Infiltration of the Thyroid Gland by Non-Thyroid Malignancy: A Literature Review Reveals this to be an Unusual Cause of Hyperthyroidism
ConclusionMalignancy-associated hyperthyroidism has a similar underlying mechanism to subacute thyroiditis, in so much as there is damage or destruction of thyroid tissue. In cases of subacute thyroiditis this damage is self-limited, and there is recovery of thyroid function. In some cases of thyroiditis associated with malignancy there may be thyroid gland recovery as the underlying malignancy is treated and controlled. However, if the malignancy progresses, eventual hypothyroidism is likely to ensue. (Source: Journal of Clinical and Translational Endocrinology)

Patterns and Predictors of Antihyperglycemic Intensification at Hospital Discharge for Type 2 Diabetic Patients Not on Home Insulin
ConclusionAn indication for AHI occurs relatively infrequently among hospitalized patients, but when present, AHI occurs in approximately 1 in 3 discharges. AHI appears to be related largely to the degree of hyperglycemia, and diabetes service involvement. Further studies are needed to understand the implications of AHI at hospital discharge on short and long-term outcomes in this population. Heterogenous Biochemical Expression of Hormone Activity in Subclinical/Overt Hyperthyroidism and Exogenous Thyrotoxicosis
ConclusionsThe presence or lack of TSH feedforward activity determines the system response in the thyroid-active (hyperthyroidism) and no-thyroid response to treatment (thyrotoxicosis). This rules out a consistent thread of thyroid hormone response running through the different diagnostic categories. TSH measurements should therefore be interpreted conditionally and differently in subclinical hyperthyroidism and thyrotoxicosis. (Source: Journal of Clinical and Translational Endocrinology)

Improved insulin injection technique, treatment satisfaction and glycemic control: results from a large cohort education study
ConclusionThe study showed that proper selection of pen and professional education can result in the improvement of insulin injection technique, higher patients’ satisfaction and better glycemic control. (Source: Journal of Clinical and Translational Endocrinology)

Low CSF/Serum Ratio of Free T4 is Associated with Decreased Quality of Life in Mild Hypothyroidism - A pilot study
Conclusions Low CSF/serum ratio of free-T4 was correlated with impaired general health and mood, in contrast to serum measurements not showing any correlations. These findings might partly explain why some patients with hypothyroidism suffer from mental symptoms, despite adequate serum levels of free-T4. However, the findings need to be confirmed in further and larger studies. Eicosanoids: Atherosclerosis and Cardiometabolic Health
Conclusion:Further investigations expending current knowledge, should be applied to narrow the specific class and species of eicosanoids responsible for inciting inflammation especially in the context of recent clinical studies assessing the role of dietary lipid in cardiovascular diseases. Implementation and challenges unique to Teleretinal Diabetic Retinal Screening (TDRS) in a private practice setting in the United States
ConclusionsTDRS as an adjunct tool in a private practice endocrinology office significantly improved screening rates and can increase access to recommended diabetic eye care. However, the improvement in screening rates was smaller than other types of practice settings. We explore some of the unique challenges to implementation of TDRS in private practice settings. Liquid and softgel capsules of l-thyroxine results lower serum thyrotropin levels more than tablet formulations in hypothyroid patients
ConclusionsL-T4 ingested as liquid solution or softgel capsule is more bioavailable compared to L-T4 ingested as tablet, and it is slightly superior to capsule L-T4 only in the absence of co-ingestion of interfering medications. (Source: Journal of Clinical and Translational Endocrinology)

Association between Obesity Phenotypes of Insulin Resistance and Risk of Type 2 Diabetes in African Americans: The Jackson Heart Study
ConclusionsHOMA-IR can further stratify diabetes risk in AA adults beyond obesity, identifying non-obese high-risk and lower-risk obese individuals. However, diabetes risk should still be carefully monitored in obese populations despite insulin sensitivity. (Source: Journal of Clinical and Translational Endocrinology)

The effect of needle tenotomy on hammer, mallet and claw toe deformities in patients with diabetes, a retrospective study
ConclusionNeedle flexor tenotomies are a relatively safe and effective treatment compared to tenotomies done by scalpel, both as treatment for ulcers and to prevent formation of new ulcers associated with hammer, mallet and claw toe deformities. As a side note, transfer complications are avoidable if all toes on one or both feet are tenotomized in one procedure. (Source: Journal of Clinical and Translational Endocrinology)

Because of its regulatory effects on serotonin and noradrenalin, T3 has been linked closely to depression and anxiety. It has known that in many cases, the mental symptoms persist even after treatment and after normalization of thyroid function by treatment. Psychosocial factors including stress have been associated with m...
