The expression and prognostic value of protein tyrosine kinase 6 in early-stage cervical squamous cell cancer.
CONCLUSIONS: PTK6 is overexpressed in cervical squamous cell cancer. Increased PTK6 expression is associated with reduced 5-year overall survival. PTK6 expression is an independent prognostic predictor for cervical cancer. PMID: 27311570 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Chinese Journal of Cancer)

Attenuated LKB1-SIK1 signaling promotes epithelial-mesenchymal transition and radioresistance of non-small cell lung cancer cells.
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that attenuated LKB1-SIK1 signaling promotes EMT and radioresistance of NSCLC cells, which subsequently contributes to the enhanced metastatic potential. Targeting the LKB1-SIK1-ZEB1 pathway to suppress EMT might provide therapeutic benefits. PMID: 27266881 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Chinese Journal of Cancer)

Whole exome sequencing and single nucleotide polymorphism array analyses to identify germline alterations in genes associated with testosterone metabolism in a patient with androgen insensitivity syndrome and early-onset colorectal cancer.
CONCLUSIONS: By pathway analysis, all inherited germline genetic events were connected in a unique network whose alteration in the proband, together with continuous testosterone stimulation, may have played a role in CRC pathogenesis. The Philadelphia chromosome in leukemogenesis.
Authors: Kang ZJ, Liu YF, Xu LZ, Long ZJ, Huang D, Yang Y, Liu B, Feng JX, Pan YJ, Yan JS, Liu Q Abstract The truncated chromosome 22 that results from the reciprocal translocation t(9;22)(q34;q11) is known as the Philadelphia chromosome (Ph) and is a hallmark of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). In leukemia cells, Ph not only impairs the physiological signaling pathways but also disrupts genomic stability. This aberrant fusion gene encodes the breakpoint cluster region-proto-oncogene tyrosine-protein kinase (BCR-ABL1) oncogenic protein with persistently enhanced tyrosine kinase activity. The kinase activity...

Emerging molecular classifications and therapeutic implications for gastric cancer.
Authors: Chen T, Xu XY, Zhou PH Abstract Gastric cancer (GC) is a highly aggressive and life-threatening malignancy. Even with radical surgical removal and front-line chemotherapy, more than half of GCs locally relapse and metastasize at a distant site. The dismal outcomes reflect the ineffectiveness of a one-size-fits-all approach for a highly heterogeneous disease with diverse etiological causes and complex molecular underpinnings. The recent comprehensive genomic and molecular profiling has led to our deepened understanding of GC. The emerging molecular classification schemes based on the genetic, epige...

Hippo/YAP signaling pathway is involved in osteosarcoma chemoresistance.
CONCLUSIONS: The Hippo/YAP signaling pathway plays a role in osteosarcoma chemoresistance, and YAP is a potential target for reducing chemoresistance. PMID: 27206784 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Chinese Journal of Cancer)

Low WT1 transcript levels at diagnosis predicted poor outcomes of acute myeloid leukemia patients with t(8;21) who received chemotherapy or allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.
CONCLUSIONS: Testing for WT1 transcript levels at diagnosis in patients with AML and t(8;21) may predict outcomes in those who achieve remission. A randomized study is warranted to determine whether allo-HSCT can improve prognosis in these patients. PMID: 27197573 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Chinese Journal of Cancer)

Radiotherapy for gynecologic cancer in nonagenarian patients: a framework for new paradigms.
Authors: Méry B, Ndong SM, Guy JB, Assouline A, Falk AT, Valeille A, Trone JC, Rivoirard R, Auberdiac P, Vallard A, Espenel S, Moriceau G, Collard O, Bosacki C, Jacquin JP, de Laroche G, Fournel P, Chargari C, Magné N Abstract No consensus exists regarding the role of radiotherapy in the management of gynecologic cancer in nonagenarian patients. We retrospectively reviewed the outcomes of 19 consecutive nonagenarian patients with gynecologic cancer (6 endometrial cancers, 6 cervical cancers, 4 vulvar cancers, and 3 vaginal cancers) who were treated with radiotherapy. Radiotherapy was performed mainly in ...

Does adding intraperitoneal paclitaxel to standard intraperitoneal regimen yield incremental survival? A propensity score-matched cohort study.
Authors: Chang YH, Lu CH, Yen MS, Lee WH, Chang Y, Chang WP, Chuang CM Abstract We recruited consecutive patients with stage III epithelial ovarian, tubal, and peritoneal cancers who had optimal residual tumor after primary cytoreductive surgery and who received intraperitoneal chemotherapy between 2002 and 2012. Two propensity score-matched sample cohorts were created. We found that the addition of paclitaxel as a second intraperitoneal agent on a 3-week dosing schedule did not yield significant incremental survival benefits over the intraperitoneal delivery of a single cisplatin-based regimen. If our fin...

Genomic alterations and molecular subtypes of gastric cancers in Asians.
Authors: Ye XS, Yu C, Aggarwal A, Reinhard C Abstract Gastric cancer (GC) is a highly heterogenic disease, and it is the second leading cause of cancer death in the world. Common chemotherapies are not very effective for GC, which often presents as an advanced or metastatic disease at diagnosis. Treatment options are limited, and the prognosis for advanced GCs is poor. The landscape of genomic alterations in GCs has recently been characterized by several international cancer genome programs, including studies that focused exclusively on GCs in Asians. These studies identified major recurrent driver mutatio...

Pediatric spinal glioblastoma of the conus medullaris: a case report of long survival.
We report a case of a 4-year-old child diagnosed with an isolated glioblastoma multiforme of the conus medullaris. The patient underwent subtotal surgical excision, followed by adjuvant radiotherapy and oral chemotherapy. He is alive with mild neurologic deficits at 52 months after diagnosis. We describe the peculiar characteristics of this rare condition in pediatric oncology. We also provide an overview of current multidisciplinary therapeutic approaches and prognostic factors for this disease. PMID: 27160742 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Chinese Journal of Cancer)

A new prognostic histopathologic classification of nasopharyngeal carcinoma.
CONCLUSIONS: The proposed classification offers more information for the prediction of NPC prognosis compared with the WHO classification and might be a valuable tool to guide treatment decisions for subtypes that are associated with a poor prognosis. Hormonal therapy might be a better choice as maintenance treatment than capecitabine after response to first-line capecitabine-based combination chemotherapy for patients with hormone receptor-positive and HER2-negative, metastatic breast cancer.
CONCLUSION: For HR-positive and HER2-negative MBC patients, HT might be considered a treatment after response to FCCT but prior to MCT as a long-term administration. PMID: 27112139 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Chinese Journal of Cancer)

A multicenter, retrospective epidemiologic survey of the clinical features and management of bone metastatic disease in China.
CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggested that prompt and persistent BP treatment was associated with a reduced risk of SREs. However, our survey also revealed that the proper application of BP was not as common as expected in China. PMID: 27112196 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Chinese Journal of Cancer)
