SSRI‐antipsychotic combination in psychotic depression: sertraline pharmacokinetics in the presence of olanzapine, a brief report from the STOP‐PD study
ConclusionSertraline pharmacokinetics were similar to historical descriptions in populations not taking antipsychotics. Unlike our unexpected finding that sertraline increases olanzapine apparent clearance, olanzapine exposure had no impact on sertraline pharmacokinetics. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Next‐day residual effects of gabapentin, diphenhydramine, and triazolam on simulated driving performance in healthy volunteers: a phase 3, randomized, double‐blind, placebo‐controlled, crossover trial
ConclusionsTogether, these data suggest that low‐dose gabapentin had no appreciable next‐day effects on simulated driving performance or cognitive functioning. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. (Source: Human Psychopharmacology: Clinical and Experimental)

Association study of polymorphism in the serotonin transporter gene promoter, methylation profiles, and expression in patients with major depressive disorder
We examined the association of 5HTT gene methylation, which influences gene expression, and the 5HTTLPR genotype before antidepressant treatment and expression before and after treatment. The aims of this study were (1) to investigate the association between 5HTT methylation or expression in leukocytes and depression and (2) to investigate a possible effect of 5HTT methylation, expression, and genotype on clinical symptoms in MDD. The 5HTTLPR genotype was significantly associated with mean methylation levels in patients only (patients: r = 0.40, p = 0.035, controls: p = 0.96). The mean methylation level was sig...

Genetic association analysis of N‐methyl‐d‐aspartate receptor subunit gene GRIN2B and clinical response to clozapine
ConclusionsOur findings do not support a role for these GRIN2B variants in altering response to clozapine in our sample. Investigation of additional glutamate variants in clozapine response is warranted. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. (Source: Human Psychopharmacology: Clinical and Experimental)

The effects of pioglitazone adjuvant therapy on negative symptoms of patients with chronic schizophrenia: a double‐blind and placebo‐controlled trial
ConclusionThese findings suggest the probable efficacy of pioglitazone as an augmentation therapy in reducing the negative symptoms of schizophrenia. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. (Source: Human Psychopharmacology: Clinical and Experimental)

Individual differences in in vitro and in vivo metabolic clearances of antipsychotic risperidone from Japanese subjects genotyped for cytochrome P450 2D6 and 3A5
ConclusionsIndividual differences in metabolic clearance of risperidone under the present conditions were not significantly influenced by the genotypes of CYP2D6 or CYP3A5. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. (Source: Human Psychopharmacology: Clinical and Experimental)

Individual differences in in vitro and in vivo metabolic clearances of the antipsychotic drug olanzapine from non‐smoking and smoking Japanese subjects genotyped for cytochrome P4502D6 and flavincontaining monooxygenase 3
ConclusionsOlanzapine clearance was not affected by CYP2D6 or FMO3 genotypes or smoking behavior as a single factor under the present conditions because olanzapine clearance is mediated by multiple enzymes involved in two major and one minor pathways. Mixing alcohol with energy drink (AMED) and total alcohol consumption: a systematic review and meta‐analysis
In conclusion, between‐group comparisons suggest that heavy alcohol consumption is one of the several phenotypical differences between AMED and AO consumers. Within‐subject comparisons revealed, however, that AMED consumption does not increase the total amount of alcohol consumed on a single drinking episode. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Does elevated peripheral benzodiazepine receptor gene expression relate to cognitive deficits in methamphetamine dependence?
ConclusionThe results suggest that systemic inflammatory effects can be associated with chronic METH abuse, and this may relate to the cognitive deficits seen in METH dependence. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. (Source: Human Psychopharmacology: Clinical and Experimental)

Amygdala responses to quetiapine XR and citalopram treatment in major depression: the role of 5‐HTTLPR‐S/Lg polymorphisms

A randomized, double‐blind, placebo controlled, parallel group, efficacy study of alpha BRAIN® administered orally
ConclusionsThe use of Alpha BRAIN® for 6 weeks significantly improved recent verbal memory when compared with controls, in a group of healthy adults. While the outcome of the study is encouraging, this is the first randomized controlled trial of Alpha BRAIN®, and the results merit further study. Pharmacology for sleep disturbance in PTSD
Symptoms of sleep disturbance, particularly nightmares and insomnia, are a central feature of post‐traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Emerging evidence suggests that specific treatment of PTSD‐related sleep disturbance improves other symptoms of the disorder, which in turn suggests that such disturbance may be fundamental to development and maintenance of the disorder. This mini‐review focuses on pharmacological treatment of sleep disturbance in adult PTSD (specifically, studies testing the efficacy of antidepressants, adrenergic inhibiting agents, antipsychotics and benzodiazepine and non‐benzodiazepine hypnotics)....
