A Study of Serum IgG4 Levels in the Clinical Metamorphosis of Autoimmune Thyroid Disease
Conclusion Our results contrasted with those of previous studies from Japan which reported elevated serum IgG4 as a marker to identify subset of AITD patients. At present, the clinical utility of serum IgG4 measurements in AITD is inconclusive and requires further investigation. (Source: Journal of Clinical and Translational Endocrinology)

Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D but not dietary vitamin D intake is associated with hemoglobin in women of reproductive age in rural northern Vietnam
Conclusions Low vitamin D status may be linked to reduced hemoglobin concentrations, but the role of diet in this association was not evident in this population of WRA in Vietnam where dietary vitamin D intake was very low. (Source: Journal of Clinical and Translational Endocrinology)

The Barbados Insulin Matters (BIM) study: Barriers to insulin therapy among a population-based sample of people with type 2 diabetes in the Caribbean island of Barbados
Conclusions Multiple factors related to patient beliefs and attitudes need to be considered and addressed when initiating insulin in order to minimise psychological insulin resistance and delay. Patients using insulin had less negative perceptions than those not on insulin. (Source: Journal of Clinical and Translational Endocrinology)

The Effect of Diabetes Case Management and Diabetes Resource Nurse Program on Readmissions of Patients With Diabetes Mellitus
Conclusion The Diabetes Resource Nurse program is effective in decreasing readmission rates. Patients seen by the diabetes educators have the lowest rates of readmission. (Source: Journal of Clinical and Translational Endocrinology)

Relationship between retinal vessel diameters and retinopathy in the Inter99 Eye Study
Conclusions Wider retinal vessel diameters were associated with the presence of retinopathy in participants with diabetes, but not in participants without diabetes. The associations between retinal vessel diameters and known retinopathy risk factors were confirmed. These results suggest that information obtained by non-invasive imaging of the interior of the eye can contribute to a better understanding of systemic disease processes. Temporal trend of autonomic nerve function and HSP27, MIF and PAI-1 in type 1 diabetes
Conclusions Neither the neuroprotective substance HSP27 nor the inflammatory substances, MIF and PAI-1 were associated with measures of cardiovascular autonomic nerve function, but a deterioration of such function was observed in relation to increasing HbA1c in T1D during a 20-year follow-up period. Improved glucose control might be associated with protection against autonomic neuropathy in T1D. (Source: Journal of Clinical and Translational Endocrinology)

Evidence-Based Review of Statin Use in Patients with HIV on Antiretroviral Therapy
Conclusion Clinicians need to be familiar with the intricacies of statin selection for the prevention of CVD in patients with HIV on ART. (Source: Journal of Clinical and Translational Endocrinology)

Sense of Coherence is associated with LDL-cholesterol in patients with type 1 diabetes – the PROLONG-Steno study
Conclusions Findings from this study suggest that high SOC may be protective against elevated LDL-cholesterol among people with type 1 diabetes. Interventions to improve self-management among people with low SOC may prove effective to prevent deterioration of metabolic risk factors. Basal insulin therapy is associated with beneficial effects on postoperative infective complications, independently from circulating glucose levels in patients admitted for cardiac surgery
Conclusions Basal+preprandial insulin therapy was associated with a lower frequency of PIC than preprandial insulin therapy alone, suggesting a beneficial effect of basal insulin therapy on post-surgery outcome. (Source: Journal of Clinical and Translational Endocrinology)

Short-term effectiveness of a culturally tailored educational intervention on foot self-care among type 2 diabetes patients in Morocco
Conclusions There was a general improvement in foot-care practices after the intervention. Our findings suggest the role of literacy and previous patient education in shaping the observed variation. Culturally tailored interventions targeting other disease management domains are needed in our context. (Source: Journal of Clinical and Translational Endocrinology)

Serum dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate in assessing the Integrity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis
Conclusion Normal age- and gender-specific DHEA-S level or a DHEA-S ratio of more than 1.78 are valuable markers of HPA integrity. Serum DHEA-S may be a candidate for a less costly approach where ACTH stimulation is unavailable. (Source: Journal of Clinical and Translational Endocrinology)

The effect of text message support on diabetes self-management in developing countries – A randomised trial
Conclusion This study was the first to test the same mHealth intervention in different countries. The finding that text messages did not show an additional effect on diabetes control implied that expectations about mHealth should be cautious. The degree of coverage, the quality of the routine programme, and the progression of disease can interfere with the expected impact. Trial registration: ISRCTN registry (86247213). DNA Methylation Analysis in Malignant Pheochromocytoma and Paraganglioma
Conclusions Here, we report two noteworthy genes, ACSBG1 and MAST1; the aberrant promoter methylation/demethylation of these genes might be involved in their silencing/expression in malignant PCC/PGL. Further investigations are necessary to determine the role of ACSBG1 and/or MAST1 expression in malignant transformation and to establish pathological markers that can evaluate the malignant potential of PCC/PGL. Pre-heparin lipoprotein lipase mass as a potential mediator in the association between adiponectin and HDL-cholesterol in type 2 diabetes
Conclusion The findings in this study suggest that pre-heparin LPL mass may mediate the association between adiponectin and HDL-C in T2DM. This relationship for measures of HDL-C functionality requires future investigation. (Source: Journal of Clinical and Translational Endocrinology)
