Effect of narrowband ultraviolet B phototherapy on serum vitamin D levels in patients with vitiligo
Background: Low vitamin D status has been associated with vitiligo. Narrowband ultraviolet B (NB-UVB) therapy has improved vitamin D balance in psoriasis and atopic dermatitis; however, few data are available on such effect in vitiligo and the relationship of vitamin D levels with disease severity and repigmentation. Objective: To investigate the influence of NB-UVB phototherapy on vitamin D status in vitiligo patients. Patients and methods: The serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D were assessed in 28 vitiligo patients before and after exposure to 24 sessions of NB-UVB treatment. Baseline vitamin D levels of patients were...

Platelet-rich plasma microneedling versus 5% topical minoxidil in the treatment of patterned hair loss
Conclusion: Topical minoxidil remains the first-line of treatment for patients with PHL, given its efficacy, tolerability, and relatively low cost. Platelet-rich plasma with microneedling could be considered an effective second-line therapy for intolerant or unfit patients for minoxidil. Evaluation of serum interleukin-12 and interferon-γ in patients with multiple warts treated with intralesional tuberculin injection
Conclusion: Serum IL-12 and IFN-γ levels were higher in patients with multiple warts than in controls and were not increased after PPD tuberculin injection. It is supposed that these cytokines reached their maximum level. Also, IFN-γ receptor deficiency may be the cause of treatment resistance with elevated cytokines. A novel technique for the treatment of multiple trichoepitheliomas using a high-intensity diode laser
Background: Nonsurgical approaches have been introduced for the treatment of trichoepitheliomas, including erbium-YAG and CO2 lasers. Diode lasers have been used for the treatment of skin tumors such as hemangiomas and neurofibromas. Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of a diode laser for the treatment of trichoepitheliomas. Patients and methods: Eleven patients with multiple trichoepitheliomas were treated with a continuous wave diode laser (980 nm) at a power of 5 W. Sessions were performed biweekly for a maximum of six sessions. Assessments of the patients’ lesions by count and size regression were perfo...

Study of immunohistochemical expression of cytokeratin 17 in basal cell carcinoma
Conclusion: The pattern of CK 17 expression provided an additional evidence to the suggestion that the tumorous differentiation in BCC is toward follicular outer root sheath cells and glandular components of the pilosebaceous-apocrine unit. Moreover, the intensity of CK 17 expression may not necessarily correlate with the more aggressive behavior generally associated with the morpheaform BCC variant. CK 17 is a useful marker in the identification and outlining of BCC. (Source: Journal of the Egyptian Women’s Dermatologic Society)

Prevalence and pattern of acne vulgaris among adolescents in Ibadan, south-west Nigeria
Background: Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that commonly affects adolescents. Its prevalence varies widely, with higher figures reported from the developed countries. Recent reports suggest that there might be an increase in prevalence in the developing world. Objective: To determine the current prevalence, pattern, and risk factors for acne vulgaris among school adolescents in Nigeria. Patients and methods: A total of 464 adolescents were recruited from four (two private and two public) secondary schools in Ibadan, Nigeria, between September and November 2011. The students were interviewed with the...

What is new in phototherapy?
Phototherapy is a unique tool in the hands of dermatologists that has proved its efficacy, excellent safety profile, and cost-effectiveness along the decades. In this respect, it still stands its ground regardless of the development of newer medications in this rapidly evolving field. Furthermore, it remains a focus of attraction among scientists who will never cease in their attempts to obtain a clearer understanding of its mechanisms of action. Newer protocols aiming for higher efficacy, faster results, and wider safety margin will continue to be suggested and evaluated. In the coming review we will highlight ‘what is ...

The role of insulin-like growth factor-II mRNA-binding protein 3, cyclooxygenase-2, and galectin-3 in differentiating malignant melanoma from benign melanocytic lesion: immunohistochemical study
Conclusion: These findings indicate that the combined use of both IMP-3 and galectin-3 has a diagnostic value in segregating nevi from malignant melanoma. (Source: Journal of the Egyptian Women’s Dermatologic Society)

Visual and auditory abnormalities in patients with nonsegmental vitiligo
Conclusion: In nonsegmental vitiligo patients, population of higher skin types of various extent and both sexes, impairment of pigment cells in the visual apparatus could not be detected, whereas auditory abnormalities were detected through audiometry in 13.3%. It is therefore important in those patients to guard against further otological damage, by avoidance of high noise jobs or ototoxic drugs and by considering routine audiometric check-ups. Evaluation of serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor to assess the association between psoriasis and depression
Background: Psoriasis patients usually experience problems pertaining to body image, low self-esteem, anxiety, and depression. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) has been used as a marker of depression. Objective: To assess the association between depression and psoriasis objectively by analysis of serum BDNF levels. Patients and methods: Ninety participants were divided into three equal groups: the psoriasis group, the depression group, and the healthy control group. The psoriasis area severity index was assessed in psoriatic patients. The 30 patients with depression were diagnosed according to the Diagnostic and st...
