SIC Human vs Shark Swim Sydney, Australia 26/01/2014

On the 26/01/2014 three brave young souls swam 2.2km in the shark infested waters of Sydney harbour to raise money for SIC. Team members included last years Bath Half Marathon runners Matthew Sprague and Francesca Curry. New to the team were Richard Webster (who journeyed from New Zealand for the occasion) and Katie Wimble who took up her role as events photographer. The teams training over the past 6 months involved sunrise swimming at Coogee Beach, acclimatisation training completed in the Blue Mountains lakes as well as a New Zealand training camp held at Waheke island. At all times dusk was avoided, as this is the main feeding time for sharks, although they have been known to snack at other times. As standard banana Nesquick was the training drink of choice, to maximise recovery. As seen in the photos the famous SIC strip was out in force with a few weather and activity related adjustments completed. Special mention to Richard for completing the race with no wetsuit, just a pair of speedos aka budgie smugglers. After a few human pyramids in the SIC kit in front of the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge, it was time for a quick dip with the sharks. Sydney Harbour is home to 7 mature bull sharks. The Bull shark has the highest number of human attacks and fatalities under its belt, with a recent attack in the Harbour leaving a local diver a few limbs shorter than before, it was difficult to shake off the “Jaws” theme tune during the swim.
