Risk Factors for Malnutrition in Children at Port Moresby General Hospital, Papua New Guinea: A Case-Control Study
Fifty children admitted for malnutrition were age matched with 50 admitted for other reasons. These children were more likely to be female (p = 0.003), born low birth weight (p = 0.02), after a short birth interval (p = 0.014) and to be incompletely vaccinated (p < 0.001) than control children, and to be living in rural villages or settlement housing (p < 0.001) with inadequate water supply (p < 0.001) and sanitation (p = 0.037), with overcrowding (p = 0.016) and low household income (p = 0.04). Their parents were more likely to have had no or only rudimentary education than parents of control children [Odds ratio...

Increased Morbidity in Early Childhood Among HIV-exposed Uninfected Children in Uganda is Associated with Breastfeeding Duration
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-exposed uninfected children (HEU) have an increased risk of morbidity and mortality compared with HIV-unexposed uninfected children (HUU); however, prior studies have not fully accounted for the role of both breastfeeding and age on this association. In this cohort of HEU and HUU in Uganda, non-breastfeeding HEU, from 6–11 months compared with non-breastfeeding HUU had a higher risk of hospitalizations [relative risk (RR): 10.1, 95% confidence interval (CI): 3.70–27.6], severe febrile illness (RR: 3.84, 95% CI: 2.06–7.17), severe diarrhea (RR: 6.37, 95% CI: 2.32–17...

Fluid Overload in a South African Pediatric Intensive Care Unit
Conclusions: Low FO ≥ 10% prevalence with 28 day mortality 10%. Higher FO% with admission weight associated with mortality (p = 0.04). We advocate further investigation of FO% as a simple bedside tool. (Source: Journal of Tropical Pediatrics)

PAIN--Perception and Assessment of Painful Procedures in the NICU
This study shows that the neonates in the NICU in developing countries experience many painful procedures. The awareness about this intensity of pain should provide a valuable tool in formulating pain-reduction protocols for management in low resource settings. (Source: Journal of Tropical Pediatrics)

Pediatric Appendicitis in a Developing Country: What are the Clinical Predictors and Outcome of Perforation?
Conclusion: Children whose appendicitis were perforated had longer duration of symptoms, higher white cell counts and absolute neutrophil counts. Those with S.aureus cultured from intra-operative pus appeared to suffer more complications. (Source: Journal of Tropical Pediatrics)

A Perinatal Cytomegalovirus Infection in an Immunocompetent Patient with Chorioretinitis
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is the most common viral infection of newborns in all periods worldwide. Perinatal form of infection is usually less severe than the congenital form because of having a lower rate for serious organ involvement like central nervous system. In this article, we report a 3-month-old immunocompetent patient who was diagnosed as having perinatal CMV infection with a scar of chorioretinitis after presenting with gastroenteritis and hepatitis. The Epidemiological and Clinical Characteristics of Diarrhea Associated with Enteropathogenic, Enteroaggregative and Diffuse-Adherent Escherichia coli in Egyptian Children
A total of 220 enteroadherent Escherichia coli were identified from 729 Egyptian children with diarrhea using the HEp-2 adherence assay. Enteropathogenic E.coli (EPEC = 38) was common among children <6 months old and provoked vomiting, while diffuse-adhering E.coli (DAEC = 109) induced diarrheal episodes of short duration, and enteroaggregative E.coli (EAEC = 73) induced mild non-persistent diarrhea. These results suggest that EPEC is associated with infantile diarrhea in Egyptian children. (Source: Journal of Tropical Pediatrics)

Predominance of Rotavirus G1[P8] Genotype among Under-Five Children with Gastroenteritis in Mwanza, Tanzania
We analyzed stool samples from underfives with gastroenteritis for rotavirus infection between January 2010 and June 2011. A total of 393 stool specimens were examined for rotavirus infection using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Hundred selected positive specimens were genotyped using multiplex polymerase chain reaction. Out of 393 underfives, 194 (49.4%) had rotavirus infection, with 96.9% of infected underfives being <2 years. Underfives infected with rotavirus had prolonged hospital stay than those without rotavirus infection (P = 0.0001). G1 was the most predominant G type (59%) followed by G8 (13%) whil...

Apps for Management of Sick Newborn: Evaluation of Impact on Health Care Professionals
The objective of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of interactive mobile device application ‘Apps on sick newborn care’ as a training tool, in improving the knowledge and skill scores of postgraduate nursing students (N = 27). A training workshop was conducted in small workstations by the facilitators using the modules on android device and preloaded videos in which the procedure was systematically demonstrated. A mixed-methods approach consisting of pre–post tests, Likert’s scale and focus group discussion were used to assess the knowledge, skills and perception of the participants. The scores...
