Causes of acquired erythroderma in adults presenting to a tertiary care centre in Cairo, Egypt
Conclusion: A pre-existing dermatosis was the most common cause of erythroderma. Meticulous clinical and pathological evaluation remains the cornerstone in identifying the underlying cause of erythroderma in countries with limited resources for auxiliary investigations. The effect of different speeds of centrifugation on platelet-rich plasma preparation
Conclusion: Laboratory preparation of PRP, especially that obtained without centrifugation, or using lower centrifugation speed, yields higher platelet concentration. Centrifugation at low speed is preferable as it saves time, avoids sample contamination, and preserves platelets. (Source: Journal of the Egyptian Women’s Dermatologic Society)

Role of onychoscopy in differentiation between distal subungual onychomycosis, psoriasis, and traumatic onycholysis
Conclusion: Longitudinal striae and jagged edge with spikes patterns were distinctive dermoscopic signs, exclusive to distal subungual onychomycosis. Dermoscopy should be considered a helpful, quite simple, quick, and inexpensive technique for diagnosis and differentiation between distal subungual onychomycosis, psoriasis, and traumatic onycholysis. Evaluation of biomarkers of oxidant–antioxidant balance in patients with acne vulgaris
This study was conducted on 40 acne vulgaris patients and 36 age-matched and sex-matched healthy controls. Patients were classified into mild, moderate, severe, and very severe on the basis of the Global Acne Grading System. Venous blood samples taken from both patients and controls were analyzed to determine the activity of the antioxidant enzymes: superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD); the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), a major by-product and an important marker of lipid peroxidation, were also determined. Different laboratory techniques suitable for each marker were u...

Peripheral natural killer cell subsets in atopic dermatitis
Conclusion: Atopic dermatitis is associated with quantitative and qualitative changes in the frequency and phenotype of peripheral NK cells, supporting the implication of these innate effectors in skin inflammation. The CD3−CD56dim subset can be used as a marker for assessing atopic dermatitis severity. (Source: Journal of the Egyptian Women’s Dermatologic Society)

Histological and quantitative morphometric evaluation of striae distensae treated by long-pulsed 1064-nm Nd: YAG laser
Conclusion: Although the clinical improvement in the treated striae was nonsignificant, the histological improvement was significant, with few side effects. The use of different laser parameters with a long follow-up period may improve the clinical response. (Source: Journal of the Egyptian Women’s Dermatologic Society)

Citric acid 50% solution versus tretinoin 0.05% lotion in the treatment of plane warts
Background: The course of human papilloma virus infection varies considerably and there are many modalities of therapy, reflecting that none is uniformly effective. Objective: To evaluate and compare the efficacy of 50% citric acid solution in water versus 0.05% tretinoin lotion for the treatment of plane wart in a sample of Egyptian patients. Patients and methods: Ninety patients with plane warts were included in this randomized comparative therapeutic study with age range from 7 to 34 years. The selected patients were divided into two treatment groups, wherein group I applied 50% citric acid solution twice daily and grou...

Profile of vitiligo among the attendants of phototherapy units in two university hospitals in Assiut, Upper Egypt
Conclusion: From this study a hypothesis was generated outlining a profile for vitiligo patients in Assiut. We concluded that vitiligo most commonly occurs in the first two decades of life and more commonly in the female population. Vitiligo vulgaris was the most common clinical type observed. The minority had a positive family history, whereas the majority had progressive course of the disease. Leukotrichia was the most commonly associated abnormality. Vitiligo is less often associated with systemic diseases. (Source: Journal of the Egyptian Women’s Dermatologic Society)

Microneedling system alone versus microneedling system with trichloroacetic acid in the management of abdominal striae rubra: a clinical and histopathological study
Background: Striae distensae or stretch marks, although not a health risk, are of significant cosmetic concern as it affects the patient’s psychological condition. Although many treatment modalities have been attempted with variable results, there is no standard treatment modality for it. Objective: To compare the efficacy of a microneedling system (dermaroller) when used alone or combined with 15–30% trichloroacetic acid (TCA) in the management of striae rubra. Patients and methods: This clinical trial included 30 female patients with abdominal striae rubra treated with a dermaroller alone on the left side of the abdo...

Background: Systemic chemotherapy or radiotherapy may produce several cutaneous manifestations. An awareness of possible associations between internal malignancies and cutaneous manifestations is therefore important in the diagnosis and management of cancer. Objective: In the present work, assessment of the prevalence of cutaneous manifestations in patients with haematological malignancy was performed. Patients and methods: A total of 160 patients diagnosed with haematological malignancies were subjected to full history taking, cutaneous examination and photography of positive clinical findings, routine laboratory investig...

Evaluation of the serum level of regulation upon activation of normal T-cell expressed and secreted protein in different types of alopecia areata
Conclusion: The elevation of serum RANTES levels in AA and its correlation with the disease activity suggests a significant role in the development of AA through the chemoattraction of T cells. Therefore, its assessment appears to be useful as a marker of disease activity and severity, while inhibiting its production may provide a therapeutic benefit. A review of itch: causes, neurophysiology, interpretation, and treatment options
Itch can be one of the most difficult complaints for physicians to treat. The cause of itch, especially if chronic, is often elusive. A body of research has emerged that has shed light on many of the mechanisms governing this common complaint. These mechanisms include the detection of pruritogens (pruritic stimuli) by specific subsets of neurons that transmit and modulate signals through the spinal cord to the brain for interpretation. A host of exogenous and endogeneous pruritogens have been discovered, along with the subsets of neurons, receptors, and pathways responsible for the sensation they cause. This knowledge has ...
