VP3: Qash
After walking through the four sub-villages of Qash and proving our ability by answering endless questions and bagging corn for harvest, we were in high spirits and excited for our testing day which was the following day. We woke up at 7:30 with much excitement (and caffeine coursing through our veins). Fueled by an all-star breakfast of chapatti and American creamy peanut butter (kitamu-delicious) we were ready to go! Our plan of action, which was discussed the previous day, came to life at 10:30 when we greeted the SIC trucks at the Qash Central soccer fields (that double as a pasture goats, sheep, and cows). Quic...

VP3: Majengo
Time really flies here. The seemingly distant testing day that we were constantly reminding of came and went without any pause. In Majengo, we spent the days preceding it putting up flyers on trees and buildings with tape and a homemade paste (made of flour and water), and going from house to house, answering questions and advertising the testing. “Bure, Siri, Haraka, na Salama” (Free, Confidential, Fast, and Safe) was our go-to phrase. Most everyone we talked to seemed ready, responsive, and even excited. This was probably due more to the soccer game, between Majengo and the neighboring Tsamasi, than testing itself. B...

VP3 Endadosh gears up for testing day
Mambo! The volunteers here in Endadosh have been busy preparing for our testing day that will take place tomorrow! We have been teaching in the primary school, hanging up posters throughout the village, and educating as many community members as possible up until now. We are excited to see the results of our efforts tomorrow! A snapshot of our life here in Endadosh: 8am   Roll out of bed/untangle ourselves from our mosquito nets 8:30  Carbo-load for the day (who knew pasta or French fries could be breakfast foods!) 9am   Set out on the day’s journey. We walk along the roads of Endadosh, in hopes of hitching a ride fr...

SIC UK Rows The English Channel
Cross Channel Rowing Challenge 2013 in aid of SIC UK   Earlier this year, a team of rowers took on the challenge of rowing across the English Channel, all 21 miles of it, in a one tonne adventure rowing boat.  After several months of some pretty gruelling training sessions (including a 4 hour session in howling wind and rain on the Solent – character building apparently), we were ready and prepared to take on The Channel.   Team members included SIC UK’s newly appointed Extreme Sports Captain, Sophie Robinson, who was raising money for SIC, alongside 7 rowers from Stratford-Upon-Avon Rowing Club.   5:4...

VP2: Engejisosia
Mambo vipi (what’s up?), gang! Dichaba, Nancy, Ryan, Chloe & Swizan here with another great week in Engejisosia. Even though we only have one week left in the kijij*, we still find ourselves experiencing so many new things. Last Sunday, Dichaba, Ryan, and Swizan attended an unusual church service in which a member of the congregation was spiritually awakened. It’s a great story, so definitely ask us about it later! Our village football team had a special ceremony later that day to celebrate their successful season. Obviously, with Swizan on the team, how were they going to lose? Most of the community came out t...

VP2: Kolila
Kwanto (a Kimeru—tribal language—greeting)! This is one of our last weeks in Kolila: we can count the days we have left on our fingers! Kolila is a village comprised of fields and fields of sunflowers. The houses are very spread out, which makes walking an exercise in cardio every day! There are 6 of us in this team: Charlotte, Julie, Haley and Meghan are Western volunteers and Innocent and Gerald are our wonderful Teaching Partners. With 4 schools and 10 churches, we have our work cut our for us. However the community has been very welcoming. Our village leader has been away from the village for much of the trip, maki...

VP3: Tsamasi
Mambo vipi (Hey there!) from Saba, Francisca, Laura, and Happy in Tsamasi Village! Our first week here in village has been full of new people, new places, new foods, and new methods of transportation. All of these new experiences have been made much easier by our welcoming and loving homestay families and our great community here in Tsamasi; everyone has been very welcoming and friendly as we pass by during our daily treks up and down the hills that make up our new home. We have spent the past week getting to know our village through village meetings, household and duka (shop) surveys, football matches, and just talking t...

