VP2–Nkoansiyo

July 5, 2013 We have enjoyed our first week here in Nkoansiyo! Originally, we were nervous to meet our homestay families; Johnson, our joking Operations Manager, had tricked us into thinking our houses were really far apart and that our village was full of swamps. Luckily, when we finally arrived, we realized that our houses were only three minutes apart, and the village is filled with sunflowers. The so-called “swamps” are actually ponds with water lilies. We also have the most beautiful view of Mount Kilimanjaro! We were all so anxious to meet our families. Philip, also known as Travo, met his family first—his homestay baba (father) was the mwenyekiti (village chairman). Travo’s house is on the top of the hill at the edge of the village and has the best view of the mountain. Next was Steph and Ziah with Mama Godi’s house. They live with Mama Godi and her three adorable children. Last, but certainly not least, Sam and Kristine met Mama Wini. Baba Wini, Wini, Steven, Namia and Mama Wini’s sister, Janet. All of our families are amazing, incredible, and so welcoming. We absolutely love it here. Everyone in the village is so friendly and excited about our presence. The village leaders are so helpful, and the church and school leaders have been eager to set up teachings in the coming weeks.
