Adult-to-adult living donor liver transplantation preoperative survey using MDCT, a single medical center experience in Taiwan
This study evaluated multi-detector computed tomography (MDCT) scans performed on potential living donors for adult-to-adult liver transplantation (LDLT), with the aim of identifying significant findings that could be used to exclude potential transplantation donors. We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 151 consecutive potential adult donors for LDLT from May 2007 to January 2015. Liver parenchyma steatosis, focal hepatic mass or intraabdominal malignancy, vascular variations, and donor liver volume were evaluated via MDCT. Grounds for excluding potential donors were also recorded and analyzed. Of the 151 pot...

PGBR extract ameliorates TNF- α induced insulin resistance in hepatocytes
In conclusion, this study found that TNF-α inhibited insulin stimulated glucose uptake and aggravated related proteins expressions, suggesting that it might cause insulin resistance. PGBR extract was found to ameliorate this TNF-α induced insulin resistance, suggesting that it might be used in the future to help control insulin resistance. Microdissection testicular sperm extraction (micro-TESE): Predictive value of preoperative hormonal levels and pathology in non-obstructive azoospermia
Publication date: Available online 19 September 2017 Source:The Kaohsiung Journal of Medical Sciences Author(s): Alper Eken, Feray Gulec The aim of this study was to evaluate the predictive value of preoperative hormonal levels and pathology, as well as the outcome of microsurgical testicular sperm extraction in patients with non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA), presenting to our clinic for treatment of infertility. The records of 145 men with NOA who underwent microdissection testicular sperm extraction (micro-TESE) between March 2013 and November 2016 were studied. The patient's age, testicular volume, hormonal profile...

External validation and comparison of the scoring systems (S.T.O.N.E, GUY, CROES, S-ReSC) for predicting percutaneous nephrolithotomy outcomes for staghorn stones: A single center experience with 160 cases
Publication date: Available online 14 September 2017 Source:The Kaohsiung Journal of Medical Sciences Author(s): Serkan Yarimoglu, Ibrahim Halil Bozkurt, Ozgu Aydogdu, Tarik Yonguc, Ertugrul Sefik, Yusuf Kadir Topcu, Tansu Degirmenci The aim of this study was validation and comparison of stone scoring systems (S.T.O.N.E, GUY, CROES, S-ReSC) used to predict postoperative stone-free status and complications after percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) for staghorn stones. A total of 160 patients who had staghorn renal stones and underwent PCNL between January 2012 and August 2015 were included in the current retrospect...

The clinical characteristics of adult bacterial meningitis caused by non-Pseudomonas (Ps.) aeruginosa Pseudomonas species: A clinical comparison with Ps. aeruginosa meningitis
In conclusion, although Ps. putida, Ps. stutzeri and Ps. mendocina were the major implicated strains of NPAP ABM, the clinical characteristics of this specific group of ABM demonstrated marked heterogeneity. Even though the cases with NPAP ABM had better therapeutic results than those with Ps. aeruginosa ABM, further large-scale studies are needed to better delineate this specific group of ABM. Intravenous drug abuse is a risk factor in the failure of two-stage treatment for infected total hip arthroplasty
Publication date: Available online 3 September 2017 Source:The Kaohsiung Journal of Medical Sciences Author(s): Yu-Jie Su, Sung-Yen Lin, Hsuan-Ti Huang, Je-Ken Chang, Chung-Hwan Chen Reinfection after two-stage revision hip arthroplasty (RHA) is still a complex issue. Only few studies revealed the factors affecting the success rate in the treatment of periprosthetic hip infection (PHI), especially risk factors. A retrospective study was conducted using records of 30 patients underwent two-stage RHA for infected total hip arthroplasty (THA). Treatment was defined as successful if a patient did not need any reoperatio...

Endoluminal stenting for the management of leak following sleeve gastrectomy and loop duodenojejunal bypass with sleeve gastrectomy
We examined the timing of stent placement, size of the leak, stent migration and its complications, total stent treatment duration, and treatment outcome. Between January 2011 and April 2015, seven patients underwent covered SEMS placement for leak after bariatric surgery, including laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) (n = 5) and laparoscopic loop duodenojejunal bypass with sleeve gastrectomy (LDJB-SG) (n = 2). A stent was placed in one patient for infection control and bridging to revisional surgery. Among the other six patients, one patient who received stent placement one year after leak diagnosis failed to achiev...

Excretory/secretory proteases and mechanical movement of Anisakis pegreffii infective larvae in the penetration of BALB/c mice gastrointestine
This study demonstrates the penetration rate of the infective larvae of A nisakis pegreffii in mouse gastrointestine depends on the time after infection, and that only 15% of larvae remain in the gastrointestinal tract 3 h after infection. Strong activities of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and serine proteases, especially plasmin, were found in the excretory/secretory products of A. pegreffii; these can be inhibited by ONO-4817 and phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride, respectively. The protease activity was also significantly decreased in another 1 h of cultivation of larvae in fresh 0.9% normal saline (NS) after previous c...
