Combination of low dose major n3 PUFAs in fresh water mussel lipid is an alternative of EPA-DHA supplementation in inflammatory conditions of arthritis and LPS stimulated macrophages
This study, for the first time, showed anti-inflammatory potential of lipid from a fresh water species. It has also raised the possibility of the presence of balanced fatty acid combination in a dietary dose, rather than the established EPA-DHA supplement, to be more effective against inflammatory conditions of arthritis and LPS stimulated macrophages. Isohumulones from Hops (Humulus lupulus) and their Potential Role in Medical Nutrition Therapy
Publication date: Available online 9 March 2015 Source:PharmaNutrition Author(s): Jeffrey S. Bland , Deanna Minich , Robert Lerman , Gary Darland , Joseph Lamb , Matthew Tripp , Neile Grayson The lipophilic extracts of the common hops (Humulus lupulus) contain compounds that are readily modified to the family of isohumulones (eg. iso-alpha acids). The isohumulones have been found to reduce metabolic inflammation and insulin resistance, and positively impact dyslipidemia and obesity. These effects are consistent across studies in multiple cell lines, animal model systems and human intervention trials. Mechanistic...

Poliphenolic-rich extracts from cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) and cupuassu (Theobroma grandiflorum Willd. Ex Spreng. K. Shum) liquors: A comparison of metabolic effects in high-fat fed rats
Publication date: Available online 23 January 2015 Source:PharmaNutrition Author(s): Thiago Belchior de Oliveira , Marcelo Macedo Rogero , Maria Inés Genovese Cocoa (Theobroma cacao) is appreciated by its flavor and high content of bioactive compounds. A Brazilian Amazon Rainforest fruit, cupuassu (Theobroma grandiflorum), emerges as another Theobromaceae fruit with health potential. Here, we investigated the role of phenolic-rich extracts from cocoa and cupuassu liquors upon oxidative stress and metabolic changes associated with a high fat diet (HFD). The main flavonoids in cupuassu liquor extract were Hypolaetin-...

Roles of diets and dietary factors in the pathogenesis, management and prevention of abnormal serum uric acid levels
This article reviews the literature on the effects of diets and dietary factors on serum UA levels. The most recently published studies make dietary recommendations aiming to modulate UA levels, including the consumption of low-fat dairy products, whole grains, vegetables, fruits, nuts, legumes, vitamin C, and coffee as well as the moderation of sugary foods, meats and meat products, seafood, and sugar-sweetened beverages. Individuals with gout should avoid consuming organ meats, sweet breads, high fructose corn syrup, sweetened beverages, and alcohol and should avoid alcohol altogether during periods of frequent gout atta...

Carnosic acid inhibits the formation of osteoclasts through attenuation of expression of RANKL
Publication date: Available online 29 November 2014 Source:PharmaNutrition Author(s): Hiromi Hagiwara , Roshan Basnet , Sundari I. Wiyasihati , Kyoko Nakata , Keitaro Hagiwara , Hitoshi Miyazaki , Kaoru Yoshida Carnosic acid is a major polyphenol of rosemary and possesses potent anti-oxidant effects. The present study was designed to evaluate in vitro and in vivo effects of carnosic acid on bone formation and maintenance. Carnosic acid attenuated H2O2 levels in osteoblastic MC3T3-E1 cells. This compound also inhibited the indices of osteoblast differentiation, such as alkaline phosphatase activity and calcium de...

Effects of fish scale collagen peptide on an experimental ulcerative colitis mouse model
Publication date: Available online 17 October 2014 Source:PharmaNutrition Author(s): Kazuo Azuma , Tomohiro Osaki , Takeshi Tsuka , Tomohiro Imagawa , Yoshiharu Okamoto , Saburo Minami The aim of this study was to understand the effects of fish scale collagen peptide (SC) on an experimental ulcerative colitis (UC) mouse model. SC shortened colon length, increased colon weight/length ratio, and ameliorated histological tissue injury in dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced acute UC mice. SC suppressed inflammation in acute UC by decreasing myeloperoxidase-dependent activation of inflammatory cells such as leukocyte...
