Evx1 and Evx2 specify excitatory neurotransmitter fates and suppress inhibitory fates through a Pax2-independent mechanism
Conclusions: Evx1 and Evx2 are required, partially redundantly, for spinal cord V0v cells to become excitatory (glutamatergic) interneurons. These results significantly increase our understanding of the mechanisms of neuronal specification and the genetic networks involved in these processes. shRNA target prediction informed by comprehensive enquiry (SPICE): a supporting system for high-throughput screening of shRNA library
RNA interference (RNAi) screening is extensively used in the field of reverse genetics. RNAi libraries constructed using random oligonucleotides have made this technology affordable. However, the new methodology requires exploration of the RNAi target gene information after screening because the RNAi library includes non-natural sequences that are not found in genes. Here, we developed a web-based tool to support RNAi screening. The system performs short hairpin RNA (shRNA) target prediction that is informed by comprehensive enquiry (SPICE). SPICE automates several tasks that are laborious but indispensable to evaluate the...

Prognostic value of the bone scan index using a computer-aided diagnosis system for bone scans in hormone-naive prostate cancer patients with bone metastases
Conclusions: The pretreatment BSI and patients’ age are independent prognostic factors for patients with hormone-naive, bone metastatic prostate cancer. (Source: Epidemiologic Perspectives and Innovations)

Endothelial progenitor cells and burn injury – exploring the relationship
Burn wounds result in varying degrees of soft tissue damage that are typically graded clinically. Recently a key participant in neovascularization, the endothelial progenitor cell, has been the subject of intense cardiovascular research to explore whether it can serve as a biomarker for vascular injury. In this review, we examine the identity of the endothelial progenitor cell as well as the evidence that support its role as a key responder after burn insult. While there is conflicting evidence with regards to the delta of endothelial progenitor cell mobilization and burn severity, it is clear that they play an important r...

Expanding the primary health care workforce through contracting with nongovernmental entities: the cases of Bahia and Rio de Janeiro
Conclusions: Both cases highlight that improvements in cost and performance data will be critical for meaningful comparative evaluation of delivery arrangements in primary care. Despite the different institutional and implementation arrangements of each model, which make comparison difficult, the analysis provides important lessons for contracting out health professionals for PHC within Brazil and elsewhere. The effects of low-intensity narrow-band blue-light treatment compared to bright white-light treatment in sub-syndromal seasonal affective disorder
Conclusion: Light treatment is an effective treatment for Sub-SAD. The use of narrow-band blue-light treatment is equally effective as bright white-light treatment.Trial registrationThis study was registered in the Dutch Trial Register (Nederlands Trial Register TC = 4342) (20-12-2013). Absence of low back pain to demarcate an episode: a prospective multicentre study in primary care
Conclusion: Prevalence of four consecutive pain free weeks is found in the majority of subjects in this population logically reflects duration of LBP within the sample and may be applied on patients in primary care to demarcate a LBP episode. (Source: Epidemiologic Perspectives and Innovations)

Canine Trichomonas tenax mandibular gland infestation
Conclusions: Studies have shown that T. tenax can be found in humans in atypical locations such as the salivary glands and upper and lower respiratory tracts. According to our knowledge this is the first report of T. tenax being present in the salivary glands of a dog. Because of the relatively high prevalence of trichomoniasis in dogs with periodontal diseases, these parasites should be considered together with bacterial and viral agents in salivary gland infections, especially in individuals with compromised oral health. Age- and gender-specific incidence rates of renal replacement therapy in Japan: an international comparison
Conclusions: Japan has a higher incidence of RRT among middle- and older-aged populations compared to the total incidence rates of ESKD in Australia. This higher incidence in Japan cannot be explained by differences in the acceptance rate for RRT since data from Australia included both treated and untreated ESKD. A strategy that targets middle- and older-aged males will be necessary to decrease the incidence of RRT in Japan. (Source: Epidemiologic Perspectives and Innovations)

Breast cancer literacy among higher secondary students: results from a cross-sectional study in Western Nepal
Conclusion: Our study demonstrates poor knowledge on breast cancer risk factors, symptoms and curability among higher secondary school students in Western Nepal. Still, several myths regarding breast cancer persist. Half of the students had the perception that school curriculum inadequately informed them on breast cancer. Future studies should aim at the measures necessary to address the inadequate knowledge, along with the perceived gap in school curriculum. (Source: Epidemiologic Perspectives and Innovations)
