The Difference A Day Can Make…
Charlie swiftly came by with my medications late yesterday evening.  Within an hour I got to feeling better. I always disparage my medications, but they do work. I admit this reluctantly. Charlie and I walked back out to the car as Horsefly listened to the softly playing stereo of Charlie’s Chevrolet. I think Horsefly was enjoying some Beethoven. Charlie said he was on a classical kick. A few weeks ago, it was NPR. “Got you some chicken fingers,” he happily told me as he handed me the box. I smiled broadly. The Cavalry had truly arrived. “You don’t know how much this means to me,” I told him with a big b...

The Painting Lady…
This is what the kids painted yesterday. My painting instructor gives painting classes for kids on Saturday.  She always has a big showing every weekend. I would have loved this as a child. Us adults painted the same thing Thursday night. I am kind of in the mood for the Holidays. Are you? All the Christmas decorations are up around town. Life Stops for Some of Us and Not for Others… “Quit whining Andrew!” I keep telling myself. “It’s mental illness at work!”  Dad called me this afternoon and said we weren’t having fried chicken tonight. My brother and family were coming home. Well, that made me fe...

Facebook Emotional Blackmail…
These are the kind of posts on Facebook I call emotional blackmail. Just about everyday you get a new one and often you will get several. This one is mild and mostly harmless, but some can be especially egregious.  Like the ones that tell you Jesus will perform a miracle if you post this message onto your timeline by sharing it. Jesus better get ready to perform lots of miracles. He would be busier that a cat covering up poop. (Source: The 4th Avenue Blues)

Thanks…
Now that I am medicated for the evening, thank you to all the people who stood up for me and by me when anonymous attacked and then tried to provoke an emotional response! LOL I honestly didn’t know I still had that many people reading the blog and some of you people I haven’t heard from in ages. Your acts of kindness and camaraderie made my day!   And Look at This? Enter the Esteemed Charlie…
Late this evening, I was using the bathroom while reading a magazine on my iPad when Charlie knocked on my front door. Maggie just went bananas in the den when she realized it was him. “I’m coming!” I hollered extremely loudly from the bathroom trying to expedite things along. Finally, I got to the door and let Charlie inside. I was afraid he would leave and come back later. He’s such a high strung fellow. I was also hoping for my medications early today. “It is cold as shit outside,” said Charlie as he rubbed hands vigorously trying to get them warm. “You need to put some more clothes on as well.” Charlie...

In the Land of Milk and Honey…
Mom called me very bright and early this Saturday morning which was quite extraordinary. She usually doesn’t stir until around lunch or later unless we are going to a movie. “Your cokes, cigarettes, and Helen’s leftovers are on the back porch,” she told me with a business like acumen. Ah, the secretary… Excitedly, I put on some pants and a warm jacket and headed for my parent’s house five minutes away. It was almost 8 am. A warm meatloaf sandwich would certainly hit the spot for breakfast. Dad was gathering all his garden hoses up for the winter when I pulled into my parent’s back driveway. “You need to...

The Day of the Loaf of Beef…
It was growing close to midnight last night when I called my father’s cellphone with my fingers crossed. He usually stays up to 1 A.M. I wanted to know what Helen was cooking the next day. It was a gamble, but mom and dad were sitting in the den reading books as my father’s television droned on and on in the background. “Mom said we are having meatloaf and I wanted to confer with you before I get excited,” I told him. “I thought you would like that,” my father said warmly. I thanked my father very profusely.  Yes, meatloaf would hit the spot on these cool autumn days. I could hear my mother in the backg...

The Flea Saga Continues…
Complications would soon quickly ensue as I was sitting happily at this computer this afternoon. Maggie started to do the lovely routine she does when a family member is here or just some close friends have arrived. “Let’s weigh Maggie,” my mother said with a full head of steam as she carried some scales from her car and into the house. I stood on the scales without Maggie and then with her in my arms. Maggie weighed 40 pounds and mom wrote this down. Next, we drove to Riverside Animal Hospital to check their prices. Mom was happy when it was half than what she currently pays now. There was a catch, though, as Maggie...

It’s Beginning to Look A lot Like Fall…
I always forget how late fall arrives this far south of the Mason Dixon line. The trees and woods around here are just now awash in fall hues and beautiful colors as if the woods were on fire. I also noticed Joyce’s camellias are in full bloom. Last week, Joyce would have been 67. The same age as my parents. Joyce was in the same cheerleading squad with my mother during high school – the infamous and always interesting class of 1964. Noted for their colorful soirées.   Life is Just Not Fair… So ye olde Homeless Guy has PEOPLE PLAGARISING HIS WORK.. Little does he know that the EULA states that all this writi...

Let’s Do the Chimi Changa…
Mrs. Sandra’s husband was and is a career alcoholic. He is just in remission. I will listen intently when she talks about him these days. She will only let him have two beers every day and she hides the rest. My mother really can’t empathize with Sandra like I can. When I first quit drinking, my hands would shake so violently as if I had a palsy or some similar affliction. It took some extremely tough love to get me sober and dried out. Only my father could curtail my heavy drinking with his sometime blunt force manner and dogged determination. “So, how are my favorite ladies tonight?” our waiter said flirtatiously...

A Coming of Age Occurrence…
An elderly Austrian lady lived in the apartment next to mine years ago. She was in her late sixties and I was in my early twenties. She tried to seduce me one evening by inviting me over for dinner. She took her shirt and bra off while asking me to rub moisturizing lotion all over her chest and her breasts. I got scared, nervous, and I left. I was never good at such amorous affairs as with what happened with Christina.  My feelings in hindsight all these years later say I should of followed Christina's lead. We could have had some fun. “Talk dirty to me in German,” Is what I should have said in retrospect. Say No...

A Coercive Early Rising Kind of Morning…
I woke at eight with my cell phone ringing. It was about to buzz right off the side of my bedside table. It was Pauline and she said one of the computers at the lab at the Literacy Center was going out. I got up, grabbed a shower, and headed to the Literacy Center. It was the power supply in the computer that was the source of trouble. I wrote down the part number and told Pauline what it was and what I needed to get the computer back up and running. Not one to dawdle, Pauline then went straight into her office and ordered the part. Trust Begats Trust… Dad called me early mid-morning and he wanted me to ride to Columbus...

Testing My Mettle…
I was just absolutely ravishingly starving late this evening and wanted spaghetti and meat sauce for supper. I went to Kroger and got everything. Now, I remembered I have to go back to Kroger tonight and do my regular shopping with my father. It completely escaped me. He just called me about it to see if I was ready. Kroger twice in a day is certainly a feat for me. I am sure Zack and crew will help us have a speedy checkout. I better put on my JERMAINE AWAY before we leave. (Source: The 4th Avenue Blues)

Kroger, A Novel, There and Back Again…
I toodled around Kroger tonight as my father read Road and Track and Motor Trend type magazines. I was thinking of all the things I wanted to eat this week.  Tuna salad is on the agenda and so are some Chinese themed dishes. I will cook mom’s beef chow mein one night. I bought some frozen eggrolls as well. I also splurged tonight and got two packs of Hebrew National franks and the corresponding buns. That was my one guilty pleasure. I know what you are thinking, “Did he get the midnight chocolate milk?” Being a creature of habit I did get a piece of the Promised Land, but I only got two this time instead of the ...
