The equine hindlimb proximal suspensory ligament: an assessment of health and function by means of its damping harmonic oscillator properties, measured using an acoustic myography system. A new modality study
This study compared the in vivo acoustic signals generated by healthy and injured hindlimb proximal suspensory ligaments (PSL) in horses and determined if an acoustic myography (AMG) system was an acceptable tool to aid in diagnosis. Complete lameness evaluations were performed on 96 horses either with a history or suspicion of hind limb lameness. AMG signals were acquired with the aid of a CURO from the hindlimbs following a moving evaluation and prior to additional procedures. (Source: Journal of Equine Veterinary Science)

Consumer knowledge and horse preference for different colored oats
Oats (Avena sativa L.) are used for human and livestock consumption. Currently, the market prefers white hulled oats that have a high test weight, which historically were used for equine feed. Plant breeding programs in the Midwest U.S. produce both white and yellow hulled oats that meet industry standards; however, there appears to be a market preference for white hulled oats even though the hull is removed before processing for human consumption. Runs of homozygosity and population history of three horse breeds with small population size
Long consecutive homozygous genotype segments, runs of homozygosity (ROH), are a result of parents transmitting identical haplotypes, which can be used to estimate autozygosity. Based on 612K single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) we computed three ROH parameters (genome length covered by ROH SROH, number of ROH NROH, and autozygosity FROH) to investigate different scenarios in contemporary horse breeding: limited census (Bosnian Mountain Horse), conservation breeding (Posavje Horse), and selection within closed studbook (Haflinger). Seasonal variation in tracheal mucous and bronchoalveolar lavage cytology for adult clinically healthy stabled horses

Abatement of Streptococcus equi in Soiled Equine Bedding and Compost
The survival of Streptococcus equi subspecies equi and zooepidemicus in soiled equine bedding (SEB) and compost was evaluated. Dacron bags containing SEB were inoculated with 1010 c.f.u. of each subspecies, and stored at 21 °C–23°C for 24 hours, then placed in compost windrows containing SEB and feed waste (Experiments 1 and 2). Streptococci were quantified immediately after inoculation in the bags, and during the 336 hours after placement in the windrow. Comparison of NIRS and wet chemistry methods for the nutritional analysis of haylages for horses
Haylage (DM 51-85%) is one of the most common forages fed to equids in Europe. The aim of this study was to assess the repeatability and reliability of the nutrient concentrations in haylage determined by either near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) or traditional Wet chemistry methods (WCh) in a single commercial laboratory. Multiorgan Disease and Death Associated With Streptococcus equi spp. zooepidemicus in a 2-Month-Old Foal
A 2-month-old Andalusian colt in central Spain presented dyspnea, diarrhea, and depression. Despite the initial treatment for presumptive pneumonia caused by Rhodococcus equi, after 1 hour, the colt showed signs of shock and died. The necropsy revealed multiple abscesses in the lung, as well as enlarged mesenteric lymph nodes, and hemorrhagic peritonitis. Samples were taken from trachea, lung parenchyma, small intestine, and colon. All samples yielded a pure culture of Streptococcus equi spp. zooepidemicus, whereas R.  equi was excluded by using a specific qPCR performed on all samples. Objective Detection and Quantification of Irregular Gait With a  Portable Inertial Sensor-Based System in Horses During an Endurance Race—a Preliminary Assessment
Detection of irregular gait (IG) during endurance competitions is based on a brief subjective veterinary examination. Horse elimination due to IG is common and may elicit competitors' complaints. We hypothesized that detection of IG by objectively assessing motion asymmetry can be performed during endurance competitions. The aim of this preliminary study was to start investigating the feasibility of detecting and quantifying IG with a portable inertial sensor-based system (PISBS) during endurance races.
