Dyslipidemia in pregnancy and maternal-fetal outcome.
Authors: Nasioudis D, Doulaveris G, Kanninen TT Abstract Hyperlipidemia is a known cause of atherosclerosis and directly contributes to the current epidemic in cardio-vascular disease. Pregnancy is typified by an increase in serum levels of total cholesterol and triglycerides pushed by the rise in estrogen, progesterone and lactogen. Mobilization of stored fat depots in late pregnancy may provide a reservoir of fatty acids for fetal growth and placental tissue steroid synthesis. This physiologic increase in lipids performs an essential role during pregnancy; however, elevated levels of lipids in predispose...

Role of robotic surgery on pelvic floor reconstruction.
Authors: Giannini A, Russo E, Malacarne E, Cecchi E, Mannella P, Simoncini T Abstract Over the past two decades, minimally invasive surgery (MIS) abdominal surgery has increasingly been used to treat pelvic organ prolapse. Besides the several advantages associated with minimal invasiveness, this approach bridged the gap between the benefits of vaginal surgery with the surgical success rates of open abdominal procedures. The most commonly performed procedure for suspension of the vaginal apex for postoperative vaginal prolapse by robotic-assisted laparoscopy is the sacrocolpopexy. Conventional laparoscopic ...

Fetal anemia.
Authors: Argoti PS, Mari G Abstract The diagnosis and management of fetal anemia has been at the forefront of advances in the fields of fetal physiology, immunology, fetal imaging, and fetal therapy among others. Alloimmunization and parvovirus infection are the leading cause of fetal anemia in the United States. The middle cerebral artery peak systolic velocity (MCA-PSV)diagnoses fetal anemia. Its discovery is considered one of the most important achievements in fetal medicine. Accumulation of experience in recent years as well as refinement of surgical techniques have led to safer invasive procedures. It...

Effects of progestogens in women with preterm premature rupture of membranes.
Authors: Di Sarno R, Raffone A, Saccone G Abstract Different strategies have been adopted for prevention of spontaneous preterm birth, including use of progestogens. So far, five randomized trials have been published evaluating the efficacy of progestogens in women with PPROM, including a total of 425 partipants. All the five trials enrolled pregnant women with singleton pregnancies randomized between 20 and 34 weeks of gestation. In four trials women were randomized to either weekly intramuscular 250 mg 17α-hydroxyprogesterone-caproate or placebo, while Mirzaei et al. was a three arms trials in which wom...

Errors and pitfalls in reading the cardiotocographic tracing.
Authors: Di Tommaso M, Seravalli V, Petraglia F Abstract Reading of fetal heart rate (FHR) tracing during labor remains one of the most controversial and problematic issues in Obstetrics. The incorrect interpretation of CTG can be due to errors and pitfalls. Some common errors are related to the incorrect use of oxytocin, specifically to the failure to recognize tachysystole, to correct it and to use oxytocin to accelerate labor when the fetal heart rate tracing is not reassuring. A common error is also the incorrect interpretation of deceleration that leads to unnecessary and often dangerous interventions...

Sentinel Node biopsy for treatment of endometrial cancer. State of the art.
Authors: Papadia A, Gasparri ML, Wang J, Radan AP, Mueller MD Abstract The risk of lymph nodal metastases in endometrial cancer varies greatly according to the characteristics of the primary tumor. Surgical staging with a systematic lymphadenectomy in endometrial cancer is debated since three decades. On one hand, it provides important pathological information on the spread of the tumor allowing for an appropriate decision making on adjuvant treatment but on the other side it is characterized by a non negligible short and long term morbidity. In the past decades, various efforts have been made in the attem...

Optimal settings for childbirth.
CONCLUSIONS: The key elements identified in this paper have the potential to inform further investigations for the design or renovation of all birth places (including hospitals) in order to optimise the salutogenic component of any setting in any country. Postpartum stretchmarks: repairing activity of an oral Centella asiatica supplementation (Centellicum ®).
CONCLUSIONS: Oral supplementation with Centellicum® appears to improve SMs in a relatively short period of time. Larger studies are needed to evaluate the protective and repairing potentials of CA. PMID: 30293400 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Minerva Ginecologica)

Humanities in the undergraduate medical and midwifery curriculum: a descriptive Italian comparative study.
CONCLUSIONS: A greater breadth of humanities studies was included in midwifery schools. However, their relative importance appears to be low, given the low level of academic credits and lack of presence as independent subjects. Optimal outcomes and women's positive pregnancy experience: a comparison between the World Health Organization guideline and recommendations in European national antenatal care guidelines.
CONCLUSIONS: Findings outline convergences and divergences with the WHO recommendations. They highlight the need for considering women's views more in the development of evidence-based recommendations and in practice for positive impacts on perinatal health at a global level, and on the experiences of each family. Ovarian tumors secreting androgens: an infrequent cause of hyperandrogenism.
CONCLUSIONS: Sex cord stromal tumors of the ovary are rare, and can be characterized by virilization for most patients. The majority of the tumors are benign, with few cases having low-grade malignancy. The suspicion and correct evaluation of these women will lead to an early diagnosis and improve their quality of life. Effectiveness, quality of life and sexual functions in women with anterior compartment prolapse treated by native tissue repair: a mini-review.
Authors: Monti M, Schiavi MC, Colagiovanni V, Sciuga V, D'oria O, Cerone G, Scudo M, Zullo MA, Muzii L, Benedetti Panici P Abstract Anterior compartment defect is the most common pelvic organ prolapse. It is defined as the descent of the bladder into the anterior vaginal wall. The etiology is multifactorial and the main risk factors are vaginal delivery and conditions associated with increased abdominal strain. Aging is significantly associated with the prevalence and severity of pelvic organ prolapse. Treatment may be conservative or surgical according to symptoms, prolapse degree and not forgetting both ...

Efficacy of needle retractor device in single-incision slings for treatment of stress urinary incontinence.
CONCLUSIONS: The current study showed that the presence of a needle retractor device to avoid unintentional tip displacement for single-incision sling had no impact on objective and subjective postoperative continence. However, a reduced rate of de novo overactive bladder syndrome was observed after implantation of single-incision sling with needle retractor.
