Is there an association between dietary intake and academic achievement: a systematic review
ConclusionsThis review highlights that moderate associations exist for dietary intakes characterised by regular breakfast consumption, lower intakes of energy‐dense, nutrient‐poor foods and overall diet quality with respect to outcomes of academic achievement. Future studies should consider the use of validated dietary assessment methods and standardised reporting of academic achievement. (Source: Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics)

Low socio ‐economic status is a newly identified independent risk factor for poor vitamin D status in severely obese adults
ConclusionsVitamin D deficiency is extremely common among obese patients, and the prevalence of severe deficiency is high. The association of adiposity, high body mass index, metabolic syndrome and inflammation with vitamin D status is marked, whereas low socio‐economic status appears to be a major risk factor for severe vitamin D deficiency, suggesting that vitamin D deficiency may at least in part be responsible for the greater health vulnerability of populations with low socio‐economic status. Validity of short food questionnaire items to measure intake in children and adolescents: a systematic review
ConclusionsThe present study has identified valid and reliable questions for the range of key food groups of interest to public health nutrition. Questions were more likely to be reliable than accurate, and relatively few questions were both reliable and accurate. Gaps in repeatable and valid short food questions have been identified that will provide direction for future tool development. (Source: Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics)

Longitudinal associations between micronutrient consumption and leukocyte telomere length
ConclusionsOur findings suggest that the earlier consumption of vitamin C, folate and potassium, which are abundant in fruits and vegetables, can delay biological ageing in middle‐aged and older adults. (Source: Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics)

Does body mass index impact on muscle wasting and recovery following critical illness? A pilot feasibility observational study
ConclusionsObese patients lost muscle depth in a comparable manner to non‐obese patients, suggesting that BMI may not prevent muscle depth loss. It was not possible to determine the effect on strength because the clinical condition of patients precluded reliable measurements. (Source: Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics)

Nutritional status of Vietnamese outpatients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
ConclusionsMalnutrition is common in Vietnamese outpatients with COPD. A BMI threshold of <21 kg m–2 appears to represent a useful and pragmatic cut‐off point for identifying outpatients requiring comprehensive nutritional assessment and support. (Source: Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics)

Vitamin D supplementation and its influence on muscle strength and mobility in community ‐dwelling older persons: a systematic review and meta‐analysis
ConclusionsIn conclusion, we observed no improvement in muscle strength after the administration of vitamin D with or without calcium supplements. We did find a small but significant deterioration of mobility. However, this is based on a limited number of studies and participants. (Source: Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics)

The nutrition and food ‐related roles, experiences and support needs of female family carers of malnourished older rehabilitation patients
ConclusionsRehabilitation units and rehabilitation dietitians should recognise and support family carers of malnourished patients, which may ultimately lead to an improved perceived benefit of care and patient outcomes. Intervention research is required to make strong recommendations for practice. (Source: Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics)

Patients with inflammatory bowel disease and their treating clinicians have different views regarding diet
ConclusionsThe present study demonstrates that IBD patients consider diet to be important in their disease. IBD clinicians from different disciplines have diverse views of the role of diet. Advice given to patients is heterogeneous, often perceived as inadequate and poorly followed. (Source: Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics)

Association between gestational weight gain and risk of obesity in preadolescence: a longitudinal study (1997–2007) of 5125 children in Greece
ConclusionsExcessive GWG was associated with a higher risk of greater infant size at birth and a higher BMI status at the ages of 2 and 8 years. Healthcare providers should encourage women to limit their GWG to the range indicated by the current guidelines. (Source: Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics)
