Diagnostyka i leczenie postępującej wieloogniskowej leukoencefalopatii
Publication date: Available online 25 February 2015 Source:Acta Haematologica Polonica Author(s): Monika Kulma-Kreft , Krzysztof Leśniewski-Kmak , Jan Maciej Zaucha Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is a rare but a very serious complication associated inter alia with the use of new biological and immunomodulatory agents that cause long-lasting immunosuppression. This also applies to rituximab, commonly used for treatment of B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) patients. PML may develop during, as well as after, completion of treatment with rituximab. Diagnosis of PML is not easy and poses a significant ...

Pierwotny chłoniak ośrodkowego układu nerwowego u pacjentów immunokompetentnych
Publication date: Available online 13 February 2015 Source:Acta Haematologica Polonica Author(s): Edyta Ponikowska-Szyba Primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) is a rare malignancy, exclusively arising in central nervous system (CNS) and in the intraocular compartment, accounting for 4% of all intracranial tumors. Recently, the incidence of PCNSL is progressively increasing in immunocompetent patients and in the elderly age group. CNS involvement and diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) histology in 95% of cases are responsible for an aggressive clinical course of this malignancy. Particular microenvironment...

Delayed recovery of kidney function in a multiple myeloma patient treated with high cut-off hemodialysis: A case report
We present a case of a 68-year-old woman with dialysis dependent acute kidney injury secondary to multiple myeloma. The treatment consisted of plasma exchange, 10 sessions of high-cut-off hemodialysis and induction chemotherapy. Free light chain concentration (FLC) was reduced from 1900mg/l to 584mg/l (a 70% reduction). Recovery of kidney function was observed 3 months after hospital admission and discontinuation of dialysis was possible. The case is quite unusual because of the delay in renal recovery. Clinical aspects of prophylaxis and treatment of CNS disease in lymphoma patients
Publication date: Available online 5 December 2014 Source:Acta Haematologica Polonica Author(s): Małgorzata Krawczyk-Kuliś , Sławomira Kyrcz-Krzemień Currently, infiltration of the central nervous system (CNS) in lymphoma patients is an unfavorable prognostic factor contributing to shorter survival. In these cases, immunophenotypisation has become important for evaluation of cerebrospinal fluid cells – especially in the so-called “subclinical form of CNS involvement.” Other methods used in these cases include diagnostic imaging and cytological examination. Therapy protocols, including the prophylactic intra...

The outcome of primary mediastinal B-cell lymphoma in a single center experience
Conclusions The vast majority of PMBCL patients are susceptible to immunochemotherapy with a high response rate achieved after R-DA-EPOCH/R-CHOP regimens. AHSCT seems to be an option for fit patients with disease chemosensitivity. (Source: Acta Haematologica Polonica)

Publication date: Available online 31 December 2014 Source:Acta Haematologica Polonica Author(s): Agnieszka Pluta , Anna Krawczyńska , Agnieszka Wierzbowska Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) according to WHO definition are a group of myeloid neoplasms characterized by peripheral blood cytopenias and increased risk of leukemic transformation. An accurate diagnostic procedure and risk assessment are necessary for choosing an optimal treatment option. The aim of this article is performance of MDS diagnostic standards according to European LeukemiaNet. MDS diagnosis should be based on WHO 2008 criteria with International...

Profilaktyka zakażeń grzybiczych u dzieci poddawanych transplantacjom komórek hematopoetycznych
Publication date: Available online 13 November 2014 Source:Acta Haematologica Polonica Author(s): Krzysztof Kałwak Invasive fungal infections (IFI) remain a very important cause of morbidity and mortality after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) in children. The recent study from Polish pediatric transplant centers revealed that 27.3% of children transplanted in 2012–2013 developed IFI. The highest risk was observed among patients with AML and ALL after allogeneic HSCT. Such results warrant the use of extensive antifungal prophylaxis in this cohort of patients. ECIL-4 guidelines for antifungal prophylax...

Assessment of lineage-specific chimerism after allogeneic stem cell transplantation
Conclusions Lineage specific chimerism as a method of high sensitivity and specificity allows for precise assessment of donor chimerism especially in clinically ambiguous situations. Assessment of erythrocyte chimerism by flow cytometry is a reliable method of monitoring erythroblastic line engraftment. Presented results are preliminary and the study is being continued. Functions of the Ikaros transcription factor and the role of IKZF1 gene defects in hematological malignancies
Publication date: Available online 27 October 2014 Source:Acta Haematologica Polonica Author(s): Anna Gorzkiewicz , Anna Walczewska Discovered in the early 1990s, highly conserved DNA- and protein-binding transcription factor, Ikaros, is now considered as one of the most important players in hematopoiesis and the development of certain forms of human malignancies. The Ikaros transcription factor is a multifunctional protein regulating hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) function, coordinating self-renewal, cell survival processes, cell cycle progression and lymphopoiesis. Ikaros is also considered as one of the most impo...
