Association of CAT 389 T/C and − 89 T/A gene polymorphisms with vitiligo: relation with oxidative stress
Conclusion: The T allele of CAT 389 may be a susceptibility risk factor for vitiligo and the combined CCAT genotype may be protective in the studied sample of patients. Decreased levels of CAT with increased levels of MDA may indicate increased oxidative stress in nonsegmental vitiligo patients. (Source: Journal of the Egyptian Women’s Dermatologic Society)

Relationship between microRNA-369-3p, SIRT1, and IL-22 in psoriasis vulgaris
Conclusion: MicroRNA-369-3p may play a role in the pathogenesis of psoriasis by regulating the expression of other predicted target genes, but not that of SIRT1. (Source: Journal of the Egyptian Women’s Dermatologic Society)

Use of online social media by female dermatology residents to communicate with their patients
Conclusion: Although the use of social media, especially Facebook, is very common among female dermatology residents, the telephone still remains the most common method for interaction with patients. Dermatologists find it appropriate to interact with their patients professionally through e-mail; however, most of them never discuss social media usage with their patients. This reflects the technological gap between doctors and most patients, especially in rural areas. Inability to have proper medical information is a consequence of lack of proper use of internet by many patients. (Source: Journal of the Egyptian Women’s Dermatologic Society)

Evaluation of carcinogenic risk of PUVA versus Re-PUVA in psoriatic patients
Conclusion: Re-PUVA was able to achieve the same clinical response as PUVA in psoriasis patients, but with an earlier onset of clinical response, lower UVA cumulative dose, less DNA damage in the serum, and hence a lower carcinogenic potential. Metabolic syndrome in Egyptian patients with vitiligo: a case–control study
Conclusion: Vitiligo patients showed a better lipid profile, with higher levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and lower TGs and WC values. In patients with vitiligo, increased insulin levels and insulin resistance may be related to other mechanisms than obesity, such as production of cytokines or autoimmune reaction to melanocytes. Further large-scale studies are needed to confirm these findings. (Source: Journal of the Egyptian Women’s Dermatologic Society)

A comparative clinical and histopathological study of microneedling versus microdermabrasion (aluminum oxide crystals) in the treatment of striae distensae
Conclusion: Microneedling was more effective but less tolerable than microdermabrasion in the treatment of striae distensae. Both microneedling and microdermabrasion were more effective for the treatment of striae rubrae than striae alba. (Source: Journal of the Egyptian Women’s Dermatologic Society)

Clinical, bacteriological, and dermoscopic study of pitted keratolysis
Conclusion: Dermoscopy is useful in the diagnosis of pitted keratolysis. Bacteriological examination helps to identify the type of organism in the lesion but does not confirm that the lesion in the foot is pitted keratolysis. The type of organism does not correlate with the dermoscopic criteria. Larger-scale studies correlating dermoscopic findings with bacteriological and histopathological results are recommended to improve the understanding of the dermoscopic criteria. Species identification of dermatophytes isolated from human superficial fungal infections by conventional and molecular methods
Conclusion: Although the molecular method is rapid and represents technological advancement in the identification of dermatophytes, it is too expensive to be used as a routine method and needs more effort. We recommend its use in the absence of skilled mycologists or in atypical and variants of dermatophytes. (Source: Journal of the Egyptian Women’s Dermatologic Society)

Review of the role of Janus kinase inhibitors in dermatology
Janus kinase (JAK) inhibition suppresses inflammation and immune cell activation in T-cell-mediated disorders by interrupting intracellular signaling. Because of these properties, JAK inhibitors are being investigated as possible therapeutic agents. The available scientific literature has been reviewed in an effort to evaluate the profile of JAK inhibitors and their role as investigational compounds in the treatment of various dermatologic conditions with a particular focus on the treatment of alopecia areata, vitiligo, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, and cutaneous dermatomyositis. Evaluation of fluorescence microscopy using acridine orange stain versus hematoxylin and eosin stain in the diagnosis of onychomycosis
Background: Fluorescent microscope examination of films stained with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) stain was recommended for its diagnostic utility in the identification of fungal structures. Objective: To evaluate acridine orange (AO) stain versus H&E stain in the diagnosis of onychomycosis by a fluorescence microscope. Patients and methods: Thirty-five patients with clinically suspected onychomycosis were subjected to an examination of their nail samples by potassium hydroxide 20% direct light microscopic examination, mycological culture by light microscopy, and fluorescence microscope using AO stain and H&E stain. Resu...

Validity of hair selenium analysis as a biomarker of selenium concentration among Egyptian patients with psoriasis vulgaris
Introduction: Scalp hairs are filaments that can record and reflect changes in the metabolism of body elements over a prolonged time. Testing for hair metals represents a tool that provides clues about the mineral status in the body. The potential contribution of oxidative stress and antioxidant defense exhaustion has received significant attention for the determination of the pathogenesis of psoriasis. Objective: To determine the utility of hair selenium (Se) level as a monitoring tool, by assessing the levels of Se in hair and serum samples of patients with psoriasis vulgaris (PsV), and correlating these levels with PsV...

Preliminary evaluation of the clinical efficacy of antihistamines as an adjuvant treatment to isotretinoin for acne vulgaris
Conclusion: Acne patients may experience better efficacy and clinical cure from the adjuvant use of H1-antagonists in combination with systemic isotrertinoin, although the occurrence of cutaneous side effects of isotretinoin is not affected by such combination.
