HIV Provider-Patient Communication Regarding Cardiovascular Risk: Results from the 2010 AIDS Treatment for Life International Survey
Conclusion: We found that HIV clinicians worldwide are not sufficiently addressing CVD risk factors with their patients. Expanded training and education for HIV clinicians should include effective approaches to the mitigation of CV risk factors. Group Problem-Solving Therapy for Postnatal Depression among HIV-Positive and HIV-Negative Mothers in Zimbabwe
Postnatal depression (PND) is a major problem in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). A total of 210 postpartum mothers attending primary care urban clinics were screened for PND at 6 weeks postpartum using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (Fourth Edition; DSM-IV) criteria for major depression. The HIV prevalence was 14.8%. Of the 210 enrolled postpartum mothers, 64 (33%) met DSM IV criteria for depression. Using trained peer counselors, mothers with PND (n = 58) were randomly assigned to either group problem-solving therapy (PST, n = 30) or amit...

CD4 Counts in Laboratory Monitoring of HIV Disease--Experience from Western India
Conclusion: The cutoff values of CD4 counts for HIV disease may need to be revised for India. Regular CD4 count estimation is a must for monitoring disease progression in people living with HIV/AIDS. (Source: Journal of the International Association of Physicians in AIDS Care (JIAPAC))

The Effect of Relaxation Interventions on Cortisol Levels in HIV-Seropositive Women
Conclusions: Results suggest that specific relaxation techniques may be partially responsible for cortisol decreases associated with relaxation and CBSM. (Source: Journal of the International Association of Physicians in AIDS Care (JIAPAC))

AIDS-Related Lymphoma: Resolution with Antiretroviral Therapy Alone
We present a case of a female patient with HIV (CD4 count of 576 cells/mm3) diagnosed with a stage III-B non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 2009 while off HAART. She was subsequently started on HAART, leading to full resolution of her lymphoma without any chemotherapeutic intervention. She was last seen in the clinic in December 2013 without any evidence of recurrence of her lymphoma. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of a stage III-B non-Hodgkin lymphoma in an HIV-infected patient, which resolved with only HAART. Rhodococcus equi Pericarditis in a Patient Living with HIV/AIDS
We report a case of a 48-year-old male patient with newly diagnosed HIV/AIDS presenting with recurrent R equi bacteremia, pericardial effusion, and pericardial cyst. The infection was treated with drainage of the pericardial effusion and cyst and 2 weeks of intravenous vancomycin and 6 months of oral azithromycin and levofloxacin. Discussion: Rhodococcus equi causes pericarditis and pericardial effusion. It can be effectively treated with debridement, drainage, and a prolonged course of antibiotics. In vitro antibiotic susceptibility should be checked as resistance to antibiotics can develop, especiall...

Religion and HIV/AIDS Stigma in Puerto Rico: A Cultural Challenge for Training Future Physicians
In this study, we documented the association of religion with HIV/AIDS stigma in a sample of medical students in Puerto Rico. Findings suggest that importance placed on religion, and participation in religious activities, is associated with HIV/AIDS stigma for this population. Association between Dog Guardianship and HIV Clinical Outcomes
Despite numerous potential health outcomes of dog guardianship, their value has not been examined in the HIV-positive population. The study objective was to examine the relationship between dog guardianship and HIV clinical outcomes (antiretroviral adherence [≥95% versus <95%], HIV viral load [≥48 versus <48 copies/mL], and CD4 count) among HIV-positive individuals. The authors conducted a secondary analysis of baseline data of 370 HIV-positive men on antiretroviral regimen enrolled in the Duo Project. Generalized estimating equations were used for inferential regression analyses, while controlling for the foca...

Coinfection with Hepatitis C Virus among HIV-Positive People in the Kathmandu Valley, Nepal
Conclusion: The high prevalence of HCV coinfection among both individuals receiving ART and those not receiving ART suggests that screening for HCV among HIV-positive people would be useful, in particular, for those with lifetime IDU and soon after their HIV diagnosis. Improving PMTCT Uptake in Rural South Africa
Discussion: Results indicate that increasing male attendance at antenatal clinic visits may be "necessary but not sufficient" to increase PMTCT uptake. Increasing HIV knowledge of both partners and encouraging active male participation in the PMTCT process through psychoeducational interventions may be a strategy to increase the uptake of PMTCT in South Africa. Effects of Stigmatization/Discrimination on Antiretroviral Therapy Adherence among HIV-Infected Patients in a Rural Tertiary Medical Center in Nigeria
Conclusion: The PLWHAs with low levels of stigmatization and discrimination are more likely to adhere to ART than those with high levels. Counseling services and health education on adherence should be a strong component of all PLWHA care. (Source: Journal of the International Association of Physicians in AIDS Care (JIAPAC))
