Ginseng polysaccharide serves as a potential radiosensitizer through inducing apoptosis and autophagy in the treatment of osteosarcoma
Publication date: Available online 18 August 2017 Source:The Kaohsiung Journal of Medical Sciences Author(s): Xiao-Yu Zhang, Ke Sun, Qi Zhu, Tao Song, Yang Liu Recent studies have confirmed that the combined use of anti-cancer drugs with ionizing radiation (IR) could improve the sensitivity of osteosarcoma (OS) cells. Therefore, it is necessary to identify potential effective drugs for the enhancement of IR-radiosensitivity. In the current study, we found that 20, 10, 5, and 1 μM of ginseng polysaccharide (GPS) significantly suppressed MG-63 cell viability with or without γ-ray radiation in a dose- and time-depen...

Dysregulation of glucose metabolism since young adulthood increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases in patients with bipolar disorder
Publication date: Available online 10 August 2017 Source:The Kaohsiung Journal of Medical Sciences Author(s): Pao-Huan Chen, Yen-Kuang Lin, Chi-Kang Chang, Shuo-Ju Chiang, Shang-Ying Tsai Aging patients with bipolar disorder (BD) are at a high risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). However, few studies have directly examined the association between metabolic risks and CVDs in patients with BD across the lifespan. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine lifetime metabolic risk factors for CVDs in patients with BD. We recruited BD-I patients who were more than 50 years old and had had at least one psychiatr...

Gambogic acid improves non-small cell lung cancer progression by inhibition of mTOR signaling pathway
Publication date: Available online 25 July 2017 Source:The Kaohsiung Journal of Medical Sciences Author(s): Teng Zhao, Hong-Jian Wang, Wen-Wen Zhao, Yi-Ling Sun, Li-Kuan Hu Gambogic acid (GA) has been shown to inhibit cancer cell proliferation, induce apoptosis, and enhance reactive oxygen species accumulation. However, whether GA could improve multidrug resistance through modulating autophagy has never been explored. We demonstrated that the combination of GA and cisplatin (CDDP) resulted in a stronger growth inhibition effect on A549 and NCI-H460 cells using the MTT assay. Furthermore, treatment with GA significan...

Comparison of EMG signals recorded by surface electrodes on endotracheal tube and thyroid cartilage during monitored thyroidectomy
This study compared two surface recording methods that were obtained by electrodes on endotracheal tube (ET) and thyroid cartilage (TC). This study analyzed 205 RLNs at risk in 110 patients undergoing monitored thyroidectomy. Each patient was intubated with an EMG ET during general anesthesia. A pair of single needle electrode was inserted obliquely into the TC lamina on each side. Standard IONM procedure was routinely followed, and EMG signals recorded by the ET and TC electrodes at each step were compared. In all nerves, evoked laryngeal EMG signals were reliably recorded by the ET and TC electrodes, and showed the same ...

Comparison of serum acetyl hydrolase (PAF-AH) and paraoxonase 1 (PON1) values between prostate cancer patients and a control group
This study included 66 patients with Psa value > 4 ng/dl (Group 1) and 44 patients with Psa <4 ng/dl (Group 2) for a total of 110 patients. Parameters measured in serum of PON1, PAF-AH, and MDA were compared between the groups. Additionally the same parameters were compared between patients with prostate biopsy performed due to high Psa and diagnosed with cancer and the control group with normal Psa values. The PAF-AH activity in Group 1 was 125.17 ± 8.64 and in Group 2 was 120.08 ± 9.23 U/ml (p = 0.003). The PON1 activity was 63.12 ± 6.74 and 65.91 ± 7.77 U/ml in the groups, respectively ...

BMP-2 combined with salvianolic acid B promotes cardiomyocyte differentiation of rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells
Publication date: Available online 13 July 2017 Source:The Kaohsiung Journal of Medical Sciences Author(s): Yang Lv, Chen-Wei Gao, Bo Liu, Hao-Yu Wang, Hai-Ping Wang The present study tested the hypotheses that bone morphogenetic protein 2(BMP-2) combined with salvianolic acid B(Sal-B) enhance the differentiation of rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) towards cardiomyocytes in vitro. BMSCs were treated with BMP-2 and Sal-B, alone or in combination, for 72 h, then added new media (excluding inductive substance) and cultured for 4 weeks. The morphologic characteristics, surface antigens and mRNA expressio...

The relationship between the CYP19 alleles rs727479A/C, rs700518A/G, and rs700519C/T and  pregnancy outcome after assisted reproductive technology in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome in a Chinese population: A population-based study
This study investigated the relationship between the CYP19 alleles, rs727479A/C, rs700518A/G, and rs700519C/T, and pregnancy outcome after assisted reproductive technology (ART) in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Between January 2012 and September 2015, 293 PCOS patients undergoing ART were randomly selected for the study. According to pregnancy outcome after ART, the patients were assigned to pregnancy and non-pregnancy groups. CYP19 rs727479A/C, rs700518A/G and rs700519C/T genotypes were determined using the denaturing high-performance liquid chromatography (DHPLC) method. Haplotype frequencies of the CYP...

High Nrf2 expression in alveolar type I  pneumocytes is associated with low recurrences in primary spontaneous pneumothorax
This study examined whether nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) expression in alveolar type I pneumocytes was associated with the clinical manifestations of PSP patients including disease recurrence. Eighty-eight PSP patients who were managed with needlescopic video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (NVATS) were included in this study. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) was assessed to determine Nrf2 expression in resected lung tissues and the results were correlated with clinicopathological characteristics by the chi-square or the Fisher's exact test. The prognostic value of Nrf2 for overall recurrence was evaluated b...
