Reconsidering the Medawar paradigm placental viviparity existed for eons, even in vertebrates; without a “problem”: Why are Tregs important for preeclampsia in great apes?

This manuscript follows reflections that were in fact already initiated when reviewing recent developments on Tregs in the paper I co-authored with Maria Ruocco and David Klatzmann (Ruocco et al., 2014). Some of these were also present in my presentations and papers for the ESRI Hamburg and Budapest meetings. I believed it important to reconsider the Medawar paradigm both for reproductive immunology in general and for preeclampsia in particular. Hence, it is not a review of Tregs and allopregnancy; but a revision imposed by studies of the evolution of viviparity of the concept that the “evolution of viviparity” in general raised “immunological problems”.
