A Novel, Highly Sensitive ALK Antibody 1A4 Facilitates Effective Screening for ALK Rearrangements in Lung Adenocarcinomas by Standard Immunohistochemistry
Conclusions: The novel 1A4 antibody represents a promising candidate for screening lung tumors for the presence of ALK rearrangements. (Source: Journal of Thoracic Oncology)

Transient Hyperesthesia and Radicular Pain: An Unrecognised Complication of Thoracic Radiotherapy
We report seven cases of previously undocumented type of transient hyperesthesia and radicular pain occurring after radiotherapy for thoracic malignancies and describe the potential mechanisms. This is different to Lhermitte’s sign in its character, location, and duration of symptoms. Knowledge of such adverse effects will prevent inappropriate investigations and anxiety for patients. Conditional Survival of Malignant Thymoma Using National Population-Based Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Registry (1973–2011)
Conclusions: Conditional survival provides more relevant survival estimates for patients during follow-up. Further studies should investigate the possibility that thymoma should be considered a chronic disease. (Source: Journal of Thoracic Oncology)

Modified Masaoka Stage and Size Are Independent Prognostic Predictors in Thymoma and Modified Masaoka Stage Is Superior to Histopathologic Classifications
Conclusions: Histopathologic classifications of thymomas are associated with prognosis but are in general not independent predictors of outcome. Modified Masaoka stage and proposed Moran staging are independent prognostic parameters for thymoma and superior to histopathologic classifications. (Source: Journal of Thoracic Oncology)

Relationship Between Tumor Size and Survival in Non–Small-Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC): An Analysis of the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Registry
Conclusions: Tumor size is an independent prognostic factor, for early stage and node-positive and locally invasive disease. Prediction tools, such as nomograms, incorporating more detailed information not captured in detail by the routine tumor, node, metastasis classification, may improve prediction accuracy of OS in NSCLC. Mitosis Trumps T Stage and Proposed International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer/American Thoracic Society/European Respiratory Society Classification for Prognostic Value in Resected Stage 1 Lung Adenocarcinoma
Conclusion: In this study of resected stage 1 primary lung adenocarcinoma, we found mitotic index to be the only independent prognostic marker. It was more closely associated with outcome than either pathologic T stage or IASLC/ATS/ERS architecture-based classification. Further validation of concordance and reproducibility in reporting mitotic index, as well as validation of prognostic significance, needs to be undertaken in independent data sets. Phase II Study of Afatinib, an Irreversible ErbB Family Blocker, in EGFR FISH-Positive Non–Small-Cell Lung Cancer
Conclusions: First- or second-line afatinib demonstrated preliminary activity and manageable safety in EGFR FISH-positive patients with advanced non–small-cell lung cancer. (Source: Journal of Thoracic Oncology)

Final Overall Survival Results from a Phase III, Randomized, Placebo-Controlled, Parallel-Group Study of Gefitinib Versus Placebo as Maintenance Therapy in Patients with Locally Advanced or Metastatic Non–Small-Cell Lung Cancer (INFORM; C-TONG 0804)
Conclusion: EGFR mutation was the strongest predictive biomarker for OS benefit of gefitinib as maintenance treatment. The analyses of OS showed that patients achieve a clear and significant survival benefit if they receive EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors as maintenance treatment in EGFR mutation–positive patients. Identification and Validation of Long Noncoding RNA Biomarkers in Human Non–Small-Cell Lung Carcinomas
Conclusions: We have identified and validated multiple novel lncRNAs associated with tumorigenesis and histological differentiation in human NSCLC. These lncRNAs could be further exploited for the development of useful biomarkers in diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of NSCLC. (Source: Journal of Thoracic Oncology)

Prognostic Impact and Clinicopathological Correlations of the Cribriform Pattern in Pulmonary Adenocarcinoma
Conclusions: Our data support the introduction of cpADC as a novel category into future morphology based on pulmonary ADC classifications. Further international studies are required to validate the reported clinicopathological associations of the cribriform pattern. (Source: Journal of Thoracic Oncology)

Validation of a Multiprotein Plasma Classifier to Identify Benign Lung Nodules
Conclusions: This proteomic classifier provides a range of probability estimates for the likelihood of a benign etiology that may serve as a noninvasive, diagnostic adjunct for clinical assessments of patients with IPNs. (Source: Journal of Thoracic Oncology)

Prognostic Impact of Preoperative Tumor Marker Levels and Lymphovascular Invasion in Pathological Stage I Adenocarcinoma and Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Lung
Conclusions: Some important differences in prognostic factors were observed between AD and SQ. High preoperative serum tumor marker levels and lymphovascular invasion should be included as additional criteria in the forthcoming Tumor–Node–Metastasis staging. (Source: Journal of Thoracic Oncology)
