Psychiatric disorders associated with some chronic dermatologic diseases among a group of Egyptian dermatology outpatient clinic attendants
Conclusion: Patients with chronic dermatologic diseases are at high risk of developing psychological problems which may continue even after improvement of skin disease. The associated psychiatric disorders can range from short episodes of depression to major depression, anxiety, obsessive–compulsive disorders, and sleep disorders and can even extend to suicidal ideation and suicidal attempts. Management of the interaction between the mind and the skin can help to improve patients’ skin conditions and eventually their quality of life. Hair loss among a group of Egyptian children: a clinical and dermoscopic study
Conclusion: Hair loss is a common problem among Egyptian children, wherein tinea capitis showed the highest percentage. The routine use of dermoscopy in scalp and hair disorders improves diagnostic capability beyond simple clinical inspection, thus aiding in accurate diagnosis and better management of alopecia. Emerging treatments for vitiligo: gaining insight from pathogenesis
Vitiligo is an under-recognized, devastating autoimmune skin disease with limited treatment options. There are currently no Food and Drug Administration-approved treatments for vitiligo that reverse the course of disease, and standard off-label treatments are limited in efficacy. Furthermore, the mechanisms of current treatments are largely unknown, although general, nontargeted immunosuppression is most likely. Indeed, lack of significant success in treatment is often the reason for a pessimistic outlook by both the treating physician and the patient, highlighting the need for better treatment options. Over the past three...

Serum thymic stromal lymphopoietin in pediatric atopic patients and its relation to the development of the atopic march
Conclusion: Serum TSLP was not found to be a specific marker of AD or atopic status in general in pediatric patients. It cannot be used as a marker of disease activity or severity, and also cannot be used as a predictive marker for the development of the atopic march. Comparison between serum level of superoxide dismutase, malondialdehyde, and DNA damage in acne vulgaris and vitiligo patients
Background: Free radical-mediated reactions and oxidative stress have been implicated in the pathogenesis of acne, but their role in eliciting this response and contributing to disease progress remains unexplored. Objective: To evaluate the extent of oxidative stress and DNA damage in patients with acne vulgaris in comparison with patients with vitiligo, a disease with a well-known and documented role of oxidative stress in its pathogenesis. Patients and methods: Serum from 15 patients with acne vulgaris, 15 patients with vitiligo, and 15 age-matched and sex-matched controls were evaluated for serum levels of superoxide ...

Autologous adipose-derived adult stem cells injection versus platelet-rich plasma injection in the treatment of rolling postacne scars
Conclusion: Both AT-ASCs and PRP are safe, effective, and tolerable methods for the treatment of rolling acne scars without serious complications. PRP was found to be superior to AT-ASCs. Optimization of the results may be achieved by combining AT-ASCs and PRP in the same session. (Source: Journal of the Egyptian Women’s Dermatologic Society)

Gene expression of FOXP3 and TGF-β1 in the blood of patients with mycosis fungoides, a hospital-based case–control study
Background: Regulatory T cells (Tregs) are FOXP3+ subpopulation of CD4+ T cells with transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1-mediated immunosuppressive effects. They play a role in the etiopathogenesis of various malignancies including cutaneous T-cell lymphomas. Objectives: To study the gene expression of FOXP3 and TGF-β1 in the blood of mycosis fungoides (MF) patients compared with controls. Patients and methods: Venous blood of 5 ml was taken from 25 MF patients and 25 healthy volunteers. Samples were subjected to real-time PCR for the measurement of FOXP3 and TGF-β1 mRNA expression. Results: Although FOXP3 mRNA level...

The angiotensin-converting enzyme insertion/deletion polymorphism of vitiligo in a population in upper Egypt: a hospital-based study
Background: Vitiligo is an acquired depigmentary disorder resulting from the loss of functional melanocytes and melanin from the skin. The causes of the nonfunctional effects on melanocytes remain unclear. There is considerable evidence that genes play a significant role in the pathogenesis of vitiligo. A few genes have been reported to contribute toward susceptibility to vitiligo. One of these is the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) gene. Objective: To investigate the distribution of the ACE genotype in vitiligo patients in upper Egypt to examine whether the insertion (I) and deletion (D) of the ACE polymorphism confe...
