Biology and management of myeloma-related bone disease
Publication date: April–June 2014 Source:Acta Haematologica Polonica, Volume 45, Issue 2 Author(s): Evangelos Terpos , Nikolaos Kanellias , Krzysztof Giannopoulos Bone disease is one of the most common complications of multiple myeloma. It is the result of increased osteoclast activity which is not compensated by osteoblast activity and leads to osteolytic lesions characterized by bone pain and increased risk for pathological fracture, spinal cord compression and need for radiotherapy or surgery to the bone. Recent studies have revealed novel pathways and molecules that are involved in the biology of myeloma bone ...

New avenues for genetics guided therapeutic approaches in AML
Publication date: Available online 9 May 2014 Source:Acta Haematologica Polonica Author(s): Lars Bullinger The development of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) microarray analysis and next generation sequencing (NGS) has significantly contributed to comprehensively characterize the genetic changes underlying acute myeloid leukemia (AML). These genomics technologies have led to the identification of an increasing number of genomic aberrations and gene mutations that cause epigenetic changes and lead to deregulated gene expression. In accordance, AML patients present with a distinct and almost individual combination ...

Rola monocytów w patogenezie przewlekłej białaczki limfocytowej
Publication date: Available online 20 June 2014 Source:Acta Haematologica Polonica Author(s): Izabela Łapuć , Andrzej Eljaszewicz , Janusz Kłoczko , Marcin Moniuszko Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is one of the most common leukemias in adults. CLL is characterized by numerous immune disorders leading to the development of infections which have become the major cause of death in this group of patients. According to recent reports, many of immune alterations observed in the course of CLL could be attributed to dysfunctions of monocytes/macrophages and other cells of myeloid linage. In this article, we summariz...

Bilateral orbital lymphoma: A diagnostic odyssey through surreal clinical and imaging features plus therapeutic implications
Publication date: July–September 2014 Source:Acta Haematologica Polonica, Volume 45, Issue 3 Author(s): Andrei Lebovici , Maria M. Duma , Lavinia M. Lenghel , Laura Urian , Bogdan Fetica , Silviu A. Sfrangeu The paper aim was to present a case of bilateral, advanced, orbital lymphoma diagnosed in a middle aged man who was admitted in a clinical condition which almost defied reality. The entire orbito-facial region was replaced by massive ulcero-necrotic masses which completely distorted the normal anatomy, giving an alien-like resemblance of an otherwise ordinary man. The patient was submitted to several imagin...

Hyaline vascular Castleman's disease (HVCD) mimicking lung metastasis of renal carcinoma: A case report and literature review
Publication date: July–September 2014 Source:Acta Haematologica Polonica, Volume 45, Issue 3 Author(s): Ai-Ying Qin , Xiu-Bao Ren , Shui Cao Castleman's disease (CD) is a rare lymphoproliferative disorder characterized by atypical lymph node follicular hyperplasia. Subsequential occurrence of CD and cancers has been rarely reported and interpretations of the relationship are contentious. An asymptomatic 70-year-old man was found to have a left-sided hilar mass during routine follow-up after a radical right nephrectomy for clear cell carcinoma, raising suspicions of lung metastasis. Because there was no sign of rec...

Wysokie dawki cyklofosfamidu po niemieloablacyjnym haploidentycznym przeszczepieniu komórek krwiotwórczych u dziecka z nawrotową postacią nerwiaka zarodkowego: krok w kierunku rozdzielenia reakcji GVT i GVH
The objective of this report is an analysis of case of a child treated for relapsed neuroblastoma with haploidentical HSCT with PTCy. In this case following therapeutic modalities were combined: haploidentical HSCT in pediatric solid tumor relapsing after autologous HSCT, non-myeloablative haploidentical HSCT with unmanipulated T-repleted graft, and post-transplant use of high-dose cyclophosphamide as GVHD prophylaxis. This strategy was safe and efficient, as we observed low toxicity, relatively fast hematological engraftment, and hyperacute GVHD followed by mild GVHD. Patient stayed in remission for 12 months. Based on pu...

Mobilization of hematopoietic stem cells in patients undergoing HSCT as a treatment of early diabetes type 1
Conclusion The mobilization of hematopoietic stem cells with CY+G-CSF in patients with early diabetes type 1 is efficient and the underlying diabetes does not impair the efficiency of hematopoietic stem cell collection. (Source: Acta Haematologica Polonica)

Oral mucositis in patients with leukaemia following high-dose chemotherapy and autologous haematopoietic stem cells transplantation
Publication date: July–September 2014 Source:Acta Haematologica Polonica, Volume 45, Issue 3 Author(s): Jolanta Wojciechowicz , Magdalena Kostyra , Justyna Kozińska , Marek Hus , Tomasz Tomaszewski Historically, oral mucositis (OM) has been identified as a symptom developing in patients undergoing irradiation due to head and neck cancers, those undergoing therapy in preparation for a stem cell transplant, or receiving special therapeutic protocols due to acute myeloid leukaemia. It results from direct toxic injury to the mucosal epithelial cells by the immunosuppressive regimen. In this article we want to descr...

Znaczenie bortezomibu w leczeniu szpiczaka plazmocytowego u pacjentów z ryzykiem cytogenetycznym
Publication date: July–September 2014 Source:Acta Haematologica Polonica, Volume 45, Issue 3 Author(s): Krzysztof Jamroziak , Ewa Wawrzyniak , Elżbieta Iskierka A remarkable progress, which has been made during the last two decades in the multiple myeloma (MM) treatment, is mainly associated with the introduction to MM therapy three new drugs – thalidomide, lenalidomide and bortezomib. Global improvement of prognosis in MM, confirmed by numerous clinical trials and epidemiological studies, is mainly a consequence of very favorable results obtained in patients in the standard-risk group. However, in patients aff...

Nowe strategie leczenia zespołów mielodysplastycznych wysokiego ryzyka
Publication date: July–September 2014 Source:Acta Haematologica Polonica, Volume 45, Issue 3 Author(s): Klaudia Grądzka , Janusz Kłoczko Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDSs) are a heterogeneous group of clonal hematopoietic disorders. The only treatment leading to a recovery of patients with MDS is allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). However, a large proportion of patients is not eligible for allo-HSCT due to an advanced age, presence of comorbidities and a lack of donors. Other treatment options include application of hypomethylating agents or intensive chemotherapy. It has been proven th...

Minimalna choroba resztkowa w ostrych białaczkach u dzieci i dorosłych
Publication date: Available online 30 July 2014 Source:Acta Haematologica Polonica Author(s): Ewelina Pukownik , Lidia Gil , Jan Styczyński Biological and genetic heterogeneity of acute leukemias is a major cause of therapeutic difficulties. Response to chemotherapy is one of the most important prognostic factors in this group of diseases. In acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), and progressively more in acute myeloid leukemia (AML), the best parameter of that response is the presence of minimal residual disease (MRD). MRD monitoring is performed based on the flow cytometer analysis of leukemic immunophenotypes or d...
