Post‐embolization syndrome as an early predictor of overall survival after transarterial chemoembolization for hepatocellular carcinoma
ConclusionsPES is a common complication after TACE and is associated with a two‐fold increased risk of death. Future studies should incorporate PES as a relevant early predictor of OS and examine the biological basis of this association. Missing the obvious: psychosocial obstacles in Veterans with hepatocellular carcinoma
ConclusionsPsychiatric disease and substance abuse are highly prevalent among Veterans with HCC. Most patients survive on a very meager income. These profound socioeconomic and psychosocial problems must be recognized when providing care for HCC to this population to provide adequate treatment and surveillance. Delta ‐slope of alpha‐fetoprotein improves the ability to select liver transplant patients with hepatocellular cancer
ConclusionsIntegration of the AFP delta‐slope with conventional criteria may further improve patient selection and post‐LT outcomes; prospective studies are needed to validate the present proposed model. (Source: HPB: official journal of the International Hepato Pancreat Biliary Association)

Survival outcomes in liver transplant recipients with Model for End ‐stage Liver Disease scores of 40 or higher: a decade‐long experience
ConclusionsLiver transplantation in recipients with MELD scores of ≥40 offers acceptable longterm survival outcomes. Futility predictors indicate the need for prospective follow‐up studies to define the population to gain the highest benefit from this precious resource. Improving treatment and survival: a population‐based study of current outcomes after a hepatic resection in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer
ConclusionsCase identification using International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision (ICD‐9) codes is imperfect; however, comparison of trends over time suggests an improvement in multimodality therapy and survival in patients with colorectal metastases to the liver. Training and practice of the next generation HPB surgeon: analysis of the 2014 AHPBA residents' and fellows' symposium survey
ConclusionsThis survey has demonstrated that HPB surgery has many training routes and practice patterns in the Americas. It highlights the need for specialized HPB surgical training and career education. This survey shows that there are many ways to train in HPB. A 2‐year HPB fellowship was felt to be the best way to train to prepare for a clinically active HPB practice with clinical and outcomes research focus. Cost variation in a laparoscopic cholecystectomy and the association with outcomes across a single health system: implications for standardization and improved resource utilization
ConclusionsSignificant case OR cost variation is present in LCCK across a single health system, and there is no clear association between increased cost and NSQIP outcomes. Placed within the larger context of overall cost, the opportunity exists for improved resource utilization with no obvious risk for a reduction in the quality of care.
