VP2: Kolila

Kwanto (a Kimeru—tribal language—greeting)! This is one of our last weeks in Kolila: we can count the days we have left on our fingers! Kolila is a village comprised of fields and fields of sunflowers. The houses are very spread out, which makes walking an exercise in cardio every day! There are 6 of us in this team: Charlotte, Julie, Haley and Meghan are Western volunteers and Innocent and Gerald are our wonderful Teaching Partners. With 4 schools and 10 churches, we have our work cut our for us. However the community has been very welcoming. Our village leader has been away from the village for much of the trip, making contacting village social groups difficult, but now that he’s back he has been very helpful. He organized a mass village meeting in the market for us on Thursday. Over 100 people came to listen to us as we gathered under the giant, ancient tree in the middle of the market. We even had some chickens demonstrate the first mode of transmission: sex. Hope they were being safe! Kolila also has two markets every week, on Tuesdays and Fridays. You can see us in the center of the crowd every week, armed with a megaphone and our village health leader Julius.   We started running our Testing Days this week, unfortunately it also started raining frequently this week – and it hadn’t rained at all before!
