Hidradenocarcinomas mimicking mycetoma
Malignant eccrine tumors are a group of extremely rare and aggressive dermatoses. In this case report, we present a 65-year-old woman who developed a unilateral multinodular swelling on the ankle of 4 months duration. The biopsy result was a histological surprise and revealed characters consistent with hidradenocarcinoma which is a rare rapidly metastasizing tumor of eccrine glands. Straight-erected hair in hepatitis C male patients treated with pegylated interferon and ribavirin
This was a observational analysis using the data retrieved from Egypt’s National Hepatology and Tropical Medicine Research Institute. The evaluations included 500 hepatitis C virus patients on antiviral therapy (INF and ribavirin) who were collected randomly to be evaluated for their hair changes that occur during different stages of treatment from the first week of treatment till the 48th week of their antiviral therapy course. Out of 500 participants, we found hair changes in 17.3% in the form of straight, erect hair in 3% and other hair problems like diffuse hair loss in 13.4% and alopecia areata in 0.8%. Finally, we ...

Association between VNN1 gene polymorphism and the risk for psoriasis
Conclusion Although the VNN1 was overexpressed in patients, it is unlikely that this overexpression is a consequence of the studied polymorphism. The high level of VNN1 may contribute to the development of psoriasis. (Source: Journal of the Egyptian Women’s Dermatologic Society)

Evaluation of platelet-rich plasma in treatment of alopecia areata: a placebo-controlled study
Conclusion PRP treatment for AA is effective, safe, and easy to perform, improving the patients’ DQOL with minimal tolerable side effects. PRP treatment for AA is effective in mild cases of AA. The efficacy of PRP is mostly not caused by needling, as the saline injection showed less significant improvement. However, further studies are needed to identify the precise dosing and the frequency of sessions needed with prolonged follow-up. (Source: Journal of the Egyptian Women’s Dermatologic Society)

Adiponectin and tumor necrosis factor α in psoriasis and their relation to the metabolic syndrome
Conclusion Serum levels of adiponectin and TNF-α are higher in patients with psoriasis in comparison with controls, and their levels decrease with psoriasis treatment. Serum levels of adiponectin are lower in patients with psoriasis with MS in comparison with those without, whereas TNF-α levels are higher in patients with MS when compared with those without. Mean platelet volume: an immanent predictor of subclinical atherosclerosis in psoriatic patients compared with interleukin-1α and interleukin-6
Background Mean platelet volume (MPV), may help to determine atherosclerosis threat. Cardiovascular disease is one of the common causes of morbidity and mortality in patients having psoriasis. Objective To examine MPV as a biomarker for subclinical atherosclerosis in psoriasis patients, compared with interleukin (IL)-1α, IL-6, and carotid intima media thickness (CIMT). Patients and methods Psoriatic patients (n=70) and age-matched and sex-matched healthy controls (n=60) were enrolled. Psoriasis Area and Severity Index score was used to assess psoriasis severity. For all enrolled participants; evaluation of MPV, IL...

Comparative study between ablative carbon dioxide and long-pulsed Nd: YAG laser in treatment of recalcitrant warts
Conclusion CO2 laser carries the advantages of being safe, with few sessions, but with more time for healing, hazards of fumes to the patients and practioners, and high recurrence rate. Nd:YAG laser requires multiple treatment sessions, but has rapid healing, low recurrence rate and fewer complications. (Source: Journal of the Egyptian Women’s Dermatologic Society)

Estimation of the tissue level of angiogenin in plaque-stage mycosis fungoides versus chronic plaque psoriasis
Conclusion ANG might have a role in disease progression in cases of MF; however, it is not the main angiogenic factor in psoriasis. (Source: Journal of the Egyptian Women’s Dermatologic Society)

High-sensitivity C-reactive protein/adiponectin ratio and risk factors of atherosclerosis in patients with lichen planus
Conclusion Patients with LP have an increased risk of metabolic syndrome, atherosclerosis, and cardiovascular disorders. Hs-CRP/adiponectin ratio is a good predicator for the assessment of risks of atherosclerosis in patients with LP. (Source: Journal of the Egyptian Women’s Dermatologic Society)

Personalized medicine in dermatological practice: the present and the future
Personalized medicine deals with providing the right drug, at the right dosage, to the right patient, at the right time. It provides a tailored management of a precise individual. This approach has been used in dermatology for decades. The available scientific literature has been reviewed in a trial to summarize the applications of personalized medicine in dermatological practice. Rituximab-induced serum sickness in pemphigus vulgaris
Rituximab is a B-cell depleting monoclonal antibody. Its use in autoimmune blistering disorders has gained popularity in the past few years. Its off-label use in severe and recalcitrant pemphigus vulgaris has been proved beneficial. Serum sickness is a type-III hypersensitivity reaction that could be seen after administration of biological immunotherapy like rituximab. It is seen 10–14 days after the 1st exposure and clinically presents as fever, maculopapular rash, and arthralgia. Serum sickness with rituximab has not been reported frequently in pemphigus vulgaris patients. Hence, we report a case of rituximab-induced s...

Correlations among insulin-like growth factor-1, homocysteine, vitamin B12, and folic acid plasma levels following isotretinoin therapy in acne vulgaris patients
Conclusion Isotretinoin-treated patients should be monitored closely for plasma IGF-1, Hcy, folic acid, and vitamin B12. Isotretinoin may act through a decrease in the IGF-1 plasma level. Younger patients might be at a higher risk of developing vitamin B12 deficiency and older patients might be at risk of IGF-1 deficiency following isotretinoin therapy. Hyperhomocysteinemia and IGF-1 deficiency seem to be caused by the direct effects of isotretinoin on liver function, unrelated to vitamin B12 and folic acid serum levels. Immunohistochemical study of galectin-3 expression in basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, seborrheic keratosis and keratoacanthoma
Conclusion The marked decrease in nuclear galectin-3 expression suggests that decreased nuclear galectin-3 expression in tumors is an important factor in the progression from normal to tumor states. So, we speculate that nuclear galectin-3 expression may be one of the factors that contribute to tumor behavior in cutaneous BCC. (Source: Journal of the Egyptian Women’s Dermatologic Society)
