Seroprevalence of CMV, HSV-2 and HBV among HIV-Infected Malawian Children: A Cross-sectional Survey
Conclusions: CMV infection occurred early in life, and few children had specific signs of CMV infection at the time of ART initiation. Unrecognized HBV infection represents opportunities for testing and treatment of HIV/HBV co-infected children. (Source: Journal of Tropical Pediatrics)

Clinical Manifestations of Hyponatremia and Hypernatremia in Under-Five Diarrheal Children in a Diarrhea Hospital
Conclusion: Early diagnosis and prompt management of hypo- and hypernatremia by identifying simple clinical predicting factors of these two conditions in diarrheal children <5 years of age is critically important to prevent deaths in such children, especially in resource-limited settings. Outcome of Severe Dengue Viral Infection-caused Acute Liver Failure in Thai Children
To determine clinical course and outcomes of liver functions in children with dengue viral infection-caused acute liver failure (ALF), the records of patients aged <15 years attending our institution during 1989–2011 were reviewed. Of the 41 ALF patients, 2, 6 and 33 patients had dengue hemorrhagic fever grade II, III and IV, respectively. Multiorgan failure including respiratory failure, massive bleeding and acute kidney injury occurred in 80.0%, 96.0% and 84.0% of the ALF cases, respectively, with an overall fatality rate of 68.3%. Aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels were h...

Scrub Typhus: A Clinico-Laboratory Differentiation of Children with and without Meningitis
We report the clinical and laboratory profile of 96 children with scrub typhus and compared those with and without meningitis. Twenty seven (28%) children had clinical and laboratory evidence of meningitis. The most frequent presenting features were fever (100%), meningeal signs (66.6%), nausea and vomiting (56.3%), seizures (55.5%) and altered sensorium (51.8%). The children with meningitis presented early and had significantly lower respiratory and renal impairments when compared with the non-meningitis group. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis revealed elevated total leukocyte count (86.73 ± 94.50 cells/mm3), mon...

Selenium Supplementation for Prevention of Late-Onset Sepsis in Very Low Birth Weight Preterm Neonates
Conclusion: Preterm VLBW neonates are Se deficient at birth. Se supplementation at 10 µg/day resulted in getting the Se levels into the acceptable normal level and reduced the incidence of the first episode of late-onset sepsis in these neonates. (Source: Journal of Tropical Pediatrics)

Evaluation of Nutritional Status in Children during Predialysis, or Treated By Peritoneal Dialysis or Hemodialysis
Conclusion: It is considered that bioelectrical impedance analysis measurement should be used with anthropometric measurements, which are easy to perform, to achieve more accurate nutritional evaluation in children. (Source: Journal of Tropical Pediatrics)

Nasal HFOV with Binasal Cannula Appears Effective and Feasible in ELBW Newborns
We present three premature cases who were ventilated with n-HFOV with Neotech RAM Cannula as interphase. In two cases, we used n-HFOV with good results to prevent extubation failure, and in one case, we used it to avoid intubation with success. n-HFOV may be useful both in early times of respiratory failure and also to facilitate extubation particularly in patients with prolonged intubation. Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia with Non-functional Mutations in Both Alleles in a Clinically Unaffected Infant
Conclusions: Although molecular genetic methods can theoretically predict loss of function in CAH, our infant was clinically unaffected even without therapy at 6 years of age. We speculate that in CAH, remaining enzyme activity can be sufficiently high, despite the presence of loss of function mutations, which do not affect infants clinically. Genetic Diversity among Group A Streptococcus Isolated from Throats of Healthy and Symptomatic Children
Conclusion: Throat swab cultures must be used in all cases of pharyngitis. Early and appropriate antibiotic therapy will prevent complications. Asymptomatic throat carriage of GAS in children was low in our study. However, they can still act as reservoirs. Emm typing helps in understanding epidemiology and finding new types.
