Leadership Competency Must Be Integrated into Obesity Management Programs and Training
Leadership may be defined as a "shared influencing process to meet common purpose." The leadership process deals with shared visioning, alliance, and motivating. These capabilities require high levels of emotional intelligence. While the clinical nutrition approaches to prevent obesity and overweight mainly focus on managing the condition, there is a big need to build leadership competencies among both caregivers and clients. In many cases, there is no common (shared) vision or agreed weight-loss strategy within the "nutrition practitioner-client unit," nor is enough time allocated to align and motivate the frequently fail...

Short-Term Effect of Physician Nutrition Counseling during a Routine Cardiology Visit
This study evaluated the short-term effect of NC delivered by a physician during a routine cardiology visit. Thirty-one patients (35% male; mean age = 62 y) receptive to dietary change were counseled in a whole-foods plant-based diet. The diet was succinctly explained by the physician as (1) eating a wide variety of vegetable foods; (2) avoiding animal products, oils, and processed foods; and (3) supplementing adequate cyanocobalamin (vitamin B-12). A fasting lipid profile was measured prior to dietary change and repeated after a median of 48 d (range 35–119 d). Total cholesterol decreased from 209.2 ± 17.3 mg...

PUFA Composition of Parenteral Nutrition Affects Intestinal Microbiota and Immune Responses in Neonatal Piglets
Conclusions: The PUFA content of parenteral lipid is associated with differences in gut microbiota and immune response of TPN-fed neonatal piglets. Inclusion of long chain -3 PUFA appears to improve host-microbial interactions at the mucosal surface, although mechanisms are yet to be defined. Inhibition of Lipogenesis by Betaine Involves Reduction of Homocysteine Via Upregulation of Betaine Homocysteine Methyltransferase
In this study, we investigated the underlying mechanism of AMPK activation provided by betaine using different cell lines. Betaine treatment enhanced phosphorylation of AMPK, SREBP-1c, and ACC in H4IIE, but not in HepG2 cell. Betaine homocysteine methyltransferase (BHMT) was induced and homocysteine concentration was decreased by betaine only in H4IIE cell. Homocysteine inhibited protein expression of pAMPK, pACC, pSREBP-1c, and pLKB1 in a dose-dependent manner, which was all prevented by betaine treatment. BHMT protein expression was also inhibited by homocysteine and betaine reversed its inhibition in H4IIE cell. Treatme...

Evaluation of Dietary Nutrients in Relation to Clinical Outcomes in Chronic-Progressive Multiple Sclerosis
Conclusions: Our results indicate that improvement in MSQ is related to increased fiber intake, moderated by age and baseline MSQ. Recent discoveries in the microbiome on progression of MS may explain our results. Increased fiber intake alters the microbiome and may reduce inflammation or signal to the brain via pathways to improve MS symptoms. Figure 1 (Source: Advances in Nutrition)

Potential of Dietary Non-Provitamin A Carotenoids in the Prevention and Treatment of Diabetic Microvascular Complications
Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disease that affects a substantial part of the population around the world. Whether type I or type II, this disease has serious macro- and microvascular complications that constitute the primary cause of death in diabetic patients. Microvascular complications include diabetic retinopathy, nephropathy, and neuropathy. Although these complications are clinically and etiologically diverse, they share a common factor: glucose-induced damage. In the progression of diabetic complications, oxidative stress, inflammation, and the formation of glycation end products play an important role. Previous s...

An Investigation into the Relation between Dietary Quality and Swallowing-Related Quality of Life in Individuals with Neurological Disorders
Parkinson disease (PD) and acquired brain injury (ABI) are unique neurological diagnoses that share common sequelae and risk for reduced dietary quality and swallowing ability that can impact quality of life. Little research exists on the relationship between these variables in individuals living with these diagnoses 1 or more y post-diagnosis. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to examine the relationship between dietary quality and swallowing-related quality of life in individuals with PD and ABI. Sixteen community-dwelling individuals (12 PD, 4 ABI; mean age 62.6 ± 11.6 y; mean time since diagnosis 9.0...

Spatial Heterogeneity and Risk Factors for Stunting among Children Under 5 Years of Age in Ethiopia: a Bayesian Geo-Statistical Model
Conclusion: The findings demonstrate that stunting and severe stunting are highly prevalent. We documented a significant geographic variation in the prevalence of stunting and severe stunting in the district. Household economy is not a major determinant of stunting in this district, while household food security and maternal/guardian literacy played bigger roles. (Source: Advances in Nutrition)
