Factors Associated with Perinatal Mortality in Kassala, Eastern Sudan: A Community-Based Study 2010-2011
This study investigated the factors associated with perinatal mortality in eastern Sudan from 2010 to 2011. Among 808 deliveries, there were 15 pairs of twins, giving 823 babies at risk of perinatal deaths. There were 761 live births and 62 perinatal deaths. Of the 62 perinatal deaths, 25 (40.3%) were stillbirths and 37 (59.7%) were early neonatal deaths. The stillbirth risk, early neonatal mortality risk and perinatal mortality rate were 30.9 per 1000 pregnancies, 48.6 per 1000 live births and 75.3 per 1000 births, respectively. In the logistic regression model, home delivery [odds ratio (OR) = 5.1; confidence interval CI...

Errors in Filling WHO Death Certificate in Children: Lessons from 1251 Death Certificates
Our objective was to identify the frequency and types of various pediatric death certification errors. All available death certificates (n = 1424, from January to December 2005 and from January to July 2007) were retrieved from medical record library in a tertiary pediatric hospital. These were analyzed retrospectively (66%) and prospectively (34%) for the year 2005 and 2007, respectively. Only 11% of death certificates were filled accurately. In the remaining 89%, the total number of errors ranged from 0-5 per death certificate. The most common major and minor errors were "improper sequencing" (50.3%) and "absence of time...

Pediatric Metabolic Syndrome and Cell Blood Counts: Bivariate Bayesian Modeling
This study aimed to assess the relationship of the white blood cell (WBC) and the red blood cell (RBC) counts with components of MetS in the pediatric age group. The sample consisted of 300 children (152 boys) aged 6–12 years. Hierarchical Bayesian analysis of the bivariate Poisson regression model was used to estimate the effect of various components of MetS according to the cell blood counts. We found that RBC and WBC counts were correlated with the fasting blood glucose, the waist-to-height ratio, serum triglycerides and the blood pressure levels adjusted for age, the body mass index, gender, total cholesterol, lo...

Prevalence and Risk Factors for Iron-Deficiency Anemia in Very-Low-Birth-Weight Preterm Infants at 1 Year of Corrected Age
Conclusions: Prevalence of anemia is high at 1 year of CA. Dietary and environmental education strategies may help prevent anemia after discharge. (Source: Journal of Tropical Pediatrics)

Assessment of Drinking Water Fortification with Iron Plus Ascorbic Acid or Ascorbic Acid Alone in Daycare Centers as a Strategy to Control Iron-Deficiency Anemia and Iron Deficiency: A Randomized Blind Clinical Study
Conclusions: Water fortification is efficient in controlling iron deficiency and anemia. Iron stores’ recovery depends on a more effective offer of iron. Water fortification must be preceded by a careful assessment of the previous nutritional status. (Source: Journal of Tropical Pediatrics)

Aftermath of a Clinical Trial: Evaluating the Sustainability of a Medical Device Intervention in Ghana
A randomized controlled trial recently demonstrated that continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) effectively decreases respiratory rate in children presenting to Ghanaian district hospitals with respiratory distress. A follow-up study 16 months later evaluated the extent to which the skills and equipment necessary for CPAP use have been maintained. Seven of eight CPAP machines were functional, but five of eight oxygen concentrators and three of four electric generators were non-functional. Nurses trained by US study personnel (first-generation) and nurses trained by Ghanaian nurses after the study (second-generation) we...

Effectiveness of Personalized Written Asthma Action Plans in the Management of Children with Partly Controlled Asthma in Trinidad: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that the provision of personalized WAAPs may play a useful role in the management of children with partly controlled asthma but is no better than standard care. Asthma education is a critical component in the prevention of exacerbations in children with partly controlled asthma. (Source: Journal of Tropical Pediatrics)

Epidemiology of Bacteremia in Young Hospitalized Infants in Vientiane, Laos, 2000-2011
As data about the causes of neonatal sepsis in low-income countries are inadequate, we reviewed the etiology and antibiotic susceptibilities of bacteremia in young infants in Laos. As Staphylococcus aureus is the leading cause of bacteremia in Lao infants, we also examined risk factors for this infection, in particular the local practice of warming mothers during the first weeks postpartum with hot coals under their beds (hot beds). Clinical and laboratory data regarding infants aged 0–60 days evaluated for sepsis within 72 h of admission to Mahosot Hospital in Vientiane, Laos, were reviewed, and 85 of 1438 (5.9%) in...

Accurate Estimation of Body Surface Area in Under-5 Children with Non-Edematous Severe Acute Malnutrition
Conclusions: Among seven equations, Mosteller is useful for BSA calculation in NE-SAM. SAM Mosteller modified equation (164.551 x [Ht x Wt]0.5) has least error and can serve as best measure of BSA in SAM children. (Source: Journal of Tropical Pediatrics)
