Determination of trace amounts of Brown HT as a food dye by a CPE-scanometry method
In this study, trace amounts of Brown HT were extracted, pre-concentrated and determined by cloud point extraction-scanometry (CPE-scanometry) as a simple, fast and inexpensive method. The procedure is based on CPE of Brown HT from an aqueous solution, diluting the extracted surfactant-rich phase with ethanol to 500μL, transferring the appropriate volume to Plexiglas® cells and scanning the cells. Then, the colour of each cell was analyzed by software written in visual basic (VB 6) into red, green and blue values. Effective parameters for the extraction efficiency, such as the pH of the system, the concentration of surfa...

The inhibitory activity of aldose reductase of flavonoid compounds: Combining DFT and QSAR calculations
This study shows that the MLR and MNLR predict activity, but compared to the results of the ANN model, we conclude that the predictions achieved by the latter are more effective and better than the other models. The results indicate that the ANN model is statistically significant and shows very good stability toward data variation for the validation method. The contribution of each descriptor to the structure–activity relationship was also evaluated. (Source: Journal of Taibah University for Science)

Water body extraction and change detection using time series: A case study of Lake Burdur, Turkey
In this study, spatiotemporal changes in Lake Burdur from 1987 to 2011 were evaluated using multi-temporal Landsat TM and ETM+ images. Support Vector Machine (SVM) classification and spectral water indexing, including the Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI), Modified NDWI (MNDWI) and Automated Water Extraction Index (AWEI), were used for extraction of surface water from image data. The spectral and spatial performance of each classifier was compared using Pearson's r, the Structural Similarity Index Measure (SSIM) and the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE). The accuracies of the SVM and satellite-derived indexes were teste...

Modelling the cytotoxic activity of pyrazolo-triazole hybrids using descriptors calculated from the open source tool “PaDEL-descriptor”
In this study, we developed QSAR models for the anti-proliferative activity of pyrazolo-triazole hybrids [(1-benzyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)(1,3-diphenyl-1H-pyrazol-4-yl) methanone] on human brain cancer (U87MG), lung cancer (A549), prostate cancer (PC-3), and colon cancer (HT-29) cell lines. We employed K-means cluster analysis to split the data sets. Statistically robust models were generated [ pIC 50 (U87MG): R =0.873, Q 2 =0.554, R p r e d 2 = 0.866 ; pIC 50 (A549): R =0.879, Q 2 =0.637, R p r e d 2 = 0.858 ; pIC 50 (PC3): R =0.953; Q 2 =0.850; R p r e d 2 = 0.796 ; pIC 50 (HT-29): ...

Shifted Legendre method with residual error estimation for delay linear Fredholm integro-differential equations
Publication date: Available online 11 April 2016 Source:Journal of Taibah University for Science Author(s): Şuayip Yüzbaşı In this paper, we suggest a matrix method for obtaining the approximate solutions of the delay linear Fredholm integro-differential equations with constant coefficients using the shifted Legendre polynomials. The problem is considered with mixed conditions. Using the required matrix operations, the delay linear Fredholm integro-differential equation is transformed into a matrix equation. Additionally, error analysis for the method is presented using the residual function. Illustrative example...

3D-QSAR Models to Predict Anti-Cancer Activity on a Series of Protein P38 MAP Kinase Inhibitors
In this study, three-dimensional quantitative structure-activity relationship (3D-QSAR) analyses, including Multiple Linear Regression (MLR), Partial Least Squares (PLS), Multiple Non-Linear Regression (MNLR), Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and cross-validation analyses, were performed on a set of P38 MAP kinases as anti-cancer agents. This method, which is based on molecular modeling (molecular mechanics, HF), was used to determine the structural parameters, electronic properties, and energy associated with the molecules we examined. MLR, PLS, and MNLR analyses were performed on 46 protein P38 MAP kinase analogues to det...

Artichoke as a non-conventional precursor for activated carbon: Role of the activation process
Publication date: Available online 3 June 2016 Source:Journal of Taibah University for Science Author(s): Gamal M.S. ElShafei, Ibrahim M.A. ElSherbiny, Atef S. Darwish, Christine A. Philip Artichoke peels were used to produce activated carbon using chemical activation methods. Two activation protocols were compared: a two-step method A and a one-step method B. As newly used activating agents, KCl, CrCl3 and TiCl4 were compared. The results show that method B is superior to A. KOH with method B had an area of 2321m2/g and a total pore volume 1.0071cm3/g, of which 0.9794cm3/g was confined to micropores. The corre...
