Reconsidering the Medawar paradigm placental viviparity existed for eons, even in vertebrates; without a “problem”: Why are Tregs important for preeclampsia in great apes?
This manuscript follows reflections that were in fact already initiated when reviewing recent developments on Tregs in the paper I co-authored with Maria Ruocco and David Klatzmann (Ruocco et al., 2014). Some of these were also present in my presentations and papers for the ESRI Hamburg and Budapest meetings. I believed it important to reconsider the Medawar paradigm both for reproductive immunology in general and for preeclampsia in particular. Hence, it is not a review of Tregs and allopregnancy; but a revision imposed by studies of the evolution of viviparity of the concept that the “evolution of viviparity” in gene...

PreImplantation Factor (PIF*) Endogenously Prevents Preeclampsia: Promotes Trophoblast Invasion and Reduces Oxidative Stress
Effective embryo/maternal communication is the key for successful pregnancy, and it becomes operative starting already just post-fertilization. Conversely, very early defective signaling can lead to failed implantation, may cause miscarriage, IUGR and/or preeclampsia (PE). The zona-pellucida is a semi-permeable protective barrier which enables embryo specific signals to condition the mother.(Barnea, 2014) (Source: Journal of Reproductive Immunology)
