Additive effects of lupin protein and phytic acid on aortic calcification in ApoE deficient mice
In conclusion, our results show that the cholesterol lowering properties of lupin protein isolate were not caused by phytic acid. However, the hypocalcific action of lupin proteins appears to depend on the combination of lupin proteins and phytic acid. (Source: Journal of Clinical and Translational Endocrinology)

Declining ß-cell function is associated with the lack of long-range negative correlation in glucose dynamics and increased glycemic variability: A retrospective analysis in patients with type 2 diabetes
Conclusions Loss of complexity and increased variability in glucose profiles are associated with declining β-cell reserve and worsening glycemic control. (Source: Journal of Clinical and Translational Endocrinology)

Outcomes of hospitalized diabetic foot patients in a multi-disciplinary team setting: Thailand's experience
Conclusions Management of diabetes-related foot ulcers with a multidisciplinary approach resulted in a limb salvage rate that was greater than 90% and a complete healing rate that was greater than 80%. Successful management of diabetic foot ulcers might be possible in Thailand utilizing this approach. (Source: Journal of Clinical and Translational Endocrinology)

Beneficial paracrine effects of adipocytes from obese rats on cultured endothelial cells
Publication date: March 2014 Source:Journal of Clinical & Translational Endocrinology, Volume 1, Issue 1 Author(s): Nathan T. Jenkins , Jaume Padilla , M. Harold Laughlin The purpose was to test the hypothesis that adipocytes from obese rats would exert pro-atherogenic paracrine effects on cultured endothelial cells compared to adipocytes from lean rats, and that the adverse obesity-associated paracrine effects of adipocytes would be more pronounced in visceral than subcutaneous adipose tissue. Epididymal and subcutaneous adipose tissues were harvested from 32-wk old obese Otsuka Long Evans Tokushima Fatty (...

The role of vitamin D in regulating the iron-hepcidin-ferroportin axis in monocytes
In conclusion, vitamin D regulates the hepcidin-ferroportin axis in macrophages which may facilitate iron egress. Improvement in vitamin D status in patients with CKD may reduce systemic hepcidin levels and may ameliorate anemia of CKD. (Source: Journal of Clinical and Translational Endocrinology)

Pregnancy-induced alterations in mitochondrial function in euthyroid pregnant women and pregnant women with subclinical hypothyroidism; relation to adverse outcome
Conclusion We speculate that the unfavorable effects on mitochondrial function in women with subclinical hypothyroidism may be associated with higher prevalence of adverse pregnancy outcomes. (Source: Journal of Clinical and Translational Endocrinology)

Retinopathy in subjects with type 2 diabetes at a tertiary diabetes clinic in Durban, South Africa: Clinical, biochemical and genetic factors
Conclusion Hyperglycemia, duration of diabetes and proteinuria are associated with DR in Indian and African patients in South Africa, whereas NOS3 and VEGF gene polymorphisms were not associated with DR. (Source: Journal of Clinical and Translational Endocrinology)

Exploring glycosuria as a mechanism for weight and fat mass reduction. A pilot study with remogliflozin etabonate and sergliflozin etabonate in healthy obese subjects
Publication date: March 2014 Source:Journal of Clinical & Translational Endocrinology, Volume 1, Issue 1 Author(s): Antonella Napolitano , Sam Miller , Peter R. Murgatroyd , Elizabeth Hussey , Robert L. Dobbins , Edward T. Bullmore , Derek J.R. Nunez Inhibitors of sodium-dependent glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) increase glucose excretion in the urine and improve blood glucose in Type 2 diabetes mellitus. Glycosuria provides an energy and osmotic drain that could alter body composition. We therefore conducted a pilot study comparing the effects on body composition of two SGLT2 inhibitors, remogliflozin ...

Efficacy and safety of twice-daily treatment with canagliflozin, a sodium glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitor, added on to metformin monotherapy in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus
Conclusions Canagliflozin 50 and 150 mg BID provided significant glycemic efficacy and body weight reduction, and were generally well tolerated in patients with T2DM on background metformin. ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT01340664 (Source: Journal of Clinical and Translational Endocrinology)

May diabetes patients have trouble sleeping despite not having obesity?
Publication date: June 2014 Source:Journal of Clinical & Translational Endocrinology, Volume 1, Issue 2 Author(s): Maurizio Rizzi , Giancarlo Razionale , Michele Bamberga , Massimo Barrella , Georgios D. Kotzalidis , Diana Certan , Maurizio Bevilacqua Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and periodic limb movements during sleep (PLMs) are sleep-related disorders with a high prevalence in type 2 diabetes. Commonly OSA is considered as a consequence of obesity, but several previous studies have shown the presence of OSA in non-obese diabetic patients. A previous study showed higher PLMs prevalence in patients wit...

Metabolomic analysis reveals amino-acid responses to an oral glucose tolerance test in women with prior history of gestational diabetes mellitus
Conclusions Greater change in metabolite levels after a glucose challenge was significantly associated with a longer duration of breastfeeding and higher BMI. Further exploration of these preliminary observations and closer examination of the specific pathways implicated are warranted. (Source: Journal of Clinical and Translational Endocrinology)
