Does the aortic annulus undergo conformational change throughout the cardiac cycle? A systematic review
Accurate annular sizing in transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) planning is essential. It is now widely recognized that the annulus is an oval structure in most patients, but it remains unclear if the annulus undergoes change in size and shape during the cardiac cycle that may impact prosthesis size selection. Our aim was to assess whether the aortic annulus undergoes dynamic conformational change during the cardiac cycle and to evaluate possible implications for prosthesis size selection. We performed a systematic search in PubMed and Embase databases and reviewed all available literature on aortic annulus measu...

Near-infrared spectroscopy-intravascular ultrasound: scientific basis and clinical applications
Coronary angiography underestimates the magnitude of the atherosclerotic burden and cannot detect the presence of disease in the early phases. Recognition of these inherent limitations of angiography has been an impetus for the development of other coronary imaging techniques. The novel near-infrared spectroscopy-intravascular ultrasound (NIRS-IVUS) catheters can detect and quantify the presence of lipid core in the atherosclerotic plaque and associate it with other features such as lumen size and plaque architecture. Lipid-rich plaques are known to pose a higher risk of distal embolization during interventions and plaque ...

Role of risk stratification by SPECT, PET, and hybrid imaging in guiding management of stable patients with ischaemic heart disease: expert panel of the EANM cardiovascular committee and EACVI
Risk stratification has become increasingly important in the management of patients with suspected or known ischaemic heart disease (IHD). Recent guidelines recommend that these patients have their care driven by risk assessment. The purpose of this position statement is to summarize current evidence on the value of cardiac single-photon emission computed tomography, positron emission tomography, and hybrid imaging in risk stratifying asymptomatic or symptomatic patients with suspected IHD, patients with stable disease, patients after coronary revascularization, heart failure patients, and specific patient population. In a...

Multimodality imaging in preoperative assessment of left atrial appendage transcatheter occlusion with the Amplatzer Cardiac Plug
Conclusion The sizing of the device decided using CCTA in the phase of maximum LAA expansion reduces the risk of high-flow leaks and device malposition due to undersizing. (Source: European Journal of Echocardiography)

Causes of death and predictors of survival after aortic valve replacement in low flow vs. normal flow severe aortic stenosis with preserved ejection fraction
Conclusion Reduced SVI is associated with higher cardiac mortality after AVR. CHF is the predominant cause of cardiac mortality after AVR in patients with LF, suggesting the presence of persistent myocardial impairment in this population. (Source: European Journal of Echocardiography)

Epicardial fat volume is related to atherosclerotic calcification in multiple vessel beds
Conclusion Larger volumes of epicardial fat are associated with larger amounts of coronary and extracranial carotid artery atherosclerosis in males, independent of cardiovascular risk factors. This could imply that epicardial fat also exerts a systemic effect on atherosclerosis development. Future longitudinal research is warranted to further disentangle these relationships with a specific focus on sex differences. (Source: European Journal of Echocardiography)

Coronary heart disease risk factors, coronary artery calcification and epicardial fat volume in the Young Finns Study
Conclusion Associations of CHD risk markers with EFV were attenuated after multivariable adjustment. We found no evidence of increased EFV being independently associated with pre-clinical atherosclerosis. EFV was most strongly associated with BMI and waist circumference. Subjects with higher EFV had consistently higher BMI from age 12 suggesting that life-long exposure to higher BMI influences the development of EFV. (Source: European Journal of Echocardiography)
