Non-invasive myocardial work index identifies acute coronary occlusion in patients with non-ST-segment elevation-acute coronary syndrome
Conclusion
The presence of a region of reduced MWI in patients with NSTE-ACS identified patients with ACO and was superior to all other parameters. The regional MWI was able to account for the influence of systolic blood pressure on regional contraction. We therefore propose that MWI may serve as an important clinical tool for selecting patients in need of prompt invasive treatment. (Source: European Journal of Echocardiography)

Factors associated with B-lines after exposure to hypobaric hypoxia
Conclusion
B-lines during exposure to altitude seem to reflect the individual response to hypobaric hypoxia and represent clinically relevant alterations at high altitude, also in patients with HAPE. Similar to previous studies, our results support a non-cardiogenic aetiology of B-lines. (Source: European Journal of Echocardiography)

Temporal and spatial characteristics of the area at risk investigated using computed tomography and T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging
Conclusion
T1-weighted CMR accurately quantifies size of the AAR with excellent agreement compared with three independent reference standards. A lateral perfusion gradient results in lower transmural extent of infarction at the edges of the AAR compared with the core. (Source: European Journal of Echocardiography)

Right ventricular echocardiographic indices predict poor outcomes in infants with persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn
Conclusion
TAPSE, GLPS, and right-to-left PDA shunting were associated with progression to death/ECMO. RV free wall strain was not associated with the outcome, suggesting that diminished global strain better reflects clinical outcomes in this group. These thresholds may assist in the decision-making to transfer high-risk infants to ECMO centres. (Source: European Journal of Echocardiography)

Bi-ventricular contractile reserve offers an incremental prognostic value for patients with dilated cardiomyopathy
Conclusion
Assessment of RV contractile reserve during dobutamine stress offers a significantly better prognostic value for patients with DCM. Bi-ventricular contractile reserve may be required for a favourable outcome, so that estimation of RV contractile reserve should be considered part of a comprehensive functional assessment of these patients. Temporal changes in the use and results of exercise echocardiography
Conclusion
Over a 16-year period, there was a gradual decrease in the frequency of myocardial ischaemia among patients referred to our unit for exercise echocardiography, which was parallel to changes in their clinical profile. However, this was not accompanied by a significant reduction in the rate of coronary revascularization. (Source: European Journal of Echocardiography)

Cardiac CT angiography for device surveillance after endovascular left atrial appendage closure
Conclusion
CCTA appears to be a feasible alternative to transoesophageal echocardiography for post-LAA device surveillance to evaluate for device thrombus, residual leak, embolization, position, and pericardial effusion. (Source: European Journal of Echocardiography)

Added value of pulmonary venous flow Doppler assessment in patients with preserved ejection fraction and its contribution to the diastolic grading paradigm
Conclusions
PVFP are obtainable in most patients, add prognostic information on top of routine diastolic parameters, and define an early stage of diastolic dysfunction resembling the pseudo-normal pattern in which S/D ratio is >1, and outcome is excellent. (Source: European Journal of Echocardiography)

The year 2014 in the European Heart Journal--Cardiovascular Imaging: part II
The European Heart Journal—Cardiovascular Imaging, created in 2012, has become a reference for publishing multimodality cardiovascular imaging scientific and review papers. The impressive 2014 impact factor of 4.105 confirms the important position of our journal. In this part, we summarize the most important studies from the journal's third year, with specific emphasis on cardiomyopathies, congenital heart diseases, valvular heart diseases, and heart failure.
