Biological effects and mechanisms of action of mesenchymal stem cell therapy in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the most frequent chronic respiratory disease and a leading cause of morbidity and mortality, worldwide. Given that the foremost risk factor leading to the development of COPD is cigarette smoke, the initial treatment for COPD is smoking cessation. Even after smoking cessation, inflammation, apoptosis and oxidative stress can persist and continue to contribute to COPD. Although current therapies for COPD (which are primarily based on anti-inflammatory drugs such as corticosteroids, theophylline and bronchodilators) reduce airway obstruction, limit COPD exacerbation and improv...

Efficacy and Safety of Morniflumate for the Treatment of Symptoms Associated with Soft Tissue Inflammation
This article reviews evidence supporting the efficacy and safety of morniflumate. Based on available evidence and the favourable tolerability profile emerging from extensive clinical use, morniflumate appears to be a valid and well-tolerated alternative to other NSAIDs, or to antibiotics, for the treatment of pain and other symptoms of soft tissue inflammation. Primary sphenoid sinus meningioma resection via transnasal transsphenoid approach: A case report
We present the case of a 61-year-old woman with left oculomotor nerve paralysis. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a 43 x 31 x 33 mm mass in the sphenoid sinus invading anteriorly into the posterior ethmoid sinus and superiorly into the base of the anterior cranial fossa. Microscopic transnasal transsphenoidal surgery was performed with multilayer reconstruction to the cranial base. Postoperative MRI confirmed total resection and recovery was uneventful. The pathological diagnosis was grade I meningothelial meningioma. Meningioma should be included in the differential diagnosis of sphenoid sinus mass. Surgery is th...

Haematidrosis associated with epilepsy in a girl successfully treated with oxcarbazepine: Case report
The aetiology and pathological mechanisms involved in the development of haematidrosis (bloody sweat) remain unclear. There is no specific treatment for this disorder. This case report describes the clinical manifestations and treatment of a 9-year-old female with haematidrosis associated with epilepsy. The diagnosis of haematidrosis was confirmed by medical personnel who observed the bleeding and were able to rule out other causes of the bloody exudate. The episodes of bleeding were spontaneous, transient, and self-limited. Smears of the bloody exudate contained all of the components of peripheral blood. A skin biopsy tak...

Serum sCD95L concentration in patients with spinal cord injury
Conclusion The serum sCD95L concentration fell significantly during the first 24 h after traumatic spinal cord injury. Concentrations then rose, becoming significantly higher than admission levels at 8 weeks. sCD95L may represent a possible therapeutic target for traumatic spinal cord injury. Addition of all-trans-retinoic acid to omeprazole and sucralfate therapy improves the prognosis of gastric dysplasia
Conclusions The use of conventional therapy plus ATRA for gastric dysplasia was associated with improved efficacy compared with conventional therapy alone. It was also accompanied by increased Rb expression and decreased HER2 expression in gastric mucosa. The addition of ATRA to conventional therapy for gastritis may improve the prognosis of gastric dysplasia. (Source: Journal of International Medical Research)

Suppressive effects of gemcitabine plus cisplatin chemotherapy on regulatory T cells in nonsmall-cell lung cancer
Conclusions CD4+CD25+FOXP3+ and CD8+CD28– Treg percentages were higher in patients with NSCLC than control subjects, and increased in line with tumour progression. Percentages of CD4+CD25+FOXP3+ and CD8+CD28– Tregs were significantly reduced following gemcitabine plus cisplatin chemotherapy. (Source: Journal of International Medical Research)
