Higher body mass index and anti-drug antibodies predict the discontinuation of anti-TNF agents in Korean patients with axial spondyloarthritis
Conclusions Our result suggests that the presence of anti-drug antibodies against adalimumab and infliximab as well as a higher body mass index can predict subsequent drug discontinuation in axial spondyloarthritis patients. (Source: Revista Brasileira de Reumatologia)

Fixed-flexion knee radiography using a new positioning device produced highly repeatable measurements of joint space width: ELSA-Brasil Musculoskeletal Study (ELSA-Brasil MSK)
Conclusions Despite the difficulty in achieving consistent radioanatomic alignment between subsequent radiographs in terms of IMD, the protocol produced highly repeatable JSW measurements when these were taken at midpoint and 10mm from the medial extremity of the medial tibial plateau. Therefore, measurements of JSW at these locations can be considered adequate for the assessment of knee OA in ELSA-Brasil MSK. (Source: Revista Brasileira de Reumatologia)

Livedoid vasculopathy
ABSTRACT A question is raised about an increased risk of severe infection from the use of biological drugs in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. This systematic review of observational studies aimed at assessing the risk of severe infection associated with the use of anakinra, rituximab, and abatacept in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. The following databases were searched: PubMed, Science Direct, Scopus, Web of Knowledge, Scirus, Cochrane, Exerpta Medica Database, Scielo, and Lilacs up to July 2010. Severe infections were defined as those life-threatening ones in need of the use of parenteral antibiotics or of hospit...

Effects of aquatic exercise on muscle strength and functional performance of individuals with osteoarthritis: a systematic review
ABSTRACT Water-based exercises are recommended for people with osteoarthritis (OA), due to the beneficial effects on physical function, quality of life and symptom reduction. However, the effects on muscle strength are still controversial. The aim of this review was to assess and compare the effects of aquatic exercise programs on muscle strength and physical function in people with OA. A systematic search was performed at Pubmed, Scopus and Web of Science databases. Clinical trials with interventions involving aquatic exercises for individuals with OA were included. The methodological quality of the studies was evaluated ...

Polymorphisms in NAT2 (N-acetyltransferase 2) gene in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus
ABSTRACT Objective: To investigate potential associations of four substitutions in NAT2 gene and of acetylator phenotype of NAT2 with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and clinical phenotypes. Methods: Molecular analysis of 481C>T, 590G>A, 857G>A, and 191G>A substitutions in the NAT2 gene was performed by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) technique, from DNA extracted from peripheral blood samples obtained from patients with SLE (n = 91) and controls (n = 97). Results and conclusions: The 857GA genotype was more prevalent among nonwhite SLE patients (OR = 4.01, 95...

Fc gamma receptor IIIa polymorphism is not associated with susceptibility to systemic lupus erythematosus in Brazilian patients
ABSTRACT We evaluated the possible association between FCGR3A V/F (158) polymorphism and SLE susceptibility and clinical phenotype in 305 sequentially retrieved SLE patients and 300 healthy controls from the southeastern part of Brazil by allele-specific polymerase chain reaction. Our results showed no association between FCGR3A 158V/F alleles and susceptibility to SLE in this series of patients albeit the heterozygous genotype was strongly associated with the disease.RESUMO Avaliou-se a poss ível associação entre o polimorfismo FCGR3A V/F (158) e a suscetibilidade e o fenótipo clínico do lúpus eritematoso sistêmico...

Poor muscle strength and function in physically inactive childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus despite very mild disease
Conclusion: Physically inactive C-SLE patients with very mild disease showed reduced muscle strength and functionality when compared with healthy controls matched by physical activity levels. These findings suggest C-SLE patients may greatly suffer from a physically inactive lifestyle than healthy controls do. Moreover, some sub-clinical “ residual ” effect of the disease or its pharmacological treatment seems to affect C-SLE patients even with a well-controlled disease.RESUMO Objetivo: Comparar a for ça muscular (ou seja, a força muscular dos membros superiores e inferiores) e a capacidade funcional de pacientes f...

Mean platelet volume is decreased in adults with active lupus disease
Conclusions: In summary, MPV is decreased in adult patients with active lupus disease, and positively correlated with albumin, another biomarker of disease activity. Prospective studies are needed to evaluate the prognostic value of this biomarker.RESUMO Antecedentes: Existem poucos biomarcadores dispon íveis para avaliar a atividade da doença no lúpus eritematoso sistêmico (LES). O volume plaquetário médio (VPM) foi recentemente estudado como um biomarcador inflamatório. Atualmente não está claro se o VPM também pode desempenhar um papel como um biomarcador da atividade da doença em pac ientes adultos com LES....

Characterization of inflammatory markers associated with systemic lupus erythematosus patients undergoing treatment
Conclusion: Systemic lupus erythematosus patients receiving standard treatment presented with elevated systemic levels of interleukin-6 and interleukin-10, reduced neutrophil phagocytic capacity, and reduced lymphocyte expression of integrin even when symptoms were in remission. These alterations to innate immune components may put these individuals at a greater risk for acquiring infections.RESUMO Objetivo: Caracterizar os perfis inflamat órios de pacientes com lúpus eritematoso sistêmico (LES) que recebiam o tratamento padrão em comparação com controles saudáveis. Pacientes e métodos: Coletou-se o sangue venoso...

Intra-articular injection in patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis: factors associated with a good response
Conclusion: In our study, more than half of the joints showed a good response to IIC. Younger patients at diagnosis and uveitis during the course of the disease had good response to IIC. Knees, wrists and elbows were the joints that best responded to IIC.

Association of PDCD1 polymorphism to systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis susceptibility
Conclusion: There was no significant association between PD1.3 polymorphism and SLE or RA susceptibility in this Southern Brazilian population.RESUMO Objetivo: Este estudo teve como objetivo analisar a rela ção entre o polimorfismo do gene PDCD1 (programmed cell death 1) (PD1.3G/A - rs11568821) com características do lúpus eritematoso sistêmico (LES) e da artrite reumatoide (AR) em uma população do sul do Brasil. Métodos: A técnica de PCR-RFLP (Polymerase Chain Reaction-Restriction Fragment L enght Polymorphism) foi utilizada para analisar amostras de 95 pacientes com LES e 87 com AR, assim como em 128 indivídu...