VP3: Orngadida
Feeling refreshed and rejuvenated, we are back in our village, Orngadida, after our week long break. Some of us rafted the Nile, some traveled to Zanzibar, and our teaching partners returned home to their families back in Arusha. Nonetheless, everyone had a great time! Now back in Orngadida, our focus is back on teaching HIV/AIDS prevention in our community. In the first few weeks of village life, we ran teachings on a day-to-day basis, as we formed crucial relationships with village leaders, students, our community soccer team, and, of course, with our mamas and babas (fathers). Although we enjoyed our time relaxing durin...

VP1: Ayamango
Angelo Greetings from Ayamango, Tanzania! As the program is going to end, we are getting through the peaks of our time here- testing days and community day. In the community day and testing days SIC testing teams come in and teat the HIV status of people in the village. Especially in the community day we prepare a series of activities as a way of thanking the Gallapo ward, including a soccer tournament with teams from all the villages in Gallapo ward. The team which wins will receive a goat! To save money, the Ayamango team managed to get a goat for the price of 30,000 tsh. The usual price is 50,000 tsh, and this goat is a...

VP1: Gallapo
Mambo rafiki (Hello, friends)! Gallapo here weighing in on our big Community Day which we held last Saturday. Since we were the most centrally located village in the ward, we were tasked with leading the organization of our VP’s Community Day! We wanted to thank the wonderful people of the Gallapo ward for being so receptive to our presence and teachings. Community Day also serves as a last push for testing. Chatting, Teaching & Advertising Planning Community Day was daunting in the beginning since we had to plan a soccer tournament, organize games for kids, arrange for a DJ, and spread the word around our community ...

A Week King’ori
Greetings from King’Ori village! All of us in King’Ori (Teaching Partners: Maryam & Caroline and Volunteers: Charlotte BP, Vanessa, Olivia & Iszy) send a lot of love home and hope that everyone enjoys hearing about our week. On Saturday we had our first experience teaching at a bar. Iszy and Olivia broke the ice by challenging one of the young men to a game of pool. They promptly lost, but not before both of them had sunk a few balls. Before teaching, Vanessa and Caroline walked around the village recruiting youngsters to listen to what we had to say. We then started our teaching to the group of about ...

VP2–Greetings from Malula!
Hello from Malula! We’ve been in the village a week now, and we’ve managed to accomplish a lot! Malula is a pretty village right off the main road from Arusha to Moshi. You can see Mount Kilimanjaro from here, and there are lots of sunflowers, corn, and animals. After exploring the village and conducting household and condom surveys, we had our first teaching at Manyota Tuition Center. We taught about HIV transmission to 125 students, Forms 1-4 (high school students). Everyone was very excited—our team to dour first teaching, and the students to learn more about HIV. The reaching went really well overall, and the st...

VP2–Nkoansiyo
July 5, 2013 We have enjoyed our first week here in Nkoansiyo! Originally, we were nervous to meet our homestay families; Johnson, our joking Operations Manager, had tricked us into thinking our houses were really far apart and that our village was full of swamps. Luckily, when we finally arrived, we realized that our houses were only three minutes apart, and the village is filled with sunflowers. The so-called “swamps” are actually ponds with water lilies. We also have the most beautiful view of Mount Kilimanjaro! We were all so anxious to meet our families. Philip, also known as Travo, met his family first—his home...

We Are Family
Gedamar B How long does it take for someone to become family? Months? Years? Is it possible to feel inseparable from someone after only a few weeks? Just the other day my Tanzanian teaching partner and I were finishing surveying dukas (shops) in the village to see where condoms were available. I would state our purpose (“Hi, we’re from SIC…) and she would translate. Rather business like work, but important, nonetheless. We found ourselves walking down roads unknown, asking passerbys if we might stumble across a kiosk in the next quarter mile. Eventually I removed my sandals and let my bare feet embrace the re...
