Psychological stress in patients with atopic dermatitis
Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a frequent dermatosis with a growing incidence and multifactorial and complex pathogenic mechanisms that are still being investigated. Although the connection between AD and psychological stress has been known for a long time, there is a lack of reliable and objective indicators for the characterization of this association. Psychological stress triggers complex immune pathways. Therefore, acute stress quickly triggers a high release of cortisol and adrenalin or noradrenalin which then stimulates the immune system, primarily T-helper type 1 (Th1 cells) to produce pro-inflammatory cytokines, resulti...

Hidradenitis suppurativa is associated with higher heart rate but not atrial fibrillation: A comparative cross-sectional study of 462 individuals with hidradenitis suppurativa in Denmark
Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory dermatological disease with inflammatory mechanisms overlapping those of psoriasis, and both diseases have been associated with cardiovascular risk factors i.e. smoking and metabolic syndrome. Two studies have recently linked psoriasis with Atrial Fibrillation (AF). AF is the most frequently occurring cardiac arrhythmia in the general population and is typically accompanied by increased heart rate. Both AF and heart rate are linked with inflammation. The aim of the study was to investigate a potential association between HS and increased heart rate as well as AF.We per...

Evaluation of ear, nose and throat involvement in pemphigus vulgaris in comparison with pemphigus severity scoring systems: a cross-sectional study
This study was designed to evaluate the real extent of PV in ENT areas and to find out the specific scores which indicate the need for ENT examination. The patients were evaluated for ENT manifestations by endoscopic examination whether or not they exhibited symptoms. PDAI, ABSIS, and ENT scores were calculated, and the results were compared for correlation and significance. The mucosal involvement was more severe when scored by ENT examination than when assessed by PDAI or ABSIS. The ENT score was significantly associated with symptoms and endoscopic findings, especially when PDAI ≥15 and/or ABSIS ≥17. ENT endoscopic ...

Perifolliculitis Capitis Abscedens et Suffodiens Treated with Anti-tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha – Possible New Treatment Option
The case of a 26-year-old male patient with perifolliculitis capitis abscedens et suffodiens (PCAS) who later developed hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) and exacerbation of acne is presented. The patient did not respond well to conventional treatment including isotretinoin and oral antibiotics. Quality of life was significantly impaired. After introduction of anti-tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF- α) treatment, the patient’s clinical picture improved dramatically and quality of life increased. The treatment has been well tolerated by the patient for 15 months at time of writing this report.  (Source: Acta Dermatovenerologica Croatica)
