SIC Human vs Shark Swim Sydney, Australia 26/01/2014
On the 26/01/2014 three brave young souls swam 2.2km in the shark infested waters of Sydney harbour to raise money for SIC. Team members included last years Bath Half Marathon runners Matthew Sprague and Francesca Curry. New to the team were Richard Webster (who journeyed from New Zealand for the occasion) and Katie Wimble who took up her role as events photographer. The teams training over the past 6 months involved sunrise swimming at Coogee Beach, acclimatisation training completed in the Blue Mountains lakes as well as a New Zealand training camp held at Waheke island. At all times dusk was avoided, as this is the main...

HIVE Southampton: 6th Form Blog
Over the last term we have had some really successful 6th form teachings at a range of local 6th forms. The 6th form curriculum has been updated to include more about global health and looking  into understanding why someone in a developing country may find it harder to access healthcare then elsewhere. We have also looked further into stigma and how it can affect all aspects of someone’s life. We have visited lots of 6th forms such as King Edwards School and have enjoyed some great debates and discussions there. We have had lots of new teachers come along who have really enjoyed teaching and been a great success! They ...

HIVE Liverpool Marks World AIDS Day 2013 With A Gig Night
Having wisely decided that the annual street collection might be better suited to the warmer months of the year, this year HIVE Liverpool instead decided to mark World AIDS Day with a gig. The events co-ordinators tracked down some fantastic bands and it wasn’t long before the top floor of Hardman Street Baa Bar was rocking to some seriously cool music to raise funds for our HIV projects in Tanzania. First up on stage was Liam Tooney whose mix of acoustic covers and his own songs set a chilled vibe for the evening. Next came La Alma Sucia whose five song acoustic set included a toe-tapping musical mash up of ‘Hit...

HIV awareness week- Southampton
This year, Southampton HIVE’s committee decided to set themselves a challenge of holding an entire week of events in the run up to World AIDS day to fundraise for SIC and increase awareness. After many weeks of preparation, moments of stress and hard work from everyone, wearing our red T-shirts and ribbons we were excited for the week ahead to spread the word! We kicked off the events on Monday 25th November with a teacher training evening to recruit new teachers. All who attended were very enthusiastic and have already been to schools to get involved! With piles of tins and tupperwares full of wonderful red cakes, cook...

VP4- Eat Takes a Village
Living in the village makes me feel like a “Little American.” I know a little Swahili and even less Maasai. In fact, I am still getting praise from my home-stay Mama for my first complete Swahili sentence: “My friends have coffee, but they need hot water.” But, more than anything else, it’s the meals that make me feel small. I get a strong impression that our home-stay family is fattening us up for six weeks before they harvest our swollen, corpulent bodies. For our first meal they brought Kelsey and I each a huge, rounded bowl of beans. I’m a big fan of beans, and I was uncertain what to expect, so I had a lit...

HIVE Liverpool Gets The Lowdown On The Volunteer Programme
At the end of October, SIC UK’s Volunteer Programme Coordinator Victoria Briggs visited HIVE Liverpool to speak to their volunteers and offer insight into the Volunteer Programme in Tanzania from someone who has experienced it first hand.     With eleven interested people coming to the info evening we are hopeful we will be sending some HIVE Liverpool’s volunteers out to Tanzania soon. HIVE Liverpool Teaches at St. Hilda’s CoE High School
HIVE Liverpool Developments Co-ordinator Jankee Patel headed up this school visit by the HIVE team (in partnership with Brook Bitesize). Jankee wrote us this report about the day:   “So the school I taught in was filled with bright young girls eager to learn as much as possible in short sharp 20minute bursts! I taught around 60, 13-14 year olds that showed their keen interest in learning about the new fascinating topic of HIV using the interactive mat. I felt I made a real impact on these girls as they flooded me with questions at the end of their sessions, having shouted out the fluids and door in their loudest...

HIVE Liverpool Gets Quizzical
With an events team brimming with enthusiasm it wasn’t long before HIVE Liverpool got their busy events calendar underway. First up, a pub quiz!   Hannah’s Bar is no stranger to being crowded with students but our events team managed to take it to the next level, packing the room with so many keen quizzers that fitting all the teams in was like a game of furniture Tetris. No doubt these eager punters had heard about the amazing raffle prizes the girls had managed to secure: cinema tickets, haircuts, big wheel tickets, restaurant vouchers and more! The quiz itself included questions on everything from sport and mu...

SIC UK Visits HIVE Branches To Meet The Fantastic New Committees
With new branch committees at HIVE Southampton, Liverpool and Leicester, the SIC UK national committee has been out and about to put faces to names and to help the new committees adjust to their roles. First up was our brand new HIVE branch at Leicester and there we met the enthusiastic Sarah, Emily, and Noor. They listened intently to the presentations and discussed their exciting plans for their first year with HIVE. They even accomplished some fantastic teaching after we challenged them to teach us a session with only ten minutes prep and very few teaching materials, not an easy task.   Filled with confidence in o...

VP4- Ilkiding’a
When we talk about HIV and AIDS in the United States, we paint a portrait of perseverance, strength, and unity. We think of individuals like Magic Johnson who have been able to live with the virus for decades and show no signs of weakness. We think of a virus that has no cure, but with treatment that is readily available around the country, we can suppress the viral load and keep a patient healthy and significantly extend their lifespan. We think of a virus that is no longer a concern on public health standards because other non-communicable diseases have taken priority. In sub-Saharan Africa, the portrait of HIV and AIDS ...

VP4- Ilkiding’a
During our first weekly meeting, all of the American volunteers and Tanzanian teaching partners were asked to reflect and discuss the reasons we had chosen to participate in this program. Many mentioned that they wanted to step out of their comfort zone and take part in an unforgettable experience. Others discussed their longing to belong to a group that was sure to make a difference in the lives of hundreds of people. Oddly enough, this was something that I was already asking myself only a couple of nights before as I lay in bed in the village. After orientation in Arusha, we were all pumped to arrive at our homestays, to...
