated with Psoriasis Vulgaris: A Retrospective Study of Seven Patients and a Review of the Literature
The aim of this study was to analyze the characteristics and the treatment for patients with psoriasis who presented with subsequent pemphigus after their treatment.A retrospective study of seven patients with psoriasis associated with pemphigus was performed, including the clinical assessment and treatments. The patients with a median age of 74 (range from 54 to 85) were significantly older than those in previously reported cases, where the median age was 58 (range from 15 to 77) (P<0.05). Six out of seven patients were male, which represents a higher ratio than that reported in literature (10/20). The duration between...

Social Appearance Anxiety in Adult Patients with Acne: A Cross-Sectional Study
The severity of acne may not directly reflect the psychological state of a patient. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the social appearance anxiety with overall morbidity in patients with acne. One hundred adult patients with acne and 67 age and sex-matched healthy controls were enrolled in the study. The patients and controls were asked to complete the Social Appearance Anxiety Scale (SAAS) and the General Health Questionnaire-12 (GHQ-12). Acne severity was evaluated objectively by the Global Acne Grading System (GAGS) and subjectively by the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS).   The mean score on SAAS (37.69±13.53;...

Chronic Recurrent Multifocal Osteomyelitis (CRMO) and Synovitis Acne Pustulosis Hyperostosis Osteitis (SAPHO) Syndrome – Two Presentations of the Same Disease?
In conclusion, CRMO and SAPHO syndrome have an array of common characteristics, but also a number of differences. Nevertheless, further investigation into the etiopathog enesis is required to establish a definite relationship between CRMO and SAPHO.  (Source: Acta Dermatovenerologica Croatica)

Evaluation of an Integrated Cell Culture-based and PCR Assay for Diagnosis of Genital Herpes in Women
Diagnosis of genital herpes requires a combination of clinical presentation and laboratory studies. Laboratory diagnostics allow us to clearly establish the etiology (HSV-1 or HSV-2) in order to determine the course of infection and prognosis. Decisive factors in the selection of the appropriate test are: diagnostic goals, patient population, specimen type, and implementation of conditions for the specific method. In total, 187 samples collected during a routine gynecological examination from 120 women were examined for the presence of HSV-1 and HSV-2 in the genital area. Two methods were used to test swabs: cell culture i...

Is there any Correlation between Red Cell Distribution Width, Mean Platelet Volume Neutrophil Count, Lymphocyte Count, and Psoriasis Area Severity Index in Patients Under Treatment for Psoriasis?
In this study, we investigated the possible association between the hematological parameters, namely neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), red cell distribution width (RDW), and Psoriasis Area Severity Index (PASI) scores, in patients under treatment for psoriasis.Forty-five patients with moderate to severe psoriasis and PASI values of 7 or greater were included in the study. Patients with other inflammatory diseases were excluded. All the patients were treated according to the severity of the disease.Hematological parameters and PASI were examined at baseline and at month 3, 6, 9, and 12.T...

Bullous pemphigoid associated with ischemic cerebrovascular accident and dementia: Exclusive blistering lesions on the upper hemiparetic limb
Bullous pemphigoid (BP) has been associated with neurological disorders (NDs), which has led to the hypothesis that molecular mimicry exists between hemidesmosomal proteins and neuronal peptides. A 79-year-old hemiparetic woman presented with tense bullae affecting exclusively her right paretic upper limb for three months. Histopathology, taken from the perilesional area, revealed an inflammatory infiltrate with predominant eosinophils. IIF evidenced linear IgG deposition in the epidermal side of the cleavage. ELISA detected circulating anti-BP180 and anti-BP230 autoantibodies. Immunoblotting exhibited unspecific reactivit...

Tumor necrosis factor antagonists in the treatment of pyoderma gangrenosum, acne and suppurative hidradenitis (PASH) syndrome
The clinical triad of pyoderma gangrenosum (PG), acne and suppurative hidradenitis (HS) has been described under the acronym PASH syndrome and is considered to represent a distinct entity in the group of autoinflammatory diseases. It is a fairly new, only recently recognized disorder with a limited number of reported cases and without defined treatment recommendations. We aimed to summarize currently available data on the use of tumor necrosis factor (TNF) antagonists in the management of PASH syndrome and report on our own experience with the use of adalimumab in a patient presenting with this specific constellation of cl...

The first reported case of trichothiodystrophy in Hungary: A young male patient with mutations in the ERCC2 gene
Trichothiodystrophy, also called sulphur-deficient brittle hair syndrome, is a rare autosomal recessive genetic disorder of DNA repair and transcription. Trichothiodysthrophy is characterised by dry, thin, easily broken hair, showing alternating light and dark pattern called ‘tiger tail’ banding under polarizing light microscopy. According to our knowledge, our report is the first one on this rare disorder from Hungary: a case of a 9-year-old boy showing clinical features typical of trichotiodystrophy. Sequence analysis of theERCC2gene identified two recurrent trichothidodystrophy missense heterozygous mutations – c....
