Low vitamin D serum levels in diffuse systemic sclerosis: a correlation with worst quality of life and severe capillaroscopic findings
Conclusion The present study provides novel evidence demonstrating that low levels of 25OHD have a negative impact in diffuse SSc QoL and further studies are needed to define whether vitamin D supplementation can improve health related QoL in these patients. The additional observation of a correlation with severe NC alterations suggests a possible role of 25OHD in the underlying SSc vascular involvement. (Source: Revista Brasileira de Reumatologia)

IL33 in rheumatoid arthritis: potential contribution to pathogenesis
Publication date: Available online 1 June 2016 Source:Revista Brasileira de Reumatologia (English Edition) Author(s): Rafaela Bicalho Viana Macedo, Adriana Maria Kakehasi, Marcus Vinicius Melo de Andrade A better understanding of the inflammatory mechanisms of rheumatoid arthritis and the development of biological therapy revolutionized its treatment, enabling an interference in the synovitis – structural damage – functional disability cycle. Interleukin 33 was recently described as a new member of the interleukin-1 family, whose common feature is its pro-inflammatory activity. Its involvement in the pathogen...

Sensitivity and specificity of assessment instruments of quality of life in rheumatoid arthritis
Conclusion For evaluation of the physical aspects in patients with RA, the HAQ is the most accurate. For evaluation of emotional aspects the NHP is the most indicated, although the SF-36 was the only one in the evaluation of general domains. (Source: Revista Brasileira de Reumatologia)

Mild and moderate Mannose Binding Lectin deficiency are associated with systemic lupus erythematosus and lupus nephritis in Brazilian patients
Conclusion This study shows that an association between MBL deficiency and SLE does exist in the Brazilian population. We also found an association between MBL deficiency and lupus nephritis. These findings support the hypothesis that MBL deficiency contributes to the development of SLE and lupus nephritis. (Source: Revista Brasileira de Reumatologia)

The effectiveness of Kinesio Taping on pain and disability in cervical myofascial pain syndrome
Conclusion This study shows that Kinesio Taping leads to improvements on pain, pressure pain threshold and cervical range of motion, but not disability in short time. Therefore, Kinesio Taping can be used as an alternative therapy method in the treatment of patients with MPS. (Source: Revista Brasileira de Reumatologia)

Importantly, this zoonosis should be considered in patients with arthritis andeosinophilia.RESUMO A toxocaríase é uma zoonose parasitária causada principalmente pelo Toxocara canis ou peloT. cati. É adquirida pela ingestão de ovos embrionados do parasita. A artralgia e/ou artriteforam relatadas em até 17% dos casos, geralmente com duração aguda (menos de seis sema-nas). Acute acalculous cholecystitis in systemic lupus erythematosus: a rare initial manifestation
ABSTRACT Acute acalculous cholecystitis is a very rare gastrointestinal manifestation in systemic lupus erythematosus and becomes rarer as an initial manifestation. There are only two cases reported. The authors report a 20-year-old black woman that presented acute acalculous cholecystitis revealed by abdominal computed tomography. During hospitalization, she was diagnosed systemic lupus erythematosus. Conservative treatment with antibiotics was performed with complete remission of the symptoms. Corticosteroid was started in ambulatory. Cholecystectomy has been the treatment of choice in acute acalculous cholecystitis as a...

Association between rheumatic fever and Takayasu’s arteritis – Case report
ABSTRACT Takayasu’s arteritis (TA) and rheumatic fever are diseases that can start with cardiac fea-tures, making the diagnosis difficult. There are reports of association of RF with Takayasu’sarteritis beginning with cardiac involvement in pediatric patients. The aim of this study isto report the possible association of RF and TA in patients with cardiac abnormalities. Wedescribe the case of an adolescent initially diagnosed with RF who progressed with changesthat allowed making the diagnosis of TA. TA and RF are two important causes of valveinvolvement that may have systemic manifestations.RESUMO A arterite de Takaya...
