Eugenosedin-A improves glucose metabolism and inhibits MAPKs expression in streptozotocin/nicotinamide-induced diabetic rats
This study examined the effects of eugenosedin-A (Eu-A) in a streptozotocin (STZ)/nicotinamide-induced rat model of type II diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Six-week-old Sprague–Dawley rats were randomly divided into three groups: (1) RD group, normal rats fed a regular diet (RD), (2) DM group, T2DM rats fed a high-fat diet, and (3) Eu-A group, T2DM rats fed a high fat diet plus oral Eu-A (5 mg/kg/day). After 30 days, the DM group had higher body weight, higher blood glucose and lower insulin levels than the RD group. The DM group also had increased protein expression of glycogen synthase kinase (GSK) in liver and skeletal mus...

Effect of sevoflurane on the ATPase activity of hippocampal neurons in a rat model of cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury via the cAMP-PKA signaling pathway
Publication date: Available online 14 November 2017 Source:The Kaohsiung Journal of Medical Sciences Author(s): Tie-Jun Liu, Jin-Cun Zhang, Xiao-Zeng Gao, Zhi-Bin Tan, Jian-Jun Wang, Pan-Pan Zhang, Ai-Bin Cheng, Shu-Bo Zhang We aim to investigate the effects of sevoflurane on the ATPase activity of the hippocampal neurons in rats with cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) via the cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) and protein kinase A (PKA) signaling pathway. Sixty rats were assigned into the normal, model and sevoflurane groups (n = 20, the latter two groups were established as focal cerebral IRI model...

Comparison of miniaturized percutaneous nephrolithotomy and flexible ureterorenoscopy for moderate size renal stones in elderly patients
Publication date: Available online 9 November 2017 Source:The Kaohsiung Journal of Medical Sciences Author(s): Faruk Ozgor, Fatih Yanaral, Metin Savun, Harun Ozdemir, Ufuk Caglar, Omer Sarilar Life expectancy has become longer, thus the number of elderly people who require treatment for nephrolithiasis has increased. We aimed to analyze the efficacy of flexible ureterorenoscopy (f-URS) and miniaturized percutaneous nephrolithotomy (mPNL) in the management of 10–30 mm renal stones in patients aged >60 years. In prospective non-randomized series, the data of patients who underwent f-URS or mPNL for kidney s...

An analysis of the risk factors of preeclampsia and prediction based on combined biochemical indexes
This study aims to investigate the risk factors and the joint biochemical indicators predictive value for preeclampsia. Related factors and biochemical indicators were investigated in 558 patients with preeclampsia and 435 normal pregnant women. Multiplicity analysis was performed by logistic regression. The predictive value of the biochemical index and joint biochemical indicators for predicting the incidence of pregnant women preeclampsia were analyzed by ROC curve. A progestation BMI of >24 kg/m2 (OR = 5.412, 95% CI: 1.169–9.447), hypertension history (OR = 7.487, 95% CI: 2.541–11.247) and advanced age (...

Application of six multiplex PCR's among 200 clinical isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa for the detection of 20 drug resistance encoding genes
Publication date: Available online 6 November 2017 Source:The Kaohsiung Journal of Medical Sciences Author(s): Nandagopal Murugan, Jambulingam Malathi, K Lily Therese, Hajib NarahariRao Madhavan Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) is a menacing opportunistic, nosocomial pathogen; become a growing concern as conventional antimicrobial therapy is now futile against it. Multi-drug resistant P. aeruginosa (MDRPA) has distinctive resistance mechanisms such as production of β-lactamases, repression of porin genes and over-expression of efflux pumps. The focus of this study is to standardize and application of multiplex...

Immune profiling of human prostate epithelial cells determined by expression of p38/TRAF-6/ERK MAP kinases pathways
Publication date: Available online 26 October 2017 Source:The Kaohsiung Journal of Medical Sciences Author(s): Yosra Bouraoui, Mongia Achour, Mar Royuela, Ridha Oueslati The aim of the present work was to study the immune profiling of prostate epithelial cells by the expression of ASK-1/p38 and Raf-1/ERK MAP Kinases signaling pathways mediated by TRAF-6. Immunohistochemical and Western blot analyses for TRAF-6, ASK-1, MEK-6, p38, Raf-1, MEK-1, ERK-1, ERK-2 and PSA were carried out in 5 samples of normal prostate gland, 24 samples of BPH and 19 samples of PC. Immunoreaction to TRAF-6 was found in the cytoplasm of epit...

miR-17-92 ameliorates renal ischemia reperfusion injury
Publication date: Available online 27 October 2017 Source:The Kaohsiung Journal of Medical Sciences Author(s): Turun Song, Mianzhi Chen, Zhengsheng Rao, Yang Qiu, Jinpeng Liu, Yamei Jiang, Zhongli Huang, Xianding Wang, Tao Lin There is limited information on the role of miR-17-92 in renal tubular pathophysiology. Therefore, the present study was performed to determine whether miR-17-92 plays a role in ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI)-induced acute kidney injury. We originally demonstrated that miR-17-92 is up-regulated following IRI in vivo. To explore the roles of miR-17-92 in the IRI process, we first gener...
