Psychological factors associated with psychosocial insulin resistance in primary care patients in hong kong
This study aims to estimate the prevalence of PIR in primary care patients with DM in Hong Kong and to examine the relationship between PIR and psychosocial factors. Method 402 DM patients from a government-funded general outpatient clinic completed the C-ITAS and a health questionnaire (the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, PHQ-9). Patient demographics were recorded and associations among C-ITAS scores, PHQ-9 scores and demographic data were evaluated. Results There was no relationship between the presence of depression and PIR. Furthermore, the prevalence of PIR was 47.2% in insulin-naive patients but only 8.7% in curr...

Levothyroxine treatment generates an abnormal uterine contractility patterns in an in vitro animal model
Conclusion Our data suggest that changes in myometrial reactivity are induced by T4 treatment. Thus, in conjunction with our previous observations on human myometrial strips, management of hypothyroidism should be improved to reduce the rate of C-sections in this group of patients. Impaired hepatic counterregulatory response to insulin-induced hypoglycemia in hepatic denervated pigs
Conclusion. The findings indicate a blunted hepatic counterregulatory response to hypoglycemia following complete hepatic denervation. This implies that intact neural impulses to and from the liver are necessary to maintain the increase in EGP that protects the organism against hypoglycemia. Influence of diabetes on ambulation and inflammation in men and women with symptomatic peripheral artery disease
Conclusions. In patients with PAD, diabetic men and women with CAD had more severe claudication than their non-diabetic counterparts, as measured by shorter PWT, and the men had further ambulatory impairment manifested by slower 4-meter gait speed. Furthermore, the diabetic patients with CAD had elevations in interleukin-8, leptin, and PEDF. (Source: Journal of Clinical and Translational Endocrinology)

Prevalence of diabetic nephropathy in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in rural communities of Guanajuato, Mexico. Effect after 6 months of Telmisartan treatment
Conclusions A higher prevalence of DN than that reported in the Mexican National Health Survey (ENSANUT) was found. Further research is required in a larger population sample in order to confirm the results of Telmisartan treatment. (Source: Journal of Clinical and Translational Endocrinology)

The burden of diagnosed and undiagnosed diabetes in native Hawaiian and Asian American hospitalized patients
Conclusions Hospitalized Native Hawaiians (41%) and Asian subgroups had significantly higher overall diabetes burdens compared to Whites (23%). Potentially undiagnosed diabetes was associated with poor outcomes. Hospitalized patients, irrespective of race/ethnicity, may require more effective inpatient identification and management of previously undiagnosed diabetes to improve clinical outcomes. Comprehensive assessment of expression of insulin signaling pathway components in subcutaneous adipose tissue of women with and without polycystic ovary syndrome
Conclusions Differential expression of core insulin signaling pathway components in subcutaneous adipose tissue is not a major contributor to the pathogenesis of PCOS. Correlation between clinical phenotypes and expression of several genes in the mitogenic limb of the insulin signaling pathway suggests mitogenic signaling by insulin may regulate steroidogenesis and glucose homeostasis. The impact of a low glycemic index (GI) breakfast and snack on daily blood glucose profiles and food intake in young Chinese adult males
Conclusions Consumption of a low GI breakfast and afternoon snack was capable of attenuating 24-h blood glucose profiles, minimize glycemic excursions and reduce food intake in healthy Asian males. This simple dietary intervention may be an acceptable approach in improving overall glycemia and energy balance in Asians. Patients with type 1 diabetes in Sweden experience more fatigue than the general population
Conclusions Type 1 diabetes is associated with greater fatigue, partly ascribed to vascular disease. Type 1 diabetes of long duration might be associated with fatigue regardless of classical complications, but further research is needed to confirm results. The development of youth-onset severe obesity in urban US girls
Conclusions Youth-onset severe obesity warrants particular concern in urban girls due to high prevalence and an increasing secular prevalence trend. Late childhood and early adolescence may represent a key developmental window for prevention and treatment, but is too late to prevent youth-onset severe obesity entirely. The prolactin receptor: diverse and emerging roles in pathophysiology
Publication date: Available online 16 May 2015 Source:Journal of Clinical & Translational Endocrinology Author(s): Caroline M. Gorvin Investigations over two decades have revised understanding of the prolactin hormone. Long thought to be merely a lactogenic hormone, its list of functions has been extended to include: reproduction, islet differentiation, adipocyte control and immune modulation. Prolactin functions by binding cell-surface expressed prolactin receptor, initiating signalling cascades, primarily utilising Janus kinase-signal transducer and activator of transcription (JAK-STAT). Pathway disruption h...
