Rituximab for the therapy of systemic sclerosis: a series of 10 cases in a single center
This study was conducted with the aim to retrospectively evaluate all patients who used RTX for the treatment of SSc in our center. Patients and methods We retrospectively evaluated medical records of all patients with SSc who used RTX to treat this disease from January 2009 to January 2015. Systemic, cutaneous, and pulmonary involvement data and laboratory results before and six months after the first infusion of RTX were collected. Results Ten patients received treatment during the study period and were included in this series. All patients had a diffuse form of the disease. Five patients suffered from an early (durati...

IL33 in rheumatoid arthritis: potential contribution to pathogenesis
ABSTRACT A better understanding of the inflammatory mechanisms of rheumatoid arthritis and the development of biological therapy revolutionized its treatment, enabling an interference in the synovitis – structural damage – functional disability cycle. Interleukin 33 was recently described as a new member of the interleukin-1 family, whose common feature is its pro-inflammatory activity. Its involvement in the pathogenesis of a variety of diseases, including autoimmune diseases, raises the interest in the possible relationship with rheumatoid arthritis. Its action has been evaluated in experimental models of arthritis...

What rheumatologists should know about orofacial manifestations of autoimmune rheumatic diseases
This article reviews the main orofaci al manifestations of rheumatic diseases that may be of interest to the rheumatologist for diagnosis and monitoring of autoimmune rheumatic diseases.RESUMO Manifesta ções orofaciais ocorrem com frequência nas doenças reumáticas e, comumente, representam sinais iniciais ou de atividade da doença que ainda são negligenciados na prática clínica. Entre as doenças reumáticas autoimunes com possíveis manifestações orais, incluem-se a artrite reumatoide ( AR), miopatias inflamatórias (MI), esclerose sistêmica (ES), lúpus eritematoso sistêmico (LES), policondrite recidivante (...

Clinical characteristics and frequency of TLR4 polymorphisms in Brazilian patients with ankylosing spondylitis
Conclusions: TLR4 polymorphisms 399 and 299 were not more frequent in patients with AS in comparison to the health controls and none of the clinical variables were associated with these polymorphisms.RESUMO Objetivos: A imunidade inata est á envolvida na fisiopatologia da espondilite anquilosante (EA), com a participação de bactérias gram-negativas, modulação do antígeno leucocitário humano (HLA) B27 e o envolvimento de receptores de reconhecimento de padrões, como os receptores Toll-like (TLR).

A new musculoskeletal ultrasound scoring system (US10) of the hands and wrist joints for evaluation of early rheumatoid arthritis patients
Conclusion: The proposed US10 scoring system proved to be a useful tool for monitoring inflammation and joint damage in early RA patients, demonstrating significant correlations with longitudinal changes in disease activity and functional status.RESUMO Objetivo: Propor um novo sistema de escore ultrassonogr áfico das articulações da mão e punho (US10) para a avaliação de pacientes com artrite reumatoide (AR) e correlacionar o US10 com variáveis clínicas, laboratoriais e funcionais.

Methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase, transforming growth factor-β1 and lymphotoxin-α genes polymorphisms and susceptibility to rheumatoid arthritis
Conclusion: Our findings suggest that there is association between MTHFR C677 T and LT- α A252G genes polymorphisms and increased risk of RA in this sample of Egyptian population.RESUMO Antecedentes: A artrite reumatoide é uma doença autoimune amplamente prevalente com sugerida predisposição genética.

Sensitivity and specificity of assessment instruments of quality of life in rheumatoid arthritis
Conclusion: For evaluation of the physical aspects in patients with RA, the HAQ is the most accurate. For evaluation of emotional aspects the NHP is the most indicated, although the SF-36 was the only one in the evaluation of general domains.RESUMO Objetivo: Verificar a sensibilidade e a especificidade dos instrumentos de avalia ção da qualidade de vida em pacientes com artrite reumatoide (AR).

The representation of getting ill in adolescents with systemic lupus erythematosus
Conclusions: Considering as subjective and dynamic the experience of getting ill, knowing the representations can contribute to the orientation of conduct and type of psychotherapeutic intervention needed.RESUMO Introdu ção: Esse estudo, feito em um hospital federal na cidade do Rio de Janeiro, teve por objetivo analisar a representação social da doença crônica e de seu tratamento, na perspectiva de adolescentes e de seus cuidadores.

High frequency of asymptomatic hyperparathyroidism in patients with fibromyalgia: random association or misdiagnosis?
Conclusions: A high frequency of hyperparathyroidism was noted in women with FM versus the general population. Normocalcemic hyperparathyroidism was also more frequent in patients with FM. Longitudinal studies with greater number of patients are needed to assess w hether this is an association by chance only, if the increased serum levels of PTH are part of FM pathophysiology, or even if these would not be cases of FM, but of hyperparathyroidism.RESUMO A fibromialgia (FM) e o hiperparatireoidismo podem apresentar sintomas semelhantes (dores osteomusculares, dist úrbios cognitivos, insônia, depressão e ansiedade) e causa...

A prospective study predicting the outcome of chronic low back pain and physical therapy: the role of fear-avoidance beliefs and extraspinal pain
Conclusion: We identified high FABQ-work and extraspinal pain scores as key determinants of a worse response to physical therapy among CLBP patients, supporting the need for a special rehabilitation program for this subgroup.RESUMO Objetivo: Identificar os fatores progn ósticos para a fisioterapia convencional em pacientes com lombalgia mecânica comum crônica (LMC). The European Portuguese adaptation of the Fear of Pain Questionnaire
ABSTRACT In Portugal, it is estimated that chronic pain affects 36.7% of the population, constituting a multifactorial phenomenon with great impact at individual, family, community, and social levels. In the fear-avoidance model of pain, one of the most consistent consensual in the literature, the fear arises as one of the variables that can contribute to the development and maintenance of this condition. Thus, instruments for evaluating the fear of pain, as Fear of Pain Questionnaire (FPQ-III), may be useful in the conceptualization of the subjective experience of pain. Accordingly, this paper aims to describe the adaptat...
