Publication date: Available online 18 October 2016 Source:Revista Brasileira de Reumatologia (English Edition) Author(s): Satoshi Suzuki, Souichiro Nakano, Seiichiro Ando, Ran Matsudaira, Yoshinori Kanai, Kenjiro Yamanaka, Yoshinari Takasaki Anemia often develops in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients. In the present study, we examined the association between the therapeutic effectiveness of the biologic agent tocilizumab (TCZ) and potential predictors of therapeutic effectiveness. We focused on the amelioration of anemia of chronic inflammation through the mechanism of direct inhibition of interleukin (IL)-6 recep...

Leprosy simulating systemic sclerosis: a case report
We report a case of leprosy with skin thickening, distal phalanx resorption and facial telangiectasia, simulating systemic sclerosis. Due to a considerable prevalence in Brazil, and also considering the deformities that can be caused by a delay in diagnosis and treatment, leprosy should be put forward by the rheumatologist as a diagnostic hypothesis in patients with musculoskeletal involvement. Correlation between cellular expression of complement regulatory proteins with depletion and repopulation of B-lymphocytes in peripheral blood of patients with rheumatoid arthritis treated with rituximab
Conclusion The increased CD46 expression was predictive of a faster repopulation of B-lymphocytes in patients treated with RTX. Studies involving a larger number of patients will be needed to confirm the utility of basal expression of CRPs as a predictor of clinical response. (Source: Revista Brasileira de Reumatologia)

Omega-3 fatty acids, inflammatory status and biochemical markers of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus: a pilot study
Conclusions Supplementation with omega-3 had no impact on serum concentrations of IL-6, IL-10, leptin and adiponectin in women with SLE and low disease activity. There was a significant decrease of CRP levels as well as evidence that omega-3 may impact total and LDL-cholesterol. (Source: Revista Brasileira de Reumatologia)

Falls and their association with physical tests, functional capacity, clinical and demographic factors in patients with rheumatoid arthritis
Conclusion It was observed that the occurrence of falls and the fear of falling are quite common in this population. The occurrence of falls in this sample of rheumatoid arthritis patients bears no relation to disease activity, functional capacity, or physical fitness tests. We evaluated the published studies to determine the prevalence of CTS and the characteristics of the median nerve in RA and its association with clinical parameters such as disease activity, disease dura...
